Probably as a budget model (as opposed to the SPF). It didn't have a self-timer (but a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec., just like the SP500). It was produced (assembled) in Hong Kong but not marketed in Japan.

From 1958 onwards, Leica M2 cameras and e.g. a number of lenses for the Leicaflex cameras were also produced at the Canadian factory in Midland, Ontario, in parallel with production at the main factory in Wetzlar.

Why photograph analogue?
I don't think it's necessary to say a word about the charisma that is still unique today, the impression of the photos, the durability of the analogue slides/photos, as well as the simple analogue workflow.
The long service life of high-quality cameras and lenses from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, which were manufactured due to extremely high optical and mechanical manufacturing quality that is still unsurpassed to this day, is a reason to work with these technical highlights. In addition, it's simply a great pleasure to photograph with handcrafted and technical masterpieces in hand. With cameras that can easily last half a century or even a whole century (how long will you be able to use your digital camera before it's outdated technology?) and with top-quality images, we (and the next generations) will still be able to enjoy a century from now (what's the lifespan of a hard disk?). Quite apart from the fact that with analogue photography you usually know what is important when taking photos and how little you need for a good picture.
Analogue photography continues to be a unique and fantastic medium. The photography experience. You take your time. Analogue photography needs more time. But everyone who can already take pictures properly takes their camera out of their bag and takes a picture just as quickly as with a digital camera. The composition of the picture, the exposure, the perspective, etc. Everything is considered before the shutter is released. And then it just takes until the film is full and the images come from developing. Beginners in photography, however, learn how to take pictures faster with the "analogue". The quantity of the images decreases, and the quality of the images will probably increase. One thinks about the aperture, foreground, depth of field, etc. before the shutter release. This gives you much nicer pictures and much less waste that you would have to manually delete or edit on the monitor. You take a lot more time for the composition of the picture. Because the picture that you have after the release is an unchangeable one-of-a-kind. And then there is the durability. Your analogue film/pictures will be available even after 50 years or more. How long will your hard disk last?

Perhaps the ease with which analogue cameras are operated (and conversely the increasingly (redundant) functions of digital cameras) will attract people to film cameras. Instamatic cameras were as (or more) popular as today's smartphones (which are also becoming more and more complicated to operate).

Hopefully not. And by the way It wasn't Nikon, Canon or Sony - or Pentax. It was in fact Contax! Introduced in 2000 and launched in 2002, the Contax N Digital was the world's first 35mm full-frame DSLR. The Contax N Digital had a 6mp full-frame sensor. Unfortunately, Contax/Kyocera stopped producing cameras in 2005.

Analogue film cameras and analogue photography have recently received quite a bit of publicity and interest (and prices for used analogue equipment are increasing), not from amateurs or professionals, but from an in-between group of photographers, advanced amateurs and enthusiasts (and also from young people who have never experienced analogue photography in practice). Perhaps also from an experimental group of artists who see in analogue photography an opportunity to revive the photographic expression of the past: today's past in black and white – what is present today is tomorrow's past. Pentax's plans to revive the photographic techniques of the past with the release of one or more analogue cameras will probably appeal to the said segment of advanced amateurs/enthusiasts/'artists'/newcomers and, if realized, may prove to be an inspiration to many digital photographers who have not experienced analogue photography. Probably in a combination of old and new technology: analogue film scanned and post-processed on the computer. Interest in analogue photography will probably be strengthened if camera manufacturers launch new analogue cameras - and unfortunately probably also be weakened if nothing happens soon! So what is happening? Will we soon see the first new analogue cameras? If not, then the analogue days might soon be history!

Thanks for the introduction to the Pentax ES II. And with a nice and very clean copy of the Pentax ES II. Yes, the 70s was a "Golden Age" for SLR cameras, starting with purely mechanical cameras and ending with extensive electronics in almost every new camera. In 1980 Nikon launched the F3 - an electronic camera that had an unusually long production run (until 2003!) and still lives - but Pentax was among the first manufacturers (and it was Pentax - not Hoya or Ricoh!). Pentax was not alone. Among several others, the Olympus OM-2 was introduced shortly after as the first Olympus camera with an electronic shutter and aperture priority.

31 on an APS-C camera (K-3) = equivalent to 45mm full-frame or normal focal length
43 on an APS-C camera (K-3) = equivalent to 65mm full-frame or short telephoto lens
77 on an APS-C camera (K-3) = equivalent to 115mm full-frame or short telephoto lens.
The three different focal lengths must be assessed individually due to the different focal lengths.
My favourite is the 77. I have two copies of the three lenses (both are the SMC versions MIJ and AIV).
I bought the 77 (like the other two) in the late 1990s/early 2000s when they were introduced. The 77 is (IMO) the optically most successful Pentax lens of the three. Perhaps the first 77mm lens I bought (MIJ silver version with a low serial number 0002xxx) is of better optical quality than the AIV version. Not entirely sure, but it is a lens that can be compared to the best from the other Japanese (and German?) lens manufacturers. For example Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75mm 1:1.8 (one of the finest Olympus M43 lenses). It's equally good on the K-1. It can be recommended!

Another very successful year for the ZEISS Group

"Oberkochen, Germany | 14 December 2022 | ZEISS Group"

""The past year was certainly very difficult and challenging in many places due to the geopolitical conditions. Nevertheless, we can look back on another successful fiscal year with a high degree of economic satisfaction," said Dr. Karl Lamprecht, President and CEO of ZEISS. "For the first time in our history, our annual revenue has exceeded the threshold of 8 billion euros. All four ZEISS segments and more than 38,000 employees have contributed to this. We are growing and at the same time investing in the future worldwide. The success shows that we are on the right track with our strategy focused on megatrends.""

"Revenue in the Consumer Markets segment also increased year-on-year in fiscal year 2021/22. The Vision Care strategic business unit generated growth in all regions - particularly with ZEISS brand lenses, innovations and digital products. With innovations and greater market penetration, revenue for nature observation and hunting optics is also developing positively. With the resumption of the cine lens business in the reporting period, business with film lenses also grew compared to the previous year."

Why i use my camera less and less

The development of and in the cities these years is going very fast. As a trained historian, it's of great interest to observe this development, not only in words but especially with pictures. Not only images of "great" or "famous" personalities but of everyday life, the physical development of the cities/urban landscapes, of technology, of people in their diversity, tied to their time. If people had stopped taking pictures 100 years ago, imagine what cultural treasure would have been lost to posterity. And think how interesting it would have been to study history before the invention of photography with photographs! The French Revolution in colour! The Reformation in colour! Witch burnings in colour! Daily life during the Viking Age in colour! The Roman Empire in colour! The building of the Egyptian pyramids in colour! There is a risk that posterity will lack pictures of our time. Many (perhaps most) photographs disappear with the development of digital technology. Pictures on hard drives and smartphones do not reach further out than the hard drive or smartphone. So our time may paradoxically become a time without images - unless the photographs are saved on print.

I own a few older Leicas and a small range of Leica optics. Nothing to talk about. No better or worse than other cameras or lenses from other manufacturers. In my view, Leica has always been lagging behind other manufacturers regarding specs. No weather sealing, shake reduction, or autofocus, and only a limited range of lenses. (Manual rangefinders are a (historic but also cherished) thing of the past). The only place where Leica is not lagging behind is the phantasy price. At the same time though, I think this is the way forward that Leica owners prefer. The same (or almost the same) product with only a few new things disturbing the feeling of how things should continue to be as they have always been. Wonderful tools, but so are the cameras and lenses from many other manufacturers. So there is plenty of room for a manufacturer like Pentax/Ricoh to expand with a price setting for ordinary people and not only for rich people who (with their photo jewellery) like to show how wealthy they are.

Yes, and with the new monochrome camera, the range of Pentax cameras becomes even more attractive than it was before. With medium format (645z), full format (K-1) and APS-C format (K-3), Pentax is well covered for every photographer, whether amateur, enthusiast or professional. The Pentax K-3 Monochrome will probably make some Leica users switch from an overrated and overpriced monochrome Leica camera to the new Pentax K-3 Monochrome. Should a Pentax K-1 Monochrome be launched, it would probably be difficult for many Leica users to continue using Leica monochrome cameras. A Pentax K-1 Monochrome would completely blow Leica off the field!

Thank you for sharing your experiences with the Pentax MZ cameras and the issues with the mirror mechanism of this series of cameras. I have a Pentax MZ-S with serial number 4840xxx, bought in 2004, used extensively, and still working. I also have a Pentax Z-1p with serial number 7033xxx, bought in 2000, used extensively, and still working. Have you experienced similar issues with the Z-1p's mirror mechanism?
