I used a K5 to convert my da300.
It took maybe 1/2 an hour.

As Uncle Vanya said, card reader and text editor.
If memory serves me right I used MS Word as the text editor.

How close to Saskatoon SK are you?

Not certain if you navigated to the bottom left where it says page setup and changed the paper size there before going to the print commands at the bottom right.
It drove me crazy last night trying to do the same thing until is used "page setup" on bottom left.

Seemed to work fine from there.

Good luck

Extreme Cold

I haven't noticed any difference in cold weather between WR lenses and others in cold weather. If there is any oil/grease on the aperture blades, the cold will affect them.

The snow in Winnipeg is much like the snow in Saskatoon, normally cold and dry. If your camera isn't warm from just being inside your house or vehicle, the snow won't likely melt on the camera or lens.
Simply brush or shake gently to get rid of the snow before going into the warmth. Keeping your camera in your camera bag until ready to shoot will help to minimize snow on the camera.

That being said, I would expose my camera to the least amount of snow as possible (same goes for rain, dust, sand etc.).
I've been more concerned with my camera and sand on the beach in the summer, than I've ever been with snow in the winter.

Extreme Cold

As everyone else has said, the battery is the first to feel the effects of extreme cold.

I've had my K-1 as well as my K-5 out at -20c for a few hours at time with no ill effects. The only problem I have had is with one lens where there must be a bit of oil residue on the aperture blades and the aperture is sticky at about +5c.

As the air is dry on the prairies, even condensation hasn't been an issue.

Here is a picture taken in Saskatoon yesterday. Temperature started the day -36.5c with a wind chill around -45c

This was taken in the afternoon at about -30c with a freshening breeze.

Dress warm (layers and layers) and have a go at taking pictures.

Upgrading to K1 or sticking with APS-C

I also upgraded from a K5 to the K1. On the K1 I used the 18-135 in 1:1 mode (until I traded it off on the 28-105). the 40mm Ltd and 70mm Ltd also work well in full frame. Your 16-85 will likely work at some focal lengths in full frame and should work at all lengths in 1:1.
The K1 is a much nicer camera than the K5.
That being said, I kept my K5 and also use it on more occasions than I thought I would.

As to weight, I walked around Disney for 6 days in the fall with the K1 in a sling bag along with extra lenses and didn't notice a weight difference from previous trips with the K5.

As Norm indicated, the camera is only the first expense. The FA31 is considerably heavier (and costlier) than the 21mm Ltd for a somewhat similar field of view.

I don't regret the purchase and feel it was a good decision.

On our last trip to Disneyworld my 18-135 was on the camera for the majority of the time. Aside from the DA 50 1.8 for low light shots and the 40m Ltd (just 'cause it's so small and takes up virtually no room) the 18-135 did everything I needed.
Keep to the 18-135 and enjoy the trip.

In the grand theme of things the Disney prices aren't so bad.
Although we don't go as often as my son wishes, we watch for the Disney specials during the slow weeks.
We went in January this year, and received the dining plan free with a minimum 5 day room and tickets.
Even with the ridiculous cost of airfares and airport fees to get out of the frozen north, it worked out to about $250/day per person for the week based on 3 people.
This included airfare, rooms, most meals, and the park tickets

When you compare this to the cost of summer camping road trip, fishing or hunting trips, ski trips etc it seems to be about the same $/day.

A friend of mine has a kid playing hockey and he could go to Disney twice for what the tournament weekends cost him in a season.

sling type camera bag for K-r

I use the lowepro sling 102.
It's small enough to fit under our commuter airline seats.
It's also great for lens changes. I usually shoot primes and you can bring the bag around in front of you and use like a shelf with edges and easily change lenses.
Once you get used to carrying it, it's fast and convenient to get the camera out for your shot.
I will also carry the camera without the "never ready" lens cap on because it's still protected in the bag.

FA 50 1.4 focus ring

I was looking at a FA 50 1.4 in a local pawn shop and could feel a "click" when turning the focus ring.
It seems to happen about 4 times when turning the focus ring from stop to stop.
I had also looked at a used FA 50 1.4 at a local camera shop and noticed the same "click" when turning the focus ring.
In both cases the lens was not mounted on a camera.
Is this normal for this lens?

DSLR Beginner - Pentax or Canikon?
Posted By jimt

With me, it came down to which one felt better in my hand. The local camera store had Sony, Canon, Nikon and Pentax all in stock. The staff all had their views on either Canon or Nikon being superior due to lens selection, but strongly suggested I purchase the one that "felt" and fit my hand best. If you don't like the feel of your camera, you won't take it with you and it will be less than useful.

A friend bought a Nikon at the same time, and now wishes he would have bought a Pentax, as we cruise through the second hand stores and pawn shops and I can pick up "M" lenses for $20 - $50. He covets the Ltd lenses and weather sealing as well.

In short, the Pentax fit my hand the best (originally a KX now a K5) and the Ltd lenses are jewels and so satisfying to use.

You also seem to join a society as other Pentax users will come up and talk to you in the sea on Canon/Nikon users.

Good luck on your choice.

You have exactly 1000 dollars,a k-30, and a 18-55 WR. What lenses...

I would echo the thoughts of buying the 15ltd.
Up here in the great white frozen north, I've been able to find the m50 1.7 for $20, a m200 f4 for $50; as well as a number of other M & K lenses for less than a $100.
Look around for some good used K & M mounts to go with the ltd 15, buy a used 55-300 for the reach and spend a couple of hundred on a good tripod (lightweight) as well as a good ballhead.
You should still have enough for a polarizer and ND filter
Be careful of the Ltd lenses, they are the crack cocaine of the Pentax world, and you can't stop at 1.
Have fun

Walking around Disney...

I would suggest the 18-55.
The last trip we made to Disney, I had the 21LTD on the camera (K-5) for most of the trip (except Animal Kingdom Safari ride 55-300)
With the wider angle you can get shots with less people between you and what you are shooting i.e. pictures of family in front of .....

The first trip I made to Disney with a DSLR was with the Kx and the 18-55 kit lens.
Some of those pictures are still my favourites.

Which lens next? Pentax 15mm f/4 or Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5?

I have both the Sigma 10-20 3.5 and the 15ltd
I find that walking around the city, hiking, fishing etc. the 15ltd is a nicer package and weight.
I purchased the 15ltd after having the Sigma, and haven't used the Sigma much since.
For walking around the city, I usually have one of the Ltd primes on the camera and at least one more tucked into a pocket.
