K-5 ii: Help needed to Lock Focus and Exposure

Hello
I have K-5 ii camera and I want to do the following but I am unable to do so. Please assume that I am in Aperture Priority (Av) Mode & have the auto-focus enabled.
1) I would like to lock the focus, then press the shutter release button without camera trying to re-focus or use timer button for shooting the picture without the camera tyring to re-focus. I am not clear but it seems I should be able to use the AF button somehow.
2) I would like to lock the exposure and then press the shutter release button without the camera recalculating the exposure. Likewise if I use timer after locking the exposure I would like camera not to re-calculate the exposure. Again I get the feeling the button to use is AE-L.
3) This time I would like to lock both the focus and exposure and perform with the same constraints as described above.

I am not able to do any of the above three; the manual seems to be not clear; maybe I haven't had the chance to read it carefully. I would really appreciate some instructions on the camera settings and the steps while taking the picture. Thank you in advance.

K-5 ii vs K-5 iis comparison with higher sharpness in K-5 ii

I have DA* 55mm with K-5 ii now. I am reading the manual and trying to understand the settings.
I wish to take meteorite pictures tomorrow night (THR: 12/13/2012)
I am now in Manual Mode, with the lens button on the side set to MF. When I rotate the focus ring the camera doesn't zoom to focus point to help me focus. Any settings I need to perform to do so?

I get the feeling since the camera is going to be looking at the sky my lens focal point is going to be set to infinity. Am I right on that?
Since I am looking at infinity I am not interesed in Depth Of Field effect but none-the-less if I set the Aperture high like > 7, the ISO gets too high. I am hoping to capture lowest noise picture possible on this camera. I suppose I can set my Aperture to 2.8 first, I am planning to have shutter open for about 5 seconds and then adjust my ISO till correct exposure appears. At night where should I point my camera to get exposure reading before taking a picture? Also anyone has first cut idea of suitable settings for my described scenario. Please note that there will be a little bit light from near-by buildings.
I just came up with a setting: shutter=5", Aperture=F10, ISO=1600. Perhaps I can go to lower stop on the aperture and get lower in ISO. Ahh so many options...:)

I got to it by pressing LV and then WB button. Then I could scroll down to the sharpness. Yes I am aware of it not impacting RAW pictures.
As per the manual to get to the sharpness control "Press the 4 way controller > in Capture mode"
Q1) Is the 4 way controller the 4 buttons around the OK button?
Q2) What is capture mode?

Thanks

Hello
I am playing with my Av settings and trying to see if I can increase the sharpness just a little bit on my K-5 ii. I don't see Sharpness control, so would it be the "High ISO NR" control under menu 3 that I need to play with to control the sharpness? Thanks

K-5 ii vs K-5 iis comparison with higher sharpness in K-5 ii

Class A. Yes I just looked at the pictures. K-5ii picture was perhaps slightly out of focus or maybe it needed some sharpening. In any case I don't want to deal with moire either so K-5 ii is a good option for me and its en route for delivery.

BTW I believe you mentioned a software you use for deconvoluted sharpness. I have few questions
1. What is this free software name?
2. Is it stable? I have 64 bit XP and 4GB RAM on my laptop
3. When you present your raw image to this software does it pick up all the camera settings, focal length, f stop etc automatically from the header file?
4. It appears Photoshop offers such a sharpnees module as well. Would that be perhaps easier to run?

Thanks

Class A, yes that is exactly the throught process behind my questions. Thank you for putting the details.

To everyone: With due respect I am interested in just applying a little bit of sharpness (not extreme) just enough to be pleasing to the eye on K-5 ii and compare with unsharpened K-5 iis.

Furthermore I am not looking for comparison on pictures of high contrast dense patterns as K-5 ii should naturally likely outperform the k-5 iis under such condition due to anti-aliasing filter.

One day I plan to use a very high zoom to take pictures of animals, sometimes they have dense pattern in their fur/feathers and am concerned about aliasing effects showing up otherwise I would go for K-5 iis. Also there are lots of palm trees where I live, and wonder if aliasing effect will show in the pictures of palm fronds using K-5 iis especially near the region where the frond pattern is dense near the trunk of the tree.
Such are my concerns.

Please read my post carefully. The answer to your question is there.
Again I am not asking to increase Penax K-5iis sharpness. I am asking to increase the sharpness of K-5 ii while keeping the default sharpness of K-5 iis and do the comparison

K-5 ii vs K-5 iis comparison with higher sharpness in K-5 ii

Hello
I have seen pictures of "out of box" camera for both K-5 ii and K-5 iis and K-5 iis comes out ahead except in the case of dense repeating pattern which is to be expected.

Well has anyone really compared the two camers with different settings on both the cameras? Specifically I am interested in seeing pictures under following conditions
1. Several levels of increased sharpness in K-5 ii only vs "out of box" sharpness setting in K-5 iis.
2. Using exceptional fixed focal length lense
3. Great exposure:
3.A) morning time or evening time photos
3.B) Use of tripod
3.C) Low ISO like around 200
3.D) Optimally exposed
If one is able to get equivalent sharpness with K-5 ii under above conditions with higher sharpness settings then I would rather have K-5 ii than K-5 iis given that it (K-5 ii) is cheaper and would be better in repeating dense pattern pictures.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone can post pictures as per above criteria. Thank you

Thank you for putting the picture up. Partly as a result of your effort and others on this post I just went ahead and ordered K-5 ii body only along with DA* 55mm F2.8 lens with B&H for a total of $1548.95 with $150 discount and special pricing on both the items. I think it is a very good deal. I look forward to shooting when they ship out the items as they are out of stock on the lens and don't know when it will arrive. I will post some pictures when I have the chance.
For me the next set of quests would likely be in the following order
A) a high quality polarizer to go along with the lens (more like an immediate issue after I receive my order)
B) a high zoom prime lens that is also WR (about 2 years from now)
C) a camera bag that will accomodate the camera and eventual two camera lenses (2 years from now as I have camera bag for my current one lens need)

Thank you everyone

Hello icywindow
Thanks for showing the pictures. Would you have a frontal portrait picture with following aspects: includes half of upper torso, background fuzzed-out (say ~f/2)?

Amongst all kinds of landscape shots I plan to take portrait picture as per the specification above. I want to make sure it truely does the job and is sharp, devoid of CA on the periphery of the picture. I realize that in order to be very sharp and CA free I have to operate slighly above the lowest f stop on this lens.

Hello
I just had an idea. What if I get a polarizer, would that protect the FA lens from water, humidity? If so would polarizer along with FA lens would make a great (if not truely pentax WR) weather resistant combination?

If not, I suspect I would need to perform cleaning etc if using FA lens. I am going to be buying protection which seems to have free service included. Would that be sufficient?

Thanks

Thank you for the feedback. Looking at pictures and reviews DA* lenses are not as good as FA lense. Since FA lens is not weather resistant (WR) it makes this whole deal pointless at least for me. I live in high humidity environment and also like to take pictures of crashing waves so I should really look into weather resistant lens. I think time is not right for me to buy anything yet. I will wait till Pentax releasese some WR FA lenses and then buy Pentax K-5 ii alongside. Thank you all for the help in arriving at a suitable decision.

Thanks to all for the feedback.
Well let us say that I don't need to have full-frame capable lens as I am not anticipating buying any camera after this one, well at leasat not for 10 years. So given that I suppose Pentax DA 70mm F2.4 Limited is a cheaper option. I just looked at it's spec and looked at some shots and I have following concern:

1. It is not weather resistant (WR) either. As some say dust/water can easily enter non-WR lenses. Whats the point me buying a WR camera then? I think I would like high quality WR lens with around 70mm focal length. It doesn't appear Pentax has anything suitable. Can anyone suggest one or two?

2. From shots online it appears that picture quality with SMC Pentax FA 77mm F1.8 Limited might be better than with Pentax DA 70mm F2.4 Limited. Do you concur with that?

3. Pentax K-5 is lot cheaper than K-5 ii. I know the ISO is considerably higher in ii series but I mostly plan to stick to 200 ISO for daytime/evening shots except for indoor evening pictures. Occasionally I would like to take picture of partly illuminated locations during night time. Do you think I can live with Pentax K-5.

4. Please note that I am mostly interested in Manual photography. Is there an Aperture Priority Mode in Pentax K-5?

5. If I buy a lens that doesn't have aperture ring then can I set aperture from Pentax K-5? If so, is it cumbersome to get to?

Thanks again

Hello
Just to help you answer my questions here is my brief requirement. I am looking for the sharpest, clearest picture possible and I am interested in 77mm focal length. I also plan to buy Pentax K-5 ii camera to go along with it.

I have three questions:
Q1) Is there any difference in-between these two lenses especially performance-wise?
A) SMC Pentax FA 77mm F1.8 Limited
B) Pentax SMC P-FA 77mm F1.8 Telephoto Lens

Q2) Pentax K-5 ii is weather-resistant but it appears that none of these two lenses are. Does this mean that as an overall system I will have a weak weather resistance just because of the lens?

Q3) Is there an alternate non Pentax lens equivalent in performance, size, full-frame capable and bit cheaper?

I look forward to some advice. Thank you in advance
