2018 Pentax Survey

I agree with Atindra and possibly others. Too many questions; I skipped the software page altogether. I realize you can't cater to everyone's needs/wants but, one basic hardware option would be a fully articulating LCD screen. I also would have liked to have seen the lens option for the 20-40mm zoom.

It'll surely catch ones eye when out in the field but, what comes out of the K-50 is what will draw new users to Pentax like an opiate. My son uses a Canon 70D and he's now compelled to borrow my K5-IIs and 18-135 WR lens whenever he heads out into the Alaskan outdoors (recently dip netting then, caribou hunting). He comments on the rich depth to the images as opposed to his. Okay.. so just mail the camera to me now, Adam. ;) Thanks for the opportunity.

It may just be me but, were we ever discussing front focus, back focus and decentered focusing when we used film cameras? Could be because there wasn't an auto-focusing mechanisms and sensors involved but, now, it seems disconcerting that one has to even be concerned with such issues considering they don't give lenses away. At least the Limited editions. I ordered the 21mm Limited from B&H and then, later, got a screaming deal on Amazon for the 35mm Limited. Let's hope it isn't a gray market unit. It'll either work or it won't. That's probably the lens I would have used on that floral cluster, Christian. Not that I know what I'm talking about. :)

I'll probably take your advice. I ordered a B+W filter but, one never knows. Speaking of filters, if I pack along a CP filter, is there any good way to clean those?

I agree. I ordered a UV filter so, I'll either use that and no hood or, slap the hood on without a filter. I'm not too concerned. Thanks much.

I just ordered that lens from B&H. My decision was based on all of the help I received in here. I'm really appreciative of everyone's input. I wanted the 15mm based on the built in lens hood alone but, went with a more applicable lens for my needs. I'll get used to the slightly goofy lens hood or, not use it at all.

Great shots! Do you prefer this 21mm over, say, the 15mm? I'm going to buy one or the other. I'm just stuck on which one.

Thanks again, Nicolas. You do a great job of working that 15mm to get the most out of your images. I think I was attracted to that lens by the rich colors I've seen in the Forum. Reminded me of Kodachrome film. I realize some of that could have been applied during post-processing but, all the same, it's pleasing to the eye. I'm assuming that 21 could hold its own without as much distortion.

What about rain and such on the DA21 lens face? The lens hood could protect against some moisture but not all. I'll look into the reverse filter at B&H. Thanks, kh.

Hi, Brandon... I love your shots with the 15mm. I'm currently vexed over whether to get the 15mm or the 21mm. The 21's proprietary lens hood and not being able to throw a UV protective filter onto it is problematic for me but, which lens do you feel provides the best results? I've been drawn to the 15mm's images I've seen in this Forum more so than the 21 but, in the reviews here, the 21mm is rated as a sharper, better rated lens. ???

Good Travel Lens for My K5-IIs

These are great suggestions and, A LOT of help. My 18-135mm is my go-to hiking lens up here as it's durable, WR and provides good images. I understand the ease of use and versatility of the zoom, especially when traveling. My only lingering thought is, am I being lazy by NOT bringing two primes and leaving the zoom or, am I being smart by sticking with the 18-135? That old saying "Necessity is the mother of invention" might be in-play if I take two primes. The though process continues. Thanks again. And, Nicolas, thank you so much for the samples and the links. I'll be looking at those for sure. I was drawn more to your Pentax HD 15mm images than to your 21mm's.

I love that shot where you're looking over the bridge (15mm), Nicolas. I'm all over the map now with what I want to take on the trip. The 18-35mm is a BIG lens yet, weather resistant. The thought of a 21mm and a 35mm - both Limited and MUCH smaller - are getting my serious attention. Will I miss the longer zoom? Maybe. Yet, what I lose in that, I might just make up in image quality. Thanks a lot for posting the images.

Nicolas... I wanted a sharper, compact lens for street photography and some landscape/castle shots as we'll be touring Germany and Austria in May. Since we're doing the backpack thing, I was only planning on "one" lens (my 18-135) yet, the 21mm is so small it would hardly make a difference in terms of taking up space and might provide that Limited lens quality that I don't have now. The one I'd really like is the 35mm HD Limited yet, it's not quite wide enough once I factor in the crop (56mm). Heck, I don't know.

Well, after reading over the posts, I'm thinking of buying a 21mm HD Limited as a second lesson this trip. It's really close to the 35mm lens that was my standard walk around lens for my K2 when I shot film. I know I've seen 15mm and 31mm in the replies yet, I think that the 33mm equivalent of the 21 might be a good fit for me. It's affordable and compact as well. Any thoughts?

Thanks very much for all of your feedback. I'll definitely be taking my 18-135mm and, possibly, look into a prime of some sort. I own many great lenses from the film days (50 f/1.8, 35 f/2.8, 28 f/2.8 - all M-Series) but haven't have a lot of luck getting satisfactory results. I take the blame for that in not spending enough time with using my manual lenses. Again, sincere thanks to everyone for contributing. I appreciate it very much.

Thanks, LoneWolf. I have a son in Germany and relatives in Austria so, we'll have to make it to Scotland on another trip. I'd take more than I am planning to but, we're going to be traveling with backpacks only. This is probably our last time over there so, that's why I was entertaining the 20-40mm and just moving myself closer for the longer zooms. Like in the old days. :)

Thanks, BigMack... It's looking like I'll just go with my 18-135. I'll have to remember to keep it "in the zone" while I'm shooting.

My apologies if this has been covered multiple times over the years. I'm taking a trip to Europe and just taking a backpack. I usually carry a large camera bag and that just ain't fitting the plan this time around. I have a 18-135mm WR that I might take but, wanted to know what others thought abou a 20-40mm instead. Or, I could throw caution to the wind and buy the 16-85mm and not worry about the size of the lens. Any general comments on the Limited lens vs the longer zoom ranges? Is the 16-85mm "that" much better than the 18-35mm? Or, is the 20-40mm a no-brainer due to it being a Limited and supposedly sharper and faster?

"Pros" talking trash about Pentax?

I think that I agree with GeneV. I bought my first Pentax - a Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic F - when I was in Junior High, straight out of Jafco catalog. Why? Because I thought the name "Pentax" looked and sounded cooler than the rest. I got VERY lucky as that was a fantastic camera. I still pledge allegiance to Pentax but, am a tad disappointed. To a degree, I think we all are yet, like Gene, it serves my needs. I am envious, though, of other camera brand owners and the plethora of product and accessories available to them. The last lens that I purchased, a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8, I waited over two months for B&H to get it in stock. I even wrote to the product manager at Sigma. Oh well.

abmj... Well, in America, yes. We were hiking in Utah in 2009 and, because of my K20D slung over my shoulder, a younger German fellow walked aside me and said "Nice camera." He had the same camera, different lens. Fast forward to later in the year and, he and his future wife drove up to Anchorage and stayed with us for a few days. Since that time, I have seen ZERO Pentax cameras anywhere. Not that I get out a lot but, alas, that seems to be the case. In Europe and Asia, I'm sure it's a different story. But, since I don't plan to relocate, it's a pain finding product selection. Good news, though. My son shoots real estate photography and, on a hike this past summer, he asked to use my K5 IIs. I was more than happy because that left me free to enjoy the view and keep up. He wants it. The ergonomics are far more intuitive than a Canon yet, he can buy anything, anywhere for that camera of his and know that new products are always made first for Canons and Nikons.
