Thanks barondla and PiDicus Rex for the kind comments.
I am a practitioner of image stacking, a technique for creating depth of field in high magnification photos. The technique is best described at the
Photomacrography.net web site here: www.photomacrography.net :: View topic - Tabletop "macro" setup
Charles Krebs was one of the early practitioners and the excellence of his images set the bar pretty high.
My own rig is not as clean as Charles, but it is functional. It is described here: www.photomacrography.net :: View topic - Upgrade to BugEX home rig
There is a "process" video I made and posted on YouTube here... You Tube |
src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/OpyNnh1w0_g?controls=1" allowfullscreen> |
On this particular image (posted in the Pentax Forum above) I used my 10X Olympus microscope lens with a 200mm Pentax telephoto as a tube lens and the rig described in the links above. I would have used my K-5 and a 2 second exposure with LED lighting.
If you like this sort of thing, I would encourage you to visit the Photomacrography.net site and check out the images posted in the "technical and studio" forum. There are many absolutely spectacular images there. Also great suggestions on how to assemble a "rig" if you wish to give it a whirl.
Kind regards,
Keith Short

An interesting idea. The exposure stacks are normally about 80-200 deep so a three shot bracket would not be of much use. And the exposure setting is "manual" for these so I am not sure how the camera would execute the bracket.
I tried turning off exposure noise reduction and that made no difference.
This is a typical image... |

Thanks. I'll give this a try.
I am also hoping that it may allow me to shorten the time between shots also. Currently my exposure duration is 1 second. I trigger the shutter with the IR remote. I find that if I do not wait long enough for the live view to activate the remote won't trigger the next exposure. The best I have been able to do is 1 exposure every 4 seconds. I was hoping for a higher rate.
During the summer when I take bug photos I gather 3-4 stacks, each with about 200 images each day... The image count piles up...

I use my K-01 for stacking photos for insect photography. typical image
I do not need to use the "live view" between the manually exposed images. Is there a way to avoid the extra shutter opening that currently occurs to facilitate live view between exposures?
Thanks

I have been trying to use IR to trigger my K-01 on a focus stacking rig. I hacked into an inexpensive e-bay IR remote and interfaced it to my home built stacking controller. The controller moves the subject, triggers the shutter repeat etc... With previous Pentax cameras I used the wired trigger and the delay from triggering to shutter actuation was quite predictable. With the IR remote there is a long delay from when the camera finishes writing to disc and when an IR trigger signal will be accepted. If I just press the shutter button there is no similar delay. Has anyone else had similar problems?

I do lots of time lapse. I have used an ist*, K100, K5 and now a K3. I purchased a K-01 expecting to,use it for time lapse but don't see how to turn off the display and the monitor runs down the battery rather quickly. Is it possible to turn off the display? While I can tether it to a power supply indoors, it is not practical out of doors doing sunsets etc...

Many thanks for your help in decoding my "fat finger" error! And for the tips on how to take advantage of the Composite mode I accidentally discovered.

Wibbly,
I think I was in the right mode. However if I accidentally created the averaging by entering an odd ball mode, I would love to know how to disable it.
I have posted the two images on my Flickr account so that you can see the full scale images and exif data (?)...

I did a quick read and discovered that the Composite mode, right next to Interval mode on the menu... I have some egg on my face as the quick test I just performed in Interval mode worked just fine. I suspect I was in Composite mode and did not realize it when I gathered this sequence. A great relief not to have to send my camera into the shop!
Many thanks to the folks that contributed to my enlightenment! Who knew...

Steve and Adam, Both exposures were with 1/320 sec exposure. 80 second apart. Interval mode, single exposure. Shake reduction was enabled.
Is there a way to attach a larger image or include EXIF data?

I have a K3 purchased 18 months ago. I have been very happy with this camera. I have used it for time-lapse movies using the built in interval timer. I am very happy that it allows 2000 images rather than the 1000 with my previous K5. Today I tried the camera and it did not work properly when collecting a series of images. The images started fine but the moving bits became blurry, almost as though I was getting time exposures rather than short images. I had success collecting a string of images with the camera several weeks ago and it has only started acting up after an airline trip. I put in a recharged battery and the problem persisted. I reset all of the settings to the defaults and the problem persists. Any suggestions before sending it to the shop?
The first and last images of a string of 8 images are attached. They were taken at 10 second intervals.

Greetings,
I use my K100D in a macro photo rig to gather images for photo stacking for enhanced depth of field. Typically each composite image I produce requires ~ 120-200 images in the stack. Thus I take lots of photos with my K100D. My camera is triggered remotely by a computer which controls my stacking rig. I have the latest update to the camera's firm-ware which allows me to use larger memory cards. Typically I use a 16GB card as I shoot RAW. Recently I was having a problem that when I switched on my camera, the camera would not "wake up" properly. Its symptoms were that the LCD display by the shutter release would briefly wake up and then disappear. The camera would then act completely dead. No responses to the shutter release button or other controls or switches on the camera.
At first I wondered if the computer interface cable or the power supply cables were at fault. Weather plugged in or unplugged with fresh batteries, it made no difference. Then I wondered if the firm-ware had some how become corrupted. I reformatted a small 2 GB card and downloaded the latest update and got ready to install it. With this card, however, the camera booted just fine. Then I realized my large 16 GB card had many extra files on it including some PowerPoint presentations and other Windows files and folders that perhaps the camera did not recognize and may have been confused by... So I backed up the memory card elsewhere and reformatted it. Now the camera starts right up.
I pass this along in case others may encounter something similar.

I am a new forum member.
I have been using Pentax equipment since I was an undergraduate student in the early 1970's. I graduated from film to digital a few years back with an *ist DS, then migrated to a K100D and now a K5. I chose Pentax because my old lenses could still be used. These lenses include a Pentax 50mm macro lens and a Vivitar 100- 300 mm macro zoom lens. The only automatic lens I own that the digital bodies "drive" are the 18-55 mm lenses that came with the *ist DS and the K100D.
My principal interest in my photographic hobby is taking insect photos. I do macro candids" in the field with the K5 as well as stacked photos in my basement studio with the K100D.
I joined the forum to get some help with the Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 (PCDU) software. I have used the older software that came with the *ist DS without difficulty, but thought I should start using the more modern stuff. I was having diffulty processing a folder of raw images with the new software. Happily I have found some tips on website that I am anxious to try.
Kind regards,
Keith
