Photography Drones

Fortunately, I decided to learn with a tiny drone. If it had been a photography drone, it could have been a very expensive crash and I would have ended up with far more than just a cut on my face.

Update: I have not put much more thought into a photo drone since starting this thread. As luck would have it, I received a small drone last night in a holiday party gift exchange. The person I attended with happens to be a drone pilot and recommended I practice with the smaller drone to get a feel for the controls.

I have learned that the controls can be somewhat difficult as I have already flown the small drone into my face.

Thinking ahead to the holidays, I think I am finally interested in getting a drone for photography. I have no preferences as to size or flight time. What I am looking for is something under around $400-500. I am willing to pay more but I would first look at drones in that price range. Photography is what I primarily intend to use it for. If I do use it for videography, it will only be on occasion. Recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Do you always carry a camera? What? Cell phones don't count

To some extent, yes. When I'm out, I don't always want to carry a DSLR so I have a Leica that easily fits in my bag or pocket. About half of the time, the camera ends up staying in my bag for at least a week.

With a background in agriculture, this was also my first thought. I was about to bust out my sorghum knowledge to help OP overcome the fear.

Introductory Camera Suggestions

Thank you for all of the suggestions so far! As September approaches, I will begin looking into what I can find within my budget. I've been putting a lot of thought into a bridge camera since this would be her first camera beyond her phone and a point-and-shoot. She's mostly been sharing her photos on Instagram and putting them into photo books for family and friends. She really likes just going out and looking for photo opportunities. Now that she's retired, photography has given her something to do.

For the budget, I would say under $500. No preference if it is new or used.

Introductory Camera Suggestions

Over the past year, my mom has gotten into taking pictures. She currently uses her smartphone and mostly photographs nature and pets. Her birthday will be coming up in September and she has expressed interest in having a camera. She says she thinks she might enjoy having a camera "like mine" (a DSLR) although they are expensive. Seeing as she enjoys taking photos, I am seeking suggestions for an affordable, introductory camera. I am not necessarily looking for a DSLR considering the cost of lenses.

I have a family member who has a Lumix. It's nice and all but I don't think I could take it diving.

I'm really leaning towards the GoPro because I'm looking to get my diving certification. In terms on phones, I'd like to stick with my current phone. I don't think the occaisonal video or photo is worth getting a new phone over.

I'm interested in purchasing a smaller camera for when I don't want to pack up my DSLR but would still like to take photos or video. I'd also be interested in making videos reviewing local restaurants. With the GoPro, I could film, bring it on my adventures like ziplining, it's also cheaper, and there are a variety of acessories available. With the GR, I could take photos that may be a higher quality but the camera is more expensive and there aren't acessories available.I'd like to hear from people who own these particular camera.

Would you happen to have any photos? I would have loved to be there November 9, 1989 to take photos but I wasn't born at the time.

Imagine you have a time machine can can only be used once to travel back in time and back to to the present. If you could go any place and time but only stay a few days, where and when would you go? Now let's imagine you can only use a camera from that time. What camera would you choose?

My choice would be the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. My camera of choice would be any Pentax available.

Photobook design and sales for customers

Most of my photography work is in events that have ranged from one day to two weeks. One my projects is two sessions of youth summer day camp with the local sheriff's office. Last year was my first year taking photos for it and I hadn't figured it all out. On the graduation day, the campers meet the sheriff and have their photo taken with him. I tried bringing my printer on the last day to print the photos fro them to take home. I highly doubt I'll do that again. The printer wasn't as fast as I had expected and I had to print sixty photos.

This year I've thought about taking the photos, ordering them on Shutterfly (I could get them for free with my Coke Rewards points instead of buying ink), and mailing them instead. I will make another slideshow that will be projected from my laptop to a wall mounted television. I also had a portfolio book printed from Shutterfly. I designed it myself since I used to be an art student.

I'm interested in designing a small book for each session which will be available to purchase a day or so after the camp so that I have time to design it. On graduation day, I could have some books with photos from previous camps so parents would have an idea what would be in said book. Is there a website that I could design a book and sell it online without it coming to me to send out? I'd consider ordering some and sending them out as people request them but if parents say they'd be interested and change their minds, I don't want to have any laying around. The ideal system would be one in which I give the parents a link, they go to a site where they can buy a book that's been slightly marked up so I can make a small profit, and the site transfers my profit to PayPal or whatever. I've been at events where the photographer has a link to purchase prints but I don't know if there are any with books available. When I volunteer for an organization I've been with long before I was taking photos, I would donate all the profits. I have no doubt that someone would by a book since their major event brings in about 4,000 people from across the state.

How does this plan sound? Any websites yall recommend?

I should have gotten an ID bracelet sooner. Anyone know where I can find a good one?

A while back, I went to take some photos in the snow. I didn't bring any ID or anything since it was I was only going to a park behind my house. In retrospect it would have been a good idea. Luckily, nothing bad happened. Seeing as I'm from the South, I'm not good at walking in the snow. I was also walking where I short drop from a freezing cold creek.
Also, I recently begin training for my first 5k since an injury that's kept me from running since August 2013. It was dark, on a trail in another part of the state. I had been one of the first people out but about .25 mi in, I fell in a ditch on the side of the trail. I didn't really do anything about it at the time. I could have stopped at the rest stop and waited for the ambulance. I tried running a little more but it hurt pretty bad. I stuck around after I finished so I was there for about two hours after I was injured. The drive back to Raleigh was about a two hour trip. When I got home I iced my ankle injury.
My next run is a mud run. If something happens there, or when I'm shooting, or what have you, I don't want to be an anonymous Jane Doe. I finally decided that the best way for immediate ID is a medical bracelet. Does anyone know where I can find one with the basics on the front and medical details on the back? Preferably a cuff type as opposed to a chain bracelet.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Software vs. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Software Update

I recently decided to switch from Adobe PSE to Adobe Lr. I found two options on B&H, one is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Software Upgrade for Mac 65215274 and the other is Lightroom 4. I'd rather go with the first option but it says "software update". Is the former an add on to another Lightroom software or can it function on its own?

Approximate cost for LCD replacement?

I ultimately didn't have it replaced. When I took it to my local shop for someone to actually look at it as opposed to describing it over the phone. The moisture in the LCD cleared up after a while. The problem was a small amount of rust.
