The price for a K20D body is $849.99 at adorama today. Quite a bump, I wonder what's going on? The price is $714.80, direct from amazon.

I do this as well, I like my K100D much better this way. Confuses the hell out of people when they try to use my camera.

Sigma 17-35mm vs. 21/3.2

I got my Sigma 17-35mm back from the local Sigma service center. It is better than it was before the service, but it still isn't that good. I'm not impressed with this lens at all.

Opinion/experience with cheap flash

I have a Sunpak 383 Super that I use with my K100D Super (getting tired of that "Super" tag). It works great! I never use the auto mode though - manual all the way. It's made for DSLRs (meaning it has a low trigger voltage), so it won't blow out your electronics.

It's cheap, it does the job, and swivels in 2 directions! I'm happy with it.

Sigma 17-35mm vs. 21/3.2

Thanks for looking at the big versions Duh_Vinci. The outside pic was a real quickie, and I didn't use the best settings there. But after playing with the lens on a tripod I started to realize I couldn't get an even focus. Like one side of the pic would be fine and the opposite side would be crap.

BTW, nice to see another Virginian. I spent most of my life in Hampton VA.

I just got this lens, except off of ebay, and not as cheap as that amazon price :(

For the good news, it actually does have an aperture ring. So it'll work on anything K-mount. Otherwise, I'm not sure about this lens. I suspect I have a dud, but it might be me. It doesn't seem too sharp to me, and the colors are blah. I have a Sigma service center near me, so I will get it checked out eventually.

Here are 2 sample pics I took, click for bigger versions and EXIF info:

RAW in Linux - PEF vs. DNG?

I tried Bibble and Gimp with plugins but I stuck with RawTherapee. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet. It is basically developed by one guy and has a really simple install (uncompress a tarball into a directory). I am very satisfied with it. Oh, and it understands PEF and DNG (among many others). If you go to the site check out the forum, that's where the good info is. RawTherapee is free, but I was so happy with it I gave the developer some PayPal love...

Raw Therapee

Oh yea, to answer your question I would go with PEF, because it uses lossless compression. DNG is uncompressed, so it uses more of your memory card. IQ-wise there is no difference between the two.

Keep the K10D/K20D or go to D300 - A hands on test.

Something interesting for those that really want quicker AF on Pentax - I've read that AF is slower on Pentax is because it does a double check, as opposed to a single check on a Nikon (or Canon). Apparently the K20D will have an option to turn off this double check so you can have "Nikon style" focusing (single check). Who knows how will work out in the real world, but something to think about...

a cheap fill flash

Either the Vivitar 285HV or a Sunpak 383 Super will run you about US$90.00, new. If you get a used flash you have to make sure the trigger voltage is about 6 volts or you will fry your digital camera. But if you only use it off camera I suppose you'll be ok... maybe...

I bought a Sunpak 383 Super just 2 weeks ago, and I'm really happy with it.

You're wrong. The EXIF data backs up what lol101 said. Unless he swiched around the pics after you made your post.
