Canon and Nikon have nice lenses too. I have also some Canon lenses from another life 135L, 100L macro, 70-200 2.8 II, ... Though, I like the outstanding performance of these lenses, I adore my Pentax lenses. I forgive my FA small flaws (as their lateral color fringe), Nothing replaces the feel of the FA 77 and 31 in my hands. I am a bit less enthusiastic with my FA 43 but I enjoy going around with it, or with the small DA 15, DA 35 macro and DA 70. It is not just about the sharpness, smooth bokeh and lack of distortion of a lens. There is some magic in some Pentax lenses I cannot describe better. It comes in addition to size, feel, mechanics and performance. For me, the DFA* doesn't carry this magic. It belongs to the same league as the best Canon, Nikon. But this is just my opinion and probably not shared by many others. Congratulations for the DFA* 50.

I would appreciate to see the photos that allowed these lenses to be ranked better than the others. May be I voted for some of them?
In 2014, the lenses were thought as a whole not just from some photos. This makes a big difference for me. Even if I have no doubt about the quality of the pictures it delivers, I would not personally vote for the DFA* 50 as the best lens because: 1) It is too big and too heavy 2) It does not have manual aperture 3) lacks character in its built compared to the three amigos.

I never tested it. It does not have AF. I would like to see a comparison of the two.
A good alternative outside of Pentax is the Sigma 35 Art. I have it, it is great but I prefer my 31.

IMHO: The f1.4 gives you a better blur but more CA/PF. The sharpnes is great on both, no noticeable difference on portrait. You will not regret your choice 85 or 77.

I do not have the 55 and the 85. I used the 55. I have the 31, the two DA 35/40/ 43/DA 50 (and the M-50)/DA 70 /FA 77/D-FA 100.
The DA 40 and FA 43 are two very different beasts as long as you do not close the 43 below f8. The 43 is a portrait lens: wide open, it is very sharp in the center and very soft in the corners. This is shared with the 55. The 40 is sharp (very but less than the 43) along all the frame. It is not as good for portraits but excels as a walk around lens if you like the FL. The 55 sharpness is more uniform along the frame than the 43, sharper in the corners but much softer in the center below f2.8, with a better bokeh. For portrait the FA 43 is the better choice but the 55 is also good.
The FA 31 is better optics; shapness, color, bokeh and build than all the other 35/40/43/55 you can put on Pentax. The FA 77 is the only other lens I own that I put in the same class. Its only flaw is CA/PF at large aperture. The 85mm will not provide better images.
I 'll go for 77 + 43.

On shelves silver lenses are more beautiful but not on cameras.
No doubt that an aperture ring is useful for those who are not faithful to the brand. But most major compagnies (Canikon, ...) understood some time ago that it is better for them to get rid of it.

My observation is:
1- at the photo exhibitions where I saw Pentax/Ricoh (exemple salon de la photo): All DA D-FA lenses, Ltd or not, were all shown. But there was no FA limited. Pentax does not want to push them as main products for their cameras. they were made for film era.
2- soon or later, the FA limited will be updated as it is done for all other lenses, of any major compagny.
3- It will be strange to see an aperture ring on an updated FA ltd. Aperture is electronically controled on all new cameras and on all new lenses of Pentax (idem for Canon, Nikon and Sony).
So I think that either, FA ltd will disappear, or they will be updated with no aperture ring.

The day I got the Sigma 70mm, I tested it taking my usual same test picture of a scenery at about 500 meters. Looking at the picture, I started wondering that there was some artifact, a structure of the pavement that I did not see before. But of course it was the lens was just sharper than the others with as stronger microcontrast therfore showing details other lenses had trouble resolving:D.
For portraits, I prefer the 77 to any other lens I tried in Pentax-Taks which give great results (31, 35, 43, 50, 55, 70, 100). One single exception is the Canon 135 on my other gear, the Canon 135 f2. It is subjective of course.

I was writing about standard lenses. I prefer a bad bokeh to this garbage where part of the light is not passing in tne glass. But this is just my opinion. ---------- Post added 11-27-14 at 10:42 AM ----------
I own it, as well as the two othe FA ltds, the DA 35 Ltd and non ltd...and many others. These lenses are wonder but they do not break the laws of optics which force you to make some compromise.

You can see what I was saying about the uniform discs on the top left corner? this is what I call good bokeh of a very sharp lens but not the best bokeh. Please do not confuse with the blur and separation of the subject/background.
May be you want to check for more precise information on the subject:

For most photographs the "majestic bokeh", as you call it, is associated with the fact that bokeh discs have fuzzy edges and melt with other discs. Such a property can not come along with exceptional sharpness, because this soft disc edges come as the result of spherical abberation. You can see this in the fact that the lens gets sharper when the diaphragme is closed (also correcting some other abberation).
The best sharpness you can hope for is the technically good bokeh where the discs are uniform . It can give this impression of busy background (see photozone for the DA 35 macro)
For wide angle, look for a good aspherical lens. If the blades are "rounded", both bokeh and sharpness then can improve when you get rid of the remaining abberation by closing the diaphragm a bit. But, because of the way some aspherical glasses are build, be careful that this often lead to an onion structure in the disc.

Why not the DA 35 f2.4? It has its flaws but itis supposed to be cheap with very good optics and claimed to be FF compatible.

I, myself, asked the representative at the Pentax booth of the "Salon de la photo" and I got the answer that it is just rumors, and if such a camera is in preparation none of the people he knows at Pentax France have been told. We have no other options than wait or go manual focus.

The uneducated one is kh1234567890
You would not do it for hybrid glass, but for elements glued together. It is a delicate work but it sometimes done to save some old expensive lenses (Leica for example).

I have over 150 lenses. I have glued a few very old ones with "résine du canada", I suppose it translates into "Canada balsam". I did it to remove fungus. I put the glued elements in hot water, melted the old glue, removed it and put back a new one. That was not easy but I did it for fun. I was teaching optics at the university, so I had some equipment at that time.
That was not hybrid element, as this was for very old lenses. How do you know that the DA-15 has the aspherical element is hybrid glass? I was just explaining that the process of repairing a lens is not easy even if it can be done sometimes. I do not recommend any one to do it. No need to call someone idiot on a forum if you are educated.

I would not send such a body for repair. You need to make sure the camera does not get worse, and at least put some gaffer to protect the hole. It seems to me that the Sigma will be too expensive for what it costs to repair unless you get parts from an old cheap lens.
Unfortunately accidents happen in life. The most important is that you are safe.

You first need to open the lens. How many lenses have you opened? then you need to identify the problem. Will you be able to figure this out? If it can be repaired without changing one of the elements, then in theory you can do it yourself. If you need to glue two elements of a group back together, it can be done but it is hard because you need to keep things clean from dust. Otherwise, you will probably not be able to do it.
Best is to send it for an estimate and then you will see.

Quote: I've owned the DA15 (and foolishly sold it) and I've never seen the level of CA as in the pics Rasmus has posted. I think something's wrong... I wonder if elements are becoming separated. As I wrote, we can build theories, but not having the lens in our hand (and may be open it) it is hard to check. Another one is the fact that the AL Pentax lenses use "plastic" aspherical glass (except for the FA 31). This can get deformed, in theory, with time if subject to some strongly varying physical conditions (temperature). Another case (common on some 70-200 zooms) is that a glass moves inside the lens. All this does not solve the issue.

About the fact that field curvature does not disappear with closing the lens aperture: LensRentals.com - Field Curvature and Stopping Down
I would be you, I will make more tests with scenery including targets at different distances and check if there are targets on the sides that are reasonably sharp. Use tripod etc ...
Next, if things are the same, I would compare with another DA 15.
If things remain as bad, then there is a problem. We can build theories but hard to check.

I agree your image (the recent one) really soft in sides, so soft that it hurts my eyes. Is that the case of all your recent pictures?

It seems you just discovered what every one knows about the smc DA 15, you might as well check photozone test and samples. It is soft on the boundaries and has a non-negligeable field curvature. The presence of CA on the boundaries does not help the softness of wide angle lenses photographs on the corners.
Or, may be your message was just ironic?
