In my still on-going effort to find the right settings to use with my Vivitar 500mm Mirror Lens, I have read and tried the suggestions given to me by all of you out there. I did ditch the TC, and probably will never use it again. I shot this Image on a clear, cold, windy day. Using the AV Priority Mode, Tripod, and a Pixal Remote Shutter Release, this is what came out. Seems to be much better than what I had before, thanks to you all. I will keep playing with it! :)

Sorry about the dirt on the Lens. Must remember to watch out for that stuff.

Greetings, Miserere :)

I am sorry that it took me so long to respond to your comment about my 500mm Lens. The Holidays have a habit of taking up alot of my time, but anyway . . . .

I have read your response to my problem using my Vititar 500mm Lens. I decided to try these suggestions that you have made. Just yesterday, I took the Pentax out with my 500mm Lens attached to my tripod and set the dial to AV Priority Mode. The light was fading quite fast, since it was towards the evening of Christmas Day. I did have a Pixal Remote Shutter Release, then snapped this Image. I know that it's not really all that great, but I found that your suggestions seem to work much better. I'm thinking that I may have found the answer to my problem. :)

Using the AV Mode, I found that I could increase the Shutter compensation by +/- 2.0 using the thumb wheel on the right side. When I shot it at +2.0 it seem'd to work much better. The weather was not too good, but I thought that this would be an opportunity to find out just how well it would work. My ISO setting was 200. I have not had a chance to do this in Manual Mode quite yet, but will do so in the near future. :(

Granted that the weather was not great, I'm thinking that on a sunny day or a bit overcast, this Lens will work just fine. I also have purchased a 72mm Flower Lens Hood and 3 different Filters that came with it. Here, someone had suggested that I have one, so I thought why not. Lets see what happens. Can't hurt anything that I know of.

The AE-L button I am not sure just how to use it quite yet. There is a whole lot I have to learn with this Lens, so I'll be playing with it as time goes by. :(

Thanks for your help. It was appreciated, as always! :)

I've come across the pictures shown here using Mirror Lens. They are quite good. I, also, want to shoot a Vivitar 500mm Mirror Lens, but have had some limited results with it. I have a Pentax K100D, and just can't get the settings right. I've tried using different ISO speeds and found the it does work using a 400 ISO and a 800 ISO on Manual. The Pentax K100D has no "green button" that I can use. I've used a tripod, as always, and a remote shutter trip. I know that this Lens will work just fine, if only I could get Images like these. What settings did you use?

Landscape St. Nickoles Coal Breaker

I am quite a lover of snooping around old/abandoned or Historic places here in Pennsylvania. At times, it has gotten me thrown off Private Property, but that's because I never saw a sign.

This is the old St. Nickoles Coal Breaker that was once a major producer of coal. It used to employ around 500 miners refining the Coal that came here from deep in the Mines of Penna.

Now, it sits abandoned and not used any longer. Everyone is gone and the structure is falling apart. Lot's of old mining equipment lay's around rusting away into History, probably never to be used again.

Walking around this old place was sorta on the "creepy" side. Nothing was here except me and my camera. The weather was not too good. A light rain, and a bit of wind made the old structure somewhat noisy. The wind blowing thru the empty breaker, at times, made a "howling" sound that kept me constantly looking around and paying attention to what was there.

When "Coal Was King" here in PA, there were many of these "breakers" around the Coal Region Area. Most of them are now long gone, but there are still 1 or 2 left around that are not used anymore. I have other pictures of the area that I'll post later on.

This is my Vivitar 500mm Mirror Lens with a 2X Doubler attached to my Pentax K100D.

I found this Lens on Ebay and just could not pass up on the price. Have never used a Mirror Lens, so I thought that it would be a nice Lens to add to my camera gear. :hmm:

Since then I have taken this "out there" and tried to get used to using this Lens. So far, I'm not really happy with it. Since the AV Setting can't be changed from f/4, it makes no difference what kind of light there is around you. I have shot pictures in bright sun and still there is no change. Even tried using my PSPX4 Software to brighten them up, but have had limited result. It also came with 3 different filters that can be attached. The Filters really did not help at all. :(

If anyone out there has had better results with this type of Lens, please leave a comment. It would be greatly appreciated. I seem to like this Lens, but having a bit of trouble using it. Thanks ahead of time.

The Public Watershed Area known as Lake Ontellione is a nice place to visit with my Camera. It's full of photographic opportunity in any Season of the year. I'm over here a number of times during the year to see what Nature has to offer. There is always something. Nature never let's you down. All you have to do is look and appreciate what is around you.

Hello to all!

Like others here, I have decided to join all the other Pentax users out there. I shoot a Pentax K100D with 4 other different Lens's. I have always liked Pentax camera's and have used them for years. I started with a Pentax K1000 and since up-graded to my DSLR. The Pentax K100D does just about everything I need for Photography. I'm still learning all it can do. :)

Thanks for reading or commenting.
