Last night got very interesting !
When I told her about buying the K-1 she excitedly said where is it at ? I got it it out of my office and she opened it up , put on her favorite hand strap , slapped on her favorite Ricoh Rikenon 50mm P lens and ran outside.
30 minutes later while processing a few images on her desktop I started hearing her little Whispers , Sqeals , and Words of Joy. She came out of my office with a very excited , satisfied , greedy look in her eyes and said , "Does he still have the other one" ? I said I didn't know , Why ? She said I better be quick because she wanted "ME'' to also have a K-1 as this one is now Hers !!!
I said "what about us getting Flippy Screen KS2's or K70's like we planned" ? She looked at me real serious with an Evil little smirk on her face and said .."What" ? Are You I.Q. Minus Zero?
At 10PM last night she drove over to my Bosses house and bought the other K-1..... for Me.

Lightroom Camera Calibration Profile for K-1

It's my first step. I try to put it in a default that gets applied during import.

Settings like highlights, white balance, and contrast are affected by the selected profile. If you change the profile after those other settings, then you might need to redo them.

This is my general workflow:
Profile
Optional crop
Optional B&W conversion
Exposure, including white, highlight, shadow, and black sliders, starting with the slider that needs the most fixing.
Contrast or Clarity. Boosting one is good, boosting both looks overprocessed.
Saturation, Vibrance, or individual HSL sliders. If I don't like colors I might decide to do a B&W conversion now; if yes then earlier exposure setting might need to be revisited.
Other stuff as needed. Sharpening, CA, distortion, etc.
Revisit crop decisions

K-1 Buttons

While on a long (but very worthwhile) commute to Seattle yesterday, I started fiddling with my K-1. I've never had a camera with quite this many buttons before, and I quickly became comfortable with all of them. Instead, I just wanted to mention how nice they are. Buttons that could be confused for each other are either placed at different heights, angled differently or shaped differently. For example, the green button has a green divot, the play button has no marker, and the card switch/AF select button is smaller than the other two.

Pentax FA 35mm f2 AL vs Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art lens

The FA35 and its younger sibling the DA35 have hybrid aspherical elements so are nice and sharp.

The FA31 has a genuine one piece aspherical element and nine rounded blades. Beautiful pics, very expensive.

The Sigma has what a heap of quality corrective glass can bring - astonishingly sharp, beautiful bokeh, f1.4, etc. Very heavy and bulky, but attractive pricing.

Pentax FA 35mm f2 AL vs Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art lens

I have neither lens, but it looks like an almost "apples to oranges" comparison. The Sigma is much larger, heaver and more expensive than the Pentax. According to reviews on Photozone, the Pentax has a very good image quality, but the Sigma is even better. Personally, I have the Pentax 35mm f.24; all plastic, but great image quality and the price is right. IMHO, it comes down to how much you want to spend, and how much you are willing to schlep around.

The da f2.4 is fine but I liked the FA 35 f2 better. The FA rendered different and I liked it better. The FA 31 is better but the size advantage clearly goes to the FA.

I have a declicked manual focus only FA 35 in the marketplace. It suffered s fall and was restored to functioning this way. That is a cheap way to determine if the lens renders the way you want.

The Sigma has a good reputation but is also supposed to be pretty bigo.

I know everyone's already sick of posts like these, but I'm so ecstatic that I have to share this with the world.

Bought 'used' in Switzerland, five months old. Looks like new. I am also very happy to report that it works with the dreaded Sigma 70-200 without problems even though I haven't sent it for a firmware upgrade.

Imaging Resource: image quality comparisons with 5D Mark IV includes K-1

I'm quite comfortable with the capabilities of my cameras, regardless of what I see in comparison shots on Imaging Resource or DPReview. DPR seems to be infested with Canikon fanboys/gear heads who spend more time criticizing SONY and Pentax than they do shooting. I don't read the postings that often but it seems when I do, I see the same screen names posting the same arrogant comments over and over. They particularly like to perpetuate the myths that Pentax cameras can't focus and there are no Pentax lens worth having.

The AF myth is particularly frustrating. I recently rented the Pentax 60-250mm F4 and I found the focusing just as quick and the IQ just as good as the Canon 70-200mm F4, which is considered one of the sharpest lens in the Canon catalog. I shot Canon for many years and I simply haven't found any limitations with my Pentax gear for my shooting style.

The other issue, which has some validity, is that of video quality. Admittedly the K1 video isn't in the came class as other bodies but then neither is the video from Nikon or Canon bodies when compared to Panasonic or SONY. Canon fell into the DSLR video market by accident, literally. When the 5D2 was released, the video capability was pretty much an afterthought, just as it is now in the K1. Amateur film makers picked up on it and perpetuated Canon. Yet the new 5D4 is handicapped badly in video because Canon refuses to upgrade capabilities that would cannibalize sales of their pro video bodies, in spite of the fact that Panasonic and SONY are eating their lunch in the video arena. The fact is the video output of the K1 is actually not that bad. It's not GH4 or a7s quality but it is certainly useable if a bit of care is taken in setting up the camera and clips are graded in Photoshop or Premiere. I find it considerably better than the original 5D2 which is still used for video shoots.

End of rant. :-)

Iknow I am weird so please don't go there. I do appreciate the link beingposted. I have had quite a few different digital cameras. In the past I wouldhave been right there reading and then drooling over the newest camera. Sellingor trading mine at a loss. Now that it has been out for a while there areseveral threads here on the forum and reviews out there about the K-1 and whatit does well and what it does not.

Forthe first time I don't care. I read them and don't care. I look at my ownresults. I look at the wonderful examples people on this forum are posting. Idon't care what the reviews are saying. The results speak for themselves. Otherthan for a few specialized uses (which I am not into since I do not shootvideo, fast action motion and I use raw) the K-1 is excellent. I think we aregetting close to the point of diminishing returns in this industry for allpurposes other than commercial.

Thiscomparison is interesting but does nothing to sway me. My camera acquisition syndrome seems tobe cured by the K-1, well at least in remission.

I strongly oppose doing statistics as that is not my approach at all. But the technocratic non-keeper rate was certainly less than 10% on all shots excluding my tries on panning. Panning I was so bad, I got only about 1 out of 12 in the quality I wanted. But that really has nothing to do with the equipment. That is purely my incapability that needs a lot more practise.

My personal aim is to get somewhere between 10 and 30 "keepers" out of any photographic activity. Neither me nor my friends and family are interested in watching slideshows of dozens or hundreds of images flying past at 1 pic/second.
When I was a child I had to endure "slideshow evenings" of my family. Not enjoyable.

The above target number range is regardless of the event being a 14 day vacation or a half day trip. It's also regardless of my having shot 40 shots or 3,000 originally. I want a dozen or two nice images, no more, and I am happy. One good roll of film, so to say. :D

Long exposure PS work without motion correction.

It should not work with moving things but if you expose long enough...

I also converted Zeiss 28/2 Distagon .ZF to Pentax K using Leitax kit. The operation was easy but took some time. Here is full res example what the output looks like @ f/8:
http://mjkoski.1g.fi/kuvat/Miscellaneous/trash/_IMG0797.jpg/_full.jpg

PS enters the world of moire. That 28/2 Zeiss outresolves 24-70 and 15-30 D-FA zooms by a clear margin (especially the 24-70) stopped down.

And a test out in the wild. Not meant to be taken seriously though (over saturated for fun), it's mostly a test of resolution and sharpness of the K-1 and Samyang 24mm combo.

I can't plan my astronomy more than an hour ahead let alone months in advance, but that is all part of the fun of living on an island in the North Atlantic under the circumpolar jet stream, it is supposed to be high summer and we currently have high winds, light rain, 100% low cloud but at least it is quite warm at 17C. Someone once described living in the UK as like living in a Tupperware box, every time you look up all you see is grey. :D

I find that I have trouble, while on my inversion table at midnight in a driving rain storm with my wife screaming at me from the front porch and spotlighting me with a powerful LED flashlight, I have trouble getting a focus lock on a gnats a$$ perched on a petunia in the front flower bed. Other than that it functions just fine.
