Pentax ist d - delays in snapping picture

I have a Pentax ist d camera, and it's worked great until fairly recently. Right before the issues started, I got a low battery notification. I'm using lithium non-rechargeable batteries that were received with the camera from a seller on ebay. I tried replacing those with regular AAs (new from the package) and upon trying to turn on the camera again, I got a low battery notification and the camera shut off quickly afterwards. When I put the lithium ones back into the camera, it showed a full battery and does not turn off. However, now the shutter will delay itself and often will not take the picture unless I slowly move forward or backwards - I have no idea why this would work; maybe it has something to do with an autofocus somewhere? I'm really at a loss for why physically moving the camera forward would activate the shutter.

Is this a problem with the camera itself or do I just need to get the right type of battery? From what I've read online, regular alkaline AAs should work (but don't).

Hey there! I'm not very good at these sorts of things, so we'll keep this short! I'm currently in Louisville, Kentucky and I write for Louisville.com. I recently bought a Pentax ist DS used on ebay, and it's my first DSLR, though I am used to a manual Canon SLR. I'm hoping to be able to get the most out of this camera and hopefully you fine people can help me along that path!

Good setting for concert/night scenes WITHOUT flash

I recently acquired a Pentax ist DS and have had a little time to play around with it. I am used to a manual Canon film camera but I write for an online weekly site, so I wanted to be able to take digital pictures when I went on events. Of course, most of these events are at night or are concerts, some with low lighting. My issue is that I really don't like to use the flash if I don't have to - I'm sure it's annoying for the performer and usually just doesn't produce a good image to me. Looking through the manual last night, I discovered the "P" setting which will give an auto-exposure, which works, but of course with it being so dark, it's a really long exposure and at these events I won't have a tripod. And the manual settings I've tried give it under exposure. I have, in the past, seen some photographers at such events taking pictures without the flash and without the long exposure, but I don't know what setting they had or what type of camera. Any ideas? Would changing the ISO in the manual mode help?

Also, I am used to a light meter to determine the appropriate shutter speed and f/stop - is there a way to do this with the DSLR I have, or do I now have to memorize that kind of stuff?
