Turn my K50 into a 'street' camera

The normal focal lengths (40 to 55mm) require strong composition/balance and a good sense of perspective to make a picture work.

Looking at your pictures I also feel that you should work a bit more on selecting the main subject and finding a way to make it stand out.
Elect your subject and then move around it looking for a good "framing" taking photos from different angles.

Have a look here:

This talk on composition is also a must:

One of NGO's phtographers (Alan Harvey or Abell) once shot an assignment on dirt track racing with a Leica M and some wide and standard primes.

I think that even though there are more adequate lenses for a certain genres, it's always good to challenge ourselves.
The "wrong" lens can actually make us "see" and "think" harder and deeper into a subject and the results might very well be much more interesting than "taking the easy way".
I don't use zooms for that reason.

Do you really need a FF ? Why ?

From where I'm standing it looks like your behaviour is overly defensive, as if (someonelse's preference for) FF were somehow threatening your beliefs.
If "every system is a set of compromises. APS-c is your favourite set of compromises", just relax and enjoy it.
And as you've so rightly mentioned in a previous post, I should be shooting FF; I should be the unhappy soul.

A quick scan of a photo taken on film in September 2000.
I was walking about an old abandoned hospital in the island of São Tomé (West Africa) and as I turned around this little girl that had been following me around was peeking through a hole in a mosquito net.
I barely had time to frame and focus...

Ricardo

If you have a look at Photozone.com you'll see that there aren't many PK-AF lenses that perform reasonably well in the borders between 17 and 24mm.

If I have to shoot groups I generally use the 21mm (whenever that's wide enough) and sharpen the borders with a "gradual" mask…wider FLs usually distort too much anyway.

I nominate this photo.

Finally a black and white portrait that has not been overprocessed!
You say that you don't shoot street but this is a very fine effort.
I really like the tight composition and the facial expression…it's the kind of image that interests me most.

Cheers,
Ricardo

I nominate this photo.

I like the kid's expression and the way he stands out of the whitewashed background for being in the shade.
I wonder if the photo would look better if his sister were a bit whitewashed as well…

Ricardo

I nominate this photo.

Interesting contrast between space and subject, very nice framing and light.
(I don't like the flare effect, but maybe it couldn't have been avoided…)

Ricardo

The DA limited is 20-40? and WR?!

According to Photozone:

• the FA 31mm @ f1.8 has depth-of-field of f2.7 when compared to full frame

• the DA 18-55mm @ f3.5 has depth-of-field of f5.3 when compared to full frame

So the 20-40mm will not be able to produce the shallow depth of field effect that the 31mm can.

Compact limiteds are small and light but the "smaller" apertures have downsides: darker VF image, "slower" auto-focus and not as shallow depth of field effect.

This is why Pentax really must produce a fast set "standard" focal length lenses:

• DA f2/18mm (~f3/28mm FOV & DOF equiv.)

• DA f2/24mm (~f3/35mm FOV & DOF equiv.)

• DA f1.4/35mm (~f2.1/50mm FOV & DOF equiv.)

• DA f1.8/35mm (~f2.7/50mm FOV & DOF equiv.)

• DA f1.8/60mm (~f2.7/90mm FOV & DOF equiv.)

Adequate testing is fine, one doesn't have to measure everything.

Nikon and Canon sell APS lenses and bodies as well as FF lenses and bodies and they keep developing new products for both systems.
Sigma and Tamron also make lenses for both formats.

If someone is happy with the APS + DA(*) Pentax system then I see no need to replace it.
Nowadays people seem too obsessed with upgrading and owning the latest (professional, "top of the range") gear...
I don't remember this happening in the film days; before the internet and personal credit we weren't so restless.

Cheers,
R
