The first picture was made with the standard 105mm, wide-open on 2.4.
The other two were shot with the 45mm 4.0. It's a "super wide-angle", but it's a lens with almost no distortion, a big pro to me. :)

I found out a tripod isn't even that necessary!
Like Elliot said, I also use the pin to keep the lens open, then release it and take the picture! By the way, I always focus by moving the camera, not the focusring, for me, that works very well. :)
With 28mm you get a huge magnifictation, which is in my opionion not very nice to work with, you could only get a picture of a small part of the insect.
Do you already have some testshots?

Well, I am sure mine wasn't that thick! So, there is indeed a difference between Rexatar and Exaktar :)
How did it work out for you? Do you already have some testshots?

Mine was already damaged, so I just gave it a hard smack, while it was in a bag of course. :p
You said you've a "rexatar", is that the same as my "exaktar" ?
Nice to hear you're trying it yourself! :D

Haha, you are right, there are some better/easier/safer ways to remove the glass.
Mine already had some bursts, fungus and dust in it, so I didn't really care about the lens anymore haha. I got it for free with some lenses I bought.

Maybe it's better to replace it to the pentax slr forum?

Thanks a lot guys!
I also was a bit sceptical about the "dead space" :p
But when I tried to crop it, it didn't look as in balance as it is now.
Mighty power of the rule of thirds??? hahaha

A few moths ago, I wanted to start with macro photography, but unfortenately, most of the lenses are quite expensive or they only offer some kind of strange "close-up". because I knew it wouldn't my main subject of photography I wanted to make something myself.
I read about extension tubes, reversing a lens and other things like that and decided to make my own set-up by using these things.
Maybe I can inspire you to make your own set-up by showing you what I did.
What i used by making this lens:
- 50mm prime, like the M 50mm 1.7 or the A 50mm 1.7
- Some old 135mm you don't use
- In my case it was a 135mm m42, so I also needed a m42/pK adapter
- Tape or Glue
- Hammer
Step 1: What I did was hollowing out the old 135mm, put it in some kind of bag and hammer all the glass out. Be carefull!
Make sure to get rid of all of the dust and little pieces of glass! They could get into your camera body, or your own body.
I also hold it under running water, just to be sure.
step 2: Get your 50mm prime and put it, reversed, on your hollowed out lens, now glue it on the prime or just use some tape if you still want to be able to use the 50mm.
Step 3: Put it on your camera, If you used a m42 "donorlens" put the adapter on. It will look something like this:
Well, that's it!
The reason why I used a 135mm prime lens and not extension tubes is because you can still use the manual focus ring of the lens and make a longer or shorter extension tube! Thiss all without mounting them on and off. To me that was an advantage. I also didn't want to spent money on those tubes and found this old donorlens and gave it a try!
So, if you don't want to spend a lot of money and want to try macro photography, I think this may be a good start.
* Because my old Ist Dl and K10d are not always that great with ISO, I somethimes also used a flash. I used an old 5$ flash or I made my own internal flash extension tube with some carboard and a little peace of foam.
Most of the time I used ISO 400, with F5.6/11 and a ST of 1/30 - 1/180 sec
I don't really use Flickr, but here's a set of examples: Macros - a set on Flickr

hi!
Normally I also like real blacks and whites more, but for this picture, I Thought a little bit softer tones would be nicer.
I will take another look in LR to see if I think different about that now. :)

Hi there! My name is Sebastiaan and I'm from the Netherlands.
Interested in photography and particular in black and white, portraits and street photography.
I was using all the things this site offers for quite some time, but didn't registered, till now. :)
This site is a great place for all the pentax-users, all the information, reviews, databases are just great!
I think Pentax is a very nice brand with some huge advantages over Canon and Nikon. :P
I'm using a Pentax k10d and Ist Dl with quite some fast primes, both mf and af.
I hope to learn a lot of things on this site from you guys!
thanks! 500px / Sebastiaan van Venetiën / Photos |
