Larger Zoom For K-50

I have the Tamron 70-300mm and later bought the DA*60-250 and there is no comparison. That is not to say that I didn't get any good photos out of the Tamron as I did. Had to work harder at it and be careful what f stop I used and then do a lot of post processing. The DA* is an amazing lens. It is heavy however and I am trying to decide whether or not to keep the Tamron for times when I need the reach but less weight, although I have yet to use the Tamron since getting the DA*.

K-30 advice

I have had my K 30 for just over a year now and love it. One of the deciding factors for me was the way it felt in my hands. I have large hands with long fingers and the K 30 fits them great. I don't have the Tamrom teleconverters but I have two Tamron lenses and they work great. I see no reason why if hey work with the K 10 they won't work at least as well with the K 30. Have a look around though there ave been some great Deals on the K 5ii and iis lately so never know what you might find. Good luck with your hunt. By the way, the K 30 is great at higher ISO's but then so are the 5's.

I did download K5iis 1600 it doesn't look like the one on his crop. The K5 doesn't look any better then the K3. Perhaps he downloaded a DNG for 1600 or a lower ISO jpeg in error. Besides, as I said I am more concerned/interested in the RAW files not jpeg from some engine I don't control.

I was using the DNG file for the K 3 and don't have one for any other camera. I went back and looked at the 5iis versus the K 3 Jpegs and no question that the detail is gone but they equally bad . . . possibly a slight edge to the K 5 bot not much. Both have severe degradation even at 800 ISO. Question really is, for me at least, if you get the DNG files of both and compare at various ISO settings and then post process in RAW converter how do the results compare then. That will tell me what I would be losing or gaining re low light/high ISO when I sue the cameras. Of course I want to see with the K 30 although the K 5ii and K 30 should be pretty close.

I downloaded the 12600 ISO DNG and did NR in RAW then opened in PS and used Neat Image to further NR. Here is a crop from that . . .I think it is not bad at all . . . thoughts?

The second image is 100% crop

The succeeding shots being dark may have more to do with how fast you are shooting versus the recovery time of the flash and yes there are instructions on the Metz website on how to update.

what flash

To be honest I can't remember which modes I used when in HSS. Probably Av or S or maybe P depending upon the situation. For regular flash work I almost always use P mode as that seems to get the most consistent results. As you may know Pentax works strangely with flash (search forum for threads on this) and can give erratic results especially when the flash is primary light source and I have found for indoor flash I get most consistent results in P mode and that applies as much to the on board flash as the Metz. With the Metz I almost always use bounce or have an omni flash cover on to give softer light so when bouncing etc I generally make a manual adjustment to flash output to get the exposure I want. It is a one time adjustment that works for the particular setting. When I have "set-up" time I will use Av or even Tav or manual and make adjustments to flash/camera to get the results I want. I just find with Pentax I have to work a little harder to get the right exposures in anything but P mode . . .and again that applies more to when the flash is the primary light source not when I am using it in fill mode as that and the Metz in HSS have worked well for me.

Very well done. While I still keep the ISO as low as possible while still getting the shutter speed and/or aperture I want I don't hesitate to go as high as needed to get the shot. Also great point about the texture and consistency of the noise from that sensor and how it can be desirable in certain types of photographs as in when trying to imitate old black and white or sepia images. Just another nice to have in the K 30.

AA battery holder or extra battery packs?

Just beware that standard AA cells won't cut it with the K 30. Need to get high end ones and even then may not get that many shots. Perhaps someone else has experience with a particular type of disposable AA and K 30. DO a search as there was a thread or tow on that.

AA battery holder or extra battery packs?

I have the AA battery holder and like it. For rechargeable batteries get Enerloop as regular rechargeable don't cut it in K 30 . . .too high a current drain. I had a couple sets of Enerloop "equivalents" and they just didn't cut it. I also bought a special charger to make sure each cell was individually monitored and charged to get the max out of the Enerloops. Now having said that, I did it because with other camera I have tried the knok off batteries and just didn't get the battery life or # of shots per charge that I got out of the Name brand original. Perhaps at $9.99 each it is worth a shot before nvesting in Enerloops and a special charger. Even with that I would get an AA holder just in case . . .

But most importanat to have it clean after changing the lens which means on start up should be the most effective.

Built in flash intensity levels

As someone has already suggested could be you are using a manual lens or could be the mode you use. I find that flash performance can be unpredictable in any other mode then P mode although I am most often now using an external flash but seems to me had same issue with the onboard flash. I would get unusually high ISO with shots using other modes resulting in overexposed shots. Try P mode when using flash.

K-30 Battery Life, what are you getting ??

The 100 shots was with a non Sanyo brand of supposed low current drain battery. I ended up buying a charger that individually monitors and charges each of four cells and that should maximize battery use.

No question that the battery charge indicator is challenged by the AA's. I did switch from letting the camera auto determine type of cell to Li ion and that helped some but the camera still fires on for quite some time after getting the red outlined battery indicator. It also drops to showing 1/2 to 2/3 charged pretty quickly. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that it is a firmware fix that is needed so hopefully that will come along sometime soon.

Thanks. I have just got my first set of Sanyo and only used twice but I have heard they do get better after a few uses. Regardless they are substantially better then the other low current drain batteries I have. The non Sanyo last for a long time in my Metz flash but not long (maybe 100 shots or less) in my K 30.

Help with auto pict vs scene modes

But Patrick, even if she is turning to scene mode she doesn't say she can't select a scene. And other then the ability to select the scene as opposed to letting the camera decide, scene and auto are the same.

Be nice if the OP checked in more frequently after asking for help.
