Item for Sale
Cokin P Holder with 52mm Adapter Ring and 2 Hitech ND filters - shipped

Asking Price
40.00 USD

Item Location
Asheville, NC (United States)

Item Description
I have a used Cokin CBP40052 P-Series Holder with a 52mm Adapter Ring, a Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Resin Filter - Soft Edge, and a Hitech 85mm Solid Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Resin filter that I am selling together as a package.

Under close inspection, both of the Hitech resin filters have some light scratches and scuffs which ironically came from storing them in the plastic protective envelopes that were provided by the manufacture. However, these scratches are negligible in terms of the filters functionality. As shown in the last 4 images below, the scratches do not show up in photos or affect image quality whatsoever.

Sample Photo:
1) No Filters
2) Solid ND
3) Graduated ND
4) Solid + Graduated ND

The real advantage of the Cokin system is compatibility. Adapter rings for other sized lenses can be purchased inexpensively at B&H or Amazon.

Item for Sale
49mm Marumi Super DHG Polarizer

Asking Price
25.00 USD

Item Location
Asheville, NC (United States)

Item Description
I have a used 49mm Marumi DHG Super Circular P.L.D polarizing filter in good condition for sale. The Marumi features a slim design that makes it suitable for wide angle lenses and front lens caps can be attached to the filter when its mounted. The Marumi is of good construction and built with quality materials.

Under close inspection, there is a small scratch on the front of filter that can be seen in the first attached photo. It does not affect image quality or the function of the polarizer whatsoever.

Price includes shipping. I no longer have the original packaging for the filter, so it will come in another plastic filter case that I found here in my house.

Item for Sale
Pentax-DA 40mm F/2.8 Limited

Asking Price
195.00 USD

Item Location
Asheville, NC (United States)

Item Description
I have a used Pentax-DA 40mm F/2.8 Limited lens in good condition for sale. The glass elements are clean and clear of scratches, the aperture is free and snappy, and the autofocus is quick and smooth.

Under close inspection, the black exterior finish on the lens and cap has a few minor scratches and shows a small amount of brassing. The lens was recently serviced at a local repair shop for sticky aperture blades and the repair is still under warranty. The lens functions perfectly. I will offer the buyer the ability to return the lens within 10 days if not satisfied at their expense for refund of purchase price.

The DA 40mm offers amazing IQ in a small package. I have posted a couple samples taken with this lens below.

The price includes domestic shipping, and the lens comes with front and rear caps, a hood, and a pouch.

Simple softbox for Weddings

I can recommend the Photek Softlighter II. It creates a large, soft light source that can easily be powered by your Metz. The center shaft can be removed in case you don't have a lot of room to work with. Its also quite versatile, you can use it as a straight on umbrella or add the diffuser and turn it in to a soft box. It comes in 3 sizes: 36, 46, and 60 inches. As mrNewt mentioned you may need two of these if you want even lighting on a group of three or more people. I've had excellent results shooting group shots with two 46 inch Softlighters II in the past. Photek Umbrella - Softlighter II - 60" SL-6000 B&H Photo

I might add that if you are interested in the Softlighter II, I also recommend picking up a mini ball head so you can swivel the flash so that the head fit's inside the diffuser. While it's not absolutely necessary you may lose a little bit of light with the flash firing from the outside . Giottos MH 1004 Mini Ball Head MH1004-320 B&H Photo Video

I also recommend checking out Strobist. This is an awesome resource for flash photography and I'm sure they have a lot of great recommendations.

Samyang 85mm f/1.4 vs PENTAX smc 50mm f/1.8

What this decision comes down to is what type of portraits your looking to take. If your thinking of an outdoor portrait lens and want to have an extremely shallow DOF, go for the Rokinon. The large, dampened focus ring and a bright viewfinder makes manual focus fairly easy and consistent after a little bit of practice. However, if your thinking of mostly shooting indoors you may find 85mm on a cropped sensor to be too long for most spaces unless your going for just head and shoulder shots.

On the other hand, if your looking to shoot mostly inside or to take environmental portraits you would probably be better off with the shorter 50mm.

If your OK with manual focus and on a tight budget, I'd seriously consider buying both a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 and a Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7. Both are inexpensive and provide great image quality for the price.

As far as the focus confirmation goes, the indicator does help. But I've noticed that when shooting at an extremely shallow DOF such as f/1.4 or even f/1.7 there is a small amount of wiggle room where my K-X said that I was in focus. So I'd say to achieve correct focus wide open it takes using your eye as well. As boriscleto mentioned the catch-in-focus is another option, but I never used it much because it only works when the subject is in the center of your composition.

The first photo, the guy next to his motorcycle was shot @ ISO 400, f/1.4, 1/500 of a second. The bassist was shot @ ISO 800, f/2, 1/200th of a second. Both were mounted on my old K-X.

For it's low price, I think the Rokinon 85mm is one of the best deals out there. Yes, it's a manual focus lens, but the large focus ring makes this easier and usually when shooting portraits people aren't moving around too much. The only reason I'm selling is because I have changed camera systems and I can't afford to have unused lenses sitting around collecting dust.

New to Film: Advice for My Situation

Like Jamey777 mentioned, developing your own film at home is pretty easy, especially when it comes to B&W. You really don't need a lot of equipment. You could probably find a tank, reel, and a changing bag used on your local craigslist for next to nothing. Places like B&H sell the necessary chemistry if you don't have a good photo supply store nearby. Once developed scan the negatives at the college. As far as development goes, I don't think you can come out much cheaper than that.

And as PPPPPP42 said, you could consider bulk rolls of film. Essentially your just loading your own film canisters. Sometimes you can find expired B&W at discount prices and the film is perfectly fine.

Beyond whatever you decide to do with the zooms, I also recommend picking up an old 50mm prime lens. Like a Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 for example. While the 50mm is not my favorite focal length, it's a great, inexpensive way to enter the world of "fast" lenses.

Item for Sale
Sigma EF-610 DG Super flash for Pentax

Asking Price
135.00 USD

Item Location
Asheville, NC (United States)

Item Description
I have a Sigma EF-610 DG Super flash for Pentax up for sale. The Sigma DG Super is a powerful, lightweight flash that features a bounce and swivel head, P-TTL capability, and a built in slave if you want to use it off camera.

I bought this flash new from B&H about a year ago and it has seen about 4 months of use. There are some scratches on the rear LCD screen that can be seen in the attached photos, but otherwise the flash is in pretty good shape. I'd also like to make note that the menu buttons are sometimes sticky upon release after they're pushed in, but this has no affect whatsoever on the use or functionality of the flash.

The price includes domestic shipping, and the Sigma comes with a nylon pouch, a small hot-shoe stand, instructions, and the original box.
