Tamron SP 70-200mm f2.8 on the K-1

Thanks Mike, that is very helpful. The one thing that has put me off this lens is that it's screw drive, but I guess for the price that is only to be expected!

Thanks Darryl, that's very encouraging. It's also nice to hear good things about the 28-105mm - I'd love to pair my new K-1 with the 24-70mm f2.8 but sadly my budget won't stretch that far it's good to know I shan't be compromising too much!

Sigma Damage to K-1

I've had a look through the forum and can't find an obvious answer to this question, but apologies if it has already been addressed.

I am hoping to get a K-1 in the relatively near future (upgrading from a recently crippled K-5) and would obviously like to be able to use my Sigma 150-500mm lens on it. My question is this: is the damage caused to K-1s by certain Sigma lenses (including the 150-500mm) merely cosmetic or does it have a deeper, functional impact that could harm the camera? In other words, is it essential that I get my lens modified by Sigma before using it on a K-1 or is it just optional?

I never get sick of welcoming people to the K-1 fold. You now own an absolutely awesome camera that will give you a great deal of pleasure. :)

I also went from a K-5 to the K-1 and the step up in image quality is astonishing. Don't get me wrong, I loved my K-5 but the new camera is just in a totally different league.

Pixel Shifted Images

Here is my first experiment with pixel shift, taken at Odiham Castle in Hampshire. Overall I am very happy with the image and would like to try pixel shift on more challenging subjects. The 100% crop (Pic 2) shows the level of detail and sharpness present as well as the quite amazing dynamic range, as shown by the details in the archway and recess shadows. Unfortunately there are some artifacts in the background trees, even with Motion Correction turned on (Pic 3). However, this image was processed in DCU5 (bleh!) and that produced far fewer artifacts than Lightroom did. I really hope that Adobe pull their finger out and get around to supporting pixel shift properly soon.

These are really good! I'm heading to South Wales at the end of the month and will hopefully dark (and clear!) skies that will allow me to give Astrotracer a try.

As someone who has recently gone from a K-5 to a K-1 I can tell you that the answer to this question is a resounding YES! I loved my K-5, but the K-1 is superior in every respect, even when using the same lenses. I recently tried my DA 50mm f1.8 (the cheap, plastic fantastic Pentax prime) and it is incredible, tack sharp out of the camera and absolutely no signs of vignetting when shooting full frame at f11. It's worth taking a look at Ricoh's extremely useful K-1 Laboratory and seeing how your current lenses fare on the K-1.

If you're regularly shooting from a boat then the K-1's 5-axis stabilisation system will prove very useful.

I have a Tamrac Expedition 7X that comfortably takes my Sigma 150-500mm and a K-1 body (either separately or attached) and would have plenty of space for small amounts of clothing and other items. Don't know if you can still get this particular model, but I'm sure they at least do something equivalent. I also have a Tamrac should bag of equivalent size that might suit you even better (I've used it to transport camera gear and act as carry on luggage for a long distance flight in the past).

The F-35 was a first for me. The UK is (in theory) buying 138 of them over the next 15 years or so, so they'll probably become a much more common sight in years to come. Canada was originally going to buy 60-odd units but the Trudeau government canned that idea. Frankly I think they're right - if you're operating over Arctic wilderness then a single engine aircraft is not a good idea, on the basis that it's always preferable to lose an engine rather than the engine!

---------- Post added 07-19-16 at 10:06 AM ----------

There is a vertically mounted lift fan underneath the hatch which is run from the main engine via a very complicated clutch system when vertical flight mode is engaged. At the same time the main engine nozzle twists through 90 degrees to point downwards, meaning the aircraft is held up on two pillars of thrust which is much more stable. All in all some remarkably clever engineering. Just how durable it will prove to be in actual frontline use remains to be seen.

If we're going to be pedantic about this it's much closer in concept to the cancelled Yak-141 Freestyle ;)

I look forward to the day, hopefully soon, when we see F-35Bs launching from HMS Queen Elizabeth. If I'm really lucky I may even get to see it in person and be allowed to take my K-1 with me :D

P.S. Admiral Gorshkov is a frigate, you're thinking of Vikramaditya (which, admittedly, used to be called Admiral Gorshkov before being sold to India). Apologies for being pedantic but this kind of thing is my job and my OCD acts up like mad if I let these things slide :D

K-1 Farnborough Airshow Photos

So, two days after getting my K-1 it gets thrown into the deep end with an outing to this year's Farnborough Airshow. This whole afternoon was very much a learning curve, as was the processing of the shots afterwards. 994 images taken in total, 176 got past the bad/boring image test and 161 were actually processed (God bless Synchronise Settings in Lightroom!) Of these 61 were ultimately converted to JPEGs for further distribution/display. As this was my first real use of the camera I learned several things:

1) The Sigma 150-500mm gave a surprising amount of vignetting at 500mm. Nothing Lightroom couldn't handle, but it was still not something I'd ever seen when using it on my K-5.

2) Back button focusing rocks! For the first time I was actually able to pull off panning shots with a reasonable degree of success. The corollary to this is that, in my opinion, the AF button on the K-1 is too small and in the wrong place. It needs to be where the Green Button is (which is where it is on the K-1) and I found myself pressing this by mistake on a number of occasions. That said, I am sure I will adapt with time.

3) The noise reduction and image processing functions that are turned on by default in the K-1 are not your friend, at least not in this sort of situation, and made image processing more difficult and the results on that processing less satisfactory.

4) For the first time heat shimmer was a factor. I used my K-5 with the same Sigma lens in similar weather conditions at a number of airshows in the past and have never encountered this in the final images.

Anyway, enough chatter. Here are my favourite 5 from the images I took...

Today was a very long day. I had been prepared to wait ages for confirmation that my K-1 had been delivered. What I was not prepared for was it being delivered first thing in the morning, meaning I had to get through a whole day of work knowing that it was sitting at there at home waiting for me!

But anyway, here it is. My new toy. I know, take pictures with it not of it, but I just thought I'd share. I've taken some test shots and will post them, along with my initial impressions, just as soon as I can get Lightroom and/or Windows 10 to play nice.

This morning I have ordered a K-1 and a D-FA 28-105mm to go with it from the lovely people at SRS Microsystems here in the UK. They should arrive at some point tomorrow, and in the meantime I have to fill the interminable wait with deciding what to photograph first! :D
