Thanks for making the manual available. I wanted an English version for my K-1 and was surprised I could not find it on a Pentax site.

Suggestion: Great Big Pentax Lens Survey

I found myself continuously being forced into ticking boxes that were not an accurate representation of my position/opinion. I suggest you pull this survey and reformulate it.

This type of survey is too black & white, perhaps it is impossible to get it right, I'm not sure, but a survey that forces people to give incorrect information is not going to be of much value.

When I submitted the form there was no confirmation and the form remained on the screen so I could have filled it in again.

Representation of reds in photos

When I (and other examples I have seen) have experienced red problems it is almost always clipping of the red channel. Some people like this effect.
Have a look at the red channel histogram in the photos involved. Underexposing a bit usually helps (but not always e.g. red poppy with sun shining through petals)

What would be an upgrade for a *istD?

Hi David - I went from a *istD to a K20D, but in between I purchased a full-frame camera from another manufacturer. I made two errors of judgement here - a. Thinking I needed full-frame and b. Selling my *istD. So I later bought a K100D Super to backup my K20D and use occasionally when I wanted the lighter weight and smaller size, in risky situalions and sometimes where I preferred the image from that sensor. It also works with the latest lenses.

So if you don't need a larger image size I suggest you don't buy anything. If you do or feel ready for a new camera get a K10d or K20D. I noticed that one place was still selling new K10d's a few months ago - not sure if they are still available.

moiré

I have a Kodak SLR/c Professional (15 MP full frame with a Canon mount). It has no anti-aliasing filter and moiré can be a serious problem. With very few exceptions the full version of the RAW developer Sikypix 3 removes it all in seconds.

I know that a version of Silkypix is supplied with Pentax cameras nowadays and you have presumably tried this, but I wonder if the full version is better in this respect - hopefully someone else can inform you. I have never tried the Pentax version.

Do I want FF or not?

For some of the reasons you suggest I use Pentax for telephoto photography and a full frame digital camera or medium format for wide angle. It works OK, but as long as I stick with Pentax it does mean two systems. By the way the noise on my FF camera is worse that on my Pentax.

Any new rumours about a Pentax FF DSLR yet?

Boris - as I understand it the operation on K-mount is only reversible for Canon APS cameras such as the 40D and 50D, so the only benefit over the K10D and the K20D would be 6 frames/sec. In the full frame cameras the mirror is said to get in the way. You can still use K-mount on the full frames, but that is a permanent conversion.

There are a few exceptions like the 500/4 (and I think 400/4). I use several M42s on Canon full frame with an adapter and also the 500/4 K-mount with a different adapter. All work perfectly. The adapter shown in the first image on your link appears to be the one I use with the 500/4.

K20D underexpose seripusly

This is not an issue that would ever concern me because I never use auto exposure on a camera. I use a trial shot followed by a histogram check and after that I work by 'feel' with the occasional histogram check.

However to be fair to this poster this month's UK Professional Photographer magazine slates the K20D for (inconsistently) underexposing in bright situations. They said sky almost always needed +1 stop compensation. Other than that they were positive about every aspect of the camera.

Curiously the photo in the review that is supposed to be an example of this 'problem' shows a perfect (in my opinion) exposure of a very difficult subject. A white waterfall partly in the sun and partly in shade. There is full detail visible in both sun and shady areas - a remarkable performance in my opinion.

Coincidentally I downloaded the trial version of PhotoAcute studio last week. Firstly as far as I can see the trial version is fully featured, certainly good enough to assess the software. They just print the name and details over the output to spoil it, but this does not impede your ability to assess the results in any way.

So far I have only checked the Image resolution option. I used a K100D with a 35mm f2 (manual focus) and carefully followed the instructions for the RAW option. I can confirm that all 4 tests produced an acceptable image at twice the size of the original, but when these original images were upsized to the same size in Photoshop (bicubic resampling) the difference was marginal. However the Photoacute images were very slightly better. This software package provides several other options and is good value if you need any of them. I will try it with other camera/lens combinations and report any useful results.

The biggest problem for Pentax users is the limited lens support. So many lenses will work on these cameras (my favorite is a screw mount lens made around 1966) that there is no way they could test them all. If they could devise a way we could make our own profiles I would buy the software . The following are the lenses currently supported for the K100D and the K10D.

Pentax K100D
Pentax 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (RAW / JPG)
Pentax 35mm f/2 (RAW / JPG)
Pentax 50-200mm f/4-5.6 (RAW / JPG)
Pentax 50mm f/1.7 SMC (RAW)
Tokina 20-35mm f/2.8 (RAW)
Tokina 28-80mm f/2.8 (RAW)

Pentax K10D
Pentax 16-45mm f/4 (RAW / JPG)
Pentax 16-50mm f/2.8 (RAW / JPG)
Pentax 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (JPG)
Pentax 35mm f/2 (RAW / JPG)
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 Macro (RAW / JPG)
Sigma 24mm f/2.8 (RAW / JPG)
Tamron 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 (RAW / JPG)
