VoiceOfReason, thanks so much, that is exactly the information I wanted to hear.

Thanks for the link. I knew it was a big lens, but I see now how big it is. I thought the 16-85 was biggish, but I think is probably much lighter.
My wife already complains about the weight of the camera when she's using it. I'm wishing I had tried one when I was at the camera shop a couple months ago, but the closest is a couple hours drive from here. I haven't tried the 35mm for stars yet as where I live you can only see two stars at night due to the light pollution. Thanks for your help

This may seem like a strange choice of lens to be deciding between, but please bear with me.

Obviously if I could afford it, I would buy both. But I can't.

I currently have a K3 - with a Pentax 16-85 (great lens). I also take my Pentax 10-17 fish-eye pretty much everywhere as I love the different perspective it gives.
I also have (but rarely take out of my bag) a Pentax 35mm f2, Pentax 50mm f1.4 and a Tamron 80-200 f2.8.

I want to take some starry night shots on an extended holiday and for general traveling.

I'm leaning towards the 18-35 as the f1.8 would be a big improvement on the 16-85 and the 8-16 is pretty much a non-fisheye version of what I've got in the 10-17.
But I've heard the 18-35 has trouble focusing and that is putting me off and the 8-16 does sound pretty good and would probably replace the 10-17.

If anyone else has tried these lens would love to hear your opinions.

thanks

Strange auto-ISO behavior with flash ?

Thanks for that tip, it's certainly helpful to know. However P mode still sets a slow enough shutter speed 1/20 to get some blur. It is better than green auto mode I would have to agree and I will use this from now on. Still seems strange to have a consumer based camera that shoots better in a mode other than auto.

You must have very steady hands to get a picture like that with a 5 second shutter speed.
My photos with the flash look like this.

Sorry but this is simply not true, when the flash is raised and the K-30 makes the shutter speed 1 second - you get plenty of blur, enough to make the image unusable.

Good to hear that it's not just me that thinks this is strange behaviour from the camera.
I came from a K-x and it has never done this (dramatically increase shutter time), so i can't understand why Pentax has changed it to a setting that clearly doesn't work.

When I'm in auto mode and pop the flash up, it immediately changes the shutter speed to anything from 1/25 all the way up to 1". (I am just taking a picture of my bookcase - 3m away and with nothing in the distance that needs exposing). This means that I end up with consistently blurry images.

Yes I can go into manual settings and force the camera into a reasonable shutter speed from between 1/60 – 1/180 and end up with perfectly usable images.

But it's pointless to say "I shouldn't use auto" or "that's what manual settings are for", because I'm presenting the camera with a best case scenario for using the flash and one that it should be able to handle with ease, without reverting to manual – especially when Pentax's previous cameras would take the picture with the correct settings.

I updated to a newer firmware 1.01 hoping that it would be fixed as I'm sure it's just a firmware issue. But it is still a problem.

I love the K-30 in every other area and this is the only problem I've encountered, I will live in hope that Pentax can sort the issue out in a future firmware release.

Built-in Flash ?

No, you have to raise it manually.
Look for the flashing flash indicator in the view finder, if it's flashing then it is suggesting you use the flash. Push the button on the side of the flash and when you take the shot the flash will fire. On the K-x in auto flash mode the flash would pop up automatically if the camera wanted to use it. On the K-30 you have to do that manually, which begs the question why have an auto flash mode that doesn't actually automatically use the flash?

If you have the flash raised and set to auto, the camera will only fire the flash if it thinks it needs to. Not sure why they have changed it, I preferred the way the K-x was setup even though I generally had it set to manual.
