Asking Price
$700.00 USD

Item Location
New York (United States)

Item Description
Camera and lenses are in excellent condition. No dust/scratches. Only 10,388 shutter accusations on the k-3. Comes with the battery grip, 2 batteries, and charger. Only cosmetic flaw on the camera is the rubber around the viewfinde, which is torn. Never had any issues. Glass is perfect. $800 is a really fair offer for everything, and I would really like to sell it all together. However I might consider parting things out if the offer is good enough. Thanks.

Abstract A trip to the dunes

Got to take a roadtrip from NY to Colorado this summer. One of the stops was at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Wanted to share the photos with you guys! Most of these shots were taken with a Pentax K-3, but I was also using a K-R for some shots. Lenses used were the Sigma 18-35 1.8, Pentax FA 100-300, and last but not least a Vivitar series 1 90mm 2.5. The low weight of the k-r and 100-300 made it a great 2nd camera to have on me for the shots that needed range.

We turned onto 150 as the sun was setting. Settling in for the last 20 mile stretch, dusk was rapidly approaching. I was battling the urge to pull over around every new corner and capture the last hint of light in the otherwise shrouded landscape. But with the concern of not knowing if we would be able to get a campsite for the night, I ignored the itch and pressed on. The sun left us as we were still winding down the eerily quiet road, leaving us to imagine what the dunes looked like until morning.

There were no sites available in the park, but there's a privately owned campground conveniently located a few miles down the road and we setup camp there for the night. Coming in on a Monday, we found that we had the campground almost entirely to ourselves. By the time we woke up the next morning, we had already decided we wanted to stay longer. The weather in Colorado that might annoy most people, is great for a photographer. Like clockwork almost every day there were afternoon thunderstorms, painting epic scenes in every direction.

A very short walk from our campsite.

Driving into the park, I stopped to take a classic shot of the climbers looking like ants following the ridges up to the peaks.

Colorado did not seem to be sharing in the plight of some of its western neighbors. Medano Creek, the seasonal stream that sometimes flows at the base of the dunes was going strong.

Closer picture of the Medano Creek with the always modest Rockies in the background.

I could hear the car grumble as I made it turn onto yet another dirt road that looked less than appropriate for a 4cyl Civic, but that was sort of the theme of the trip in essence. After suspensefullly avoiding more than a few potholes and trying to pretend I didn't hear the noises my car just made, we reached the outer parking lot. After that it was a short hike into the Dunes.

One of the greatest things to me about the dunes is simply the scale of the place. It seems so impossible, dunes in Colorado? I still have a hard time believing it's a real place. Once the initial rush of excitement tapered off the first thing we noticed was the noise, or I should say lack there of. It was measured as the quietest National Park in the U.S. so you can contemplate the fact that you're sitting in a dunefield in Colorado at the base of the Rocky Mountains with nothing but the wind to interrupt your thought. Unless there's a sandstorm of course. That would probably take some of the serenity out of it, though we never saw one during our visit.

That pretty much concludes it, thanks for reading guys. If you're ever in Colorado I would definitely recommend this less popular National Park as a must see.

Thanks for the comments guys! I figured the WB would be a little wonky, but there's unfortunately not much I can do about it since I'm working on a pretty old monitor. I've tried some free color correct software in the past but it can only do so much.

What's the lowest shutterspeed I can go with a flash while still being safe? The lowest I was at all night was like 1/80 F2.8, but most of the shots were somewhere at 1/100+ F4.

Sorry to hear you're having the same problem, but you're in luck!

I bought an AA batery adapter on ebay for $3, and went out and got some rechargeable energizer batteries (regular AA's wouldn't work) and the problem was fixed completely. I haven't had any problem since when using the rehargable batteries, and I actually get a longer charge out of them then I do the regular battery.

The black and white doesn't do much for me, the photo itself is not very dramatic. Computationally I would have liked to see the whole log in the frame. The exposure is decent and the clouds are interesting, I just feel like the driftwood on a beach has been done a lot

Ah okay, just wanted to make sure! Hey, if no PP is your thing then that's awesome! You still manage to capture great pictures and that's pretty respectable. I like the way the grass/leaves kind of open you up to the scene. The exposure might be a little bit too bright, especially on the bank there on the left side of the photo. I really like the green in the water though.

NIIIIICE.

An interesting expression. I don't like how the necklace is cut off though, would have been a stronger shot in my opinion if you included all of it. Also, black and white looks like it might be the better choice here

Nice photo, especially taken straight out of the camera. I'm curious, do you shoot in jpg or .raw? If you shoot in .raw and you don't involve any post processing you won't be getting the full potential out of your photos.

Tripod for K-5 under 200$

I was in your position a couple months ago, and decided on a Manfrotto 190xprob with 496rc2 ballhead. It's the first tripod I've ever used so I don't have anything to compare it with, but I love it. By the first day I was already trekking through waterfalls, and it has proved to be very reliable so far. With a little digging you might be able to find the combo for under $200. If you have amazon prime you'll also save a lot of money on shipping.

Manfrotto 190xprob legs - Amazon.com: Manfrotto 190XPROB 3 Section Aluminum Pro Tripod; manu. price = $169.88: Camera & Photo

Manfrotto ballhead - Amazon.com: Manfrotto 496RC2 Ball Head with Quick Release Replaces Manfrotto 486RC2; manu. price = $89.88: Camera & Photo

I don't think it's the overexposure as much as it is the overdone clarity/sharpness and saturated colors. Try toning that down maybe?

Landscape Sunset

Sunsets are tricky. The hardest thing to accept from my experience is that sometimes it's just not worth it. I've witnessed beautiful sunsets that I just could not capture in the same way on camera.

Your composition is good. I like the rocks in the foreground, it gives the picture a little depth instead of just being water/sky. The exposure is dark, but that's going to happen shooting sunsets. Sure, you could have used HDR and bracketed the photo to light up the foreground, but it wouldn't have made much of a difference. My only advice would be to go out every night and keep trying. Once you get that first good sunset, you'll learn what to look for. Just takes experience and time to be there for the right moment, but you're on the right track!

Like slowpez said, I would definitely straighten the horizon line. Besides that, I really want to see what this would look like in B+W.

I love the k-r with the 35mm 2.4. First two pieces of photography equipment I've ever bought.

Black & White Ice

When I think glacial ice, I want to see nice cool colors and glass-like water. While B+W is an interesting approach that brings out some texture, I would scrap it. For this kind of shot, personally I think the colors are the most important part.

Maybe if the ice was more jagged and defined B+W would lend itself to the dramatic aspect of it, but if I'm being honest it looks like it could just be any chunk of ice/snow floating down a river. Sorry if I'm being too harsh I just know I would appreciate the criticism if it were my own photo.

I get what you're saying. Just getting flight instructors next to their Cessna's would be a little boring lol. Luckily for me there's an old aerodrome nearby and they're constantly putting on shows flying WWI era planes, so that's a fantastic idea.

I was thinking of maybe trying something surreal or abstract, but I really can't think of anything unique that would be able to tell a story. I mean I guess I could just go out in a field and wrap a white pillowcase over my face. . Honestly though, I've been wanting to try something like that but it just might not be for me. I feel like I would be trying way too hard if I went that route and they'd look pretty cheesy

So I'm just taking a basic photography class while I finish up my last semester at a community college. The final project is to create 6 photos that tell a story. I've never done something like this so I'm excited and a little anxious at the same time. So far, my photography has been all over the place testing the waters and trying every new technique I learn. So for this project, I need to narrow things down, and I'm finding it difficult coming up with an idea.

I want to do this project on something that I'm passionate about, because in the end, I think it will reflect in the final product. I love aviation, so I was thinking about going to the local airport and seeing if I could take some portraits with pilots and their respective aircraft. What do you guys think? Any tips/advice for this sort of thing?

Well composed shot, I like where it sits in the frame. The people outside also lend to the picture giving it a certain mood/astmosphere. The car on the left is pretty distracting though.

If you live around the area and have a chance to reshoot this, try going earlier just after sunset when the sky is blue and get a shot without the car.
