Thank you PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP42,
I left it on a window ledge that receives sunlight with the battery compartment open and it's working again now.
However, it has twice in 10 frames randomly released the shutter. Strange.
Thanks again,

These photos demonstrate the beauty of nature and technology working in unison. #2 I like particularly.
If you don't mind my asking, how have you created a multiple exposure without the moving subject appearing faded and without the background/branch being overexposed?

Hello all,
I have a Super A that I've been using for around 6 months with the same batteries.
I was using it yesterday without a problem and then today when I went to take a photo, the battery was dead.
I got home I gave the cells a lick and it registered that there was a power supply for all of 5 seconds.
I proceeded to swap the SR44s for some LR44s I have in a P30t. To my dismay, the Super A didn't respond.
I then tested the SR44s in the P30t which confirmed that they had power.
Since working yesterday, the Super A hasn't received any knocks of been dropped.
Could one of you kind souls please enlighten me as to what could be at fault?
Thank you in advance,
Jay

wtlwdwgn,
I have Lightroom 5. Thank you for your suggestion, how would you suggest reducing the lens flare?
rbefly,
I think this is the crop you suggested. Contrast, clarity, noise and shadows all adjusted. I haven't had anything printed buying getting a new laptop so I have no idea how my screen is calibrated.
I will be venturing out again when my Sigma is back from being repaired.
I will look for a location closer to the south tower so as to bring the sun and bridge closer together.
Who was I kidding when I thought I was only going to have to get up at 5AM once to get the photograph I want :D

Canada-Rockies,
I should have mentioned that the second picture is the raw file from which I worked. You're right about cropping out the bow of the cruiser, nothing is lost there.
Parallax,
The lack of a subject in the centre does seem to be the problem. I think the problem is that this just isn't quite the photograph I had hoped it had been.
I attach another photograph which I feel has superior content, noting the incredible amount of surveillance in this city, however I find it difficult to like as I should have used a larger aperture.
Thank you both for your comments.

This is a photograph I took of the sunrise over Tower Bridge on my mum's birthday.
I want to have it printed and sent to her.
I don't feel that the composition is quite right. I'd like to stay with the 2:1 crop ratio as I already have a 12 x 6 picture frame.
All critiques welcome. The more scrutiny the better.
Thank you for looking.

I can tell you that from personal experience, the DA40xs provides a full frame image circle with no signs of vignetting.

Wow. The I never thought the differing connotations of the word 'gear' could have such drastic implications. To me, photography equipment put down as 'gear' is akin to calling it is 'bottom of the barrel'. I'm not sure if that idiom carries in American English. Apologies for explaining myself in doublespeak.
As for my response to you, I'm afraid you were the subject of a rage that has been boiling for the past week. I won't bore you with the details as I've already offended you with the emotion. The most I can offer you is a heartfelt apology for being so pedantic over the specified forum content and for my pretentious justification of why my camera was not 'gear' in my understanding of the word.
Thank you for responding to me as up until I read your second comment I was considering no longer contributing to this forum for fear of being shot down again when, in fact, I was never shot down in the first place.
I hope that if we ever fall into discourse again I will be able to convince you that my previous comment was out of character. Not entirely out of character, however, as I do occasionally use my keyboard as a verbal punching bag but only when provoked :p
Thank you for taking time to notice me in this vast forum and, again, I apologise for my impudent and inconsiderate response.

Nesster, your declarative is missing an object - 'to me'. To you this may be 'gear' but to someone in full time education - such as myself - who has no disposable income, a reasonably fast and threateningly sharp 24mm prime coupled to a two-tone bantam mf 135 body manipulating solar radiation onto a 36*24mm rectangle of traditional emulsion film engineered to develop sensual grain, that is 'camera porn'. Actually, to describe my camera as porn is derogatory.
To me, this is 'camera erotica'.
Furthermore, the 'READ ME' of the Pentax Film SLR Discussion states 'Only post about Pentax film SLRs in this section!' so you can take your Nikon and your Fujica and use them to inflate your damaged ego in some other forum.

Your response answers my question perfectly.
I now understand where my logic was flawed. I conceived that unexposed film already had and area determined to be the first frame. I didn't not realise that the first frame was developed at an undefined point to be determined by the camera's exposure counter.
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly, wombat2go.
Kind regards,
Jay

Hello all,
I have a question for anybody who sends negatives to a alb to be developed.
When sending a mail order for the development of a 36 exp roll of film, will that lab develop frames 0-35 or 1-36?
By my logic the answer would be 1-36, however in the Pentax P30t manual it states:
"Repeat making blank exposures until '0' appears in the exposure counter. The next frame is ready for the first shot."
Is the 'next frame' the one that will be exposed upon releasing the shutter i.e. '0' or the next frame to advance into position behind the shutter curtain after cranking the film winder?
I know I am over thinking this one.
Cheers 'n' gone,
Jay

weijen,
I agree with you that the MZ-5 is one of the nicer looking autofocus SLRs, however not being able to fully utilise K and M glass would deter me from purchasing one. I also read that it has a pentamirror viewfinder. I understand it would be a much larger viewfinder than the one on my digital KX - which also has a pentamirror viewfinder - but possibly just as dull compared to a pentamirror design. Thank you for convincing me that not all autofocus SLRs are ugly nonetheless.
wkarus,
I have read elsewhere of mirror slap issues regarding the Super A. Is this noticeable with handheld shots above 1/60? If so, this is a real cause for concern. I use a dSLR for tripod assisted night photography so if the camera shake is only noticeable with long exposures then this won't be an issue for me. Thanks for the heads up on the 1/125 issue and the mention of the MZ-5n. From what I read this uses an uncrippled mount and also has a pentaprism viewfinder. Everything wrong with the MX-5 righted :)
Fogel70,
The MZ-6 and the MZ-10 are both good suggestions and surprisingly cheap. I see they both use a pentamirror design viewfinder. Do you have any experience with these cameras regarding the pentamirror viewfinder. Is it noticeably duller than the equivalent pentaprism?
RKKS08,
I understand that with the Super A I would have to set the aperture indirectly through setting the shutter speed but this doesn't bother me. Interesting information on the textile/metallic shutter. I had no idea of this. Does this mean that any 35mm SLR after the ME/ME super would experience the same mirror slap?
Thank you all for your in depth replies. You have certainly given me some food for thought.

Just as oddly as this problem came about, it has gone.
Today I picked up the lens, turned the focus ring and it went to 5m. I rotated it to the minimum distance and back this time to 5m. A few more times and it would turn all the way to infinity.
I will still most probably clean out its insides when I have some time on my hands to prevent it from happening again out in the field.

Na Horuk,
From what I can see, the focus ring is not bent. What also make me think that this is not the problem is that the lens was working perfectly minutes before I noticed the fault. In the meantime, the camera had been in my bag and not received and knocks but something to check should it ever happen again.
pezmaker,
I would also describe my 'jam' to be more of a hang/stick as you stated. It now sticks at 3m which is, coincidentally, about an inch from infinity. Perhaps - hopefully - mine also has crud in the focus ring. Thank you for sharing your previous experience.
Just1MoreDave,
I think you should have your forum title changed to 'guru'. A filter can screw into the filter threads without a hint of a problem and the gap between barrel and ring does not change at different focus points. I will be taking the lens apart this weekend and will follow your instructions to the letter. I have seen somewhere else about resetting the focus and so that shouldn't be an issue.
Thank you all again. I would seriously state that one of the advantages to shooting Pentax is that you have access to possibly the most pleasant and best detailed forum on the internet.

Just1MoreDave,
What a wonderfully practical idea to try the combo on the last frame of another roll of film. Thank you very much. This is what I am going to do.
What lens were you stepping down with?
More importantly, what is an MX doing stowed in a drawer!?
wombat2go,
I really like this full frame tester you have come up with. Being born into the digital age of photography, it is easy to forget that the process of making a photograph is physically happening inside the camera body. For the moment I am going to use Just1MoreDave's idea of shooting the last frame of a roll of film but your contraption is great to know of for use with other DA lenses or lenses and step down rings.
Thanks to everyone for their hasty and well informed responses.
I'll let you know how it goes,
Jay

That is what I may have to do if nobody has had a similar experience from which they can recount. However, developing an entire roll of film only to discover that all frames show vignetting would cost me nearly as much as a 52mm filter and so is impractical.
I cannot test for vignetting on my dSLR as it has a crop sensor and so doesn't use the entire image circle of the film era full frame lens. There could be an intolerable amount of vignetting on full frame that would not show in the crop format.

Greetings to all that have not already declared me a fool from the title of this thread,
I feel as though I am disobeying one of photography's commandments: Thou shalt not use a step down ring on a wide angle lens.
Owning only Pentax primes, all of my filters are of a 49mm thread diameter. I have recently purchased a Sigma Super Wide II and want to use it for b&w work on film. To do so, I would be coupling it to a filter - if possible a 49mm filter.
I read recently of Nikonians using a 82-77 step down ring with the Sigma 20mm f1.8 on full frame -
geek7, 4th comment: Flickr: Discussing Using 77mm filters with step-down ring? in Sigma 20mm f1.8
As a percentage of the original thread diameter, the 82-77 stepdown is 6.1% whereas the 52-49 stepdown is 5.8%. Furthermore, in the case of the Nikonians, the lens in question was 4mm wider.
Might I be able to commit original sin and use a step down ring with a wide angle lens in 135 format?
Thank you for your time,
Jay

Thank you both for your ready responses.
I have only been keeping an eye on Super As for the past 2-4 weeks so it could just be that I have to pay my virtues in patience before being given the opportunity to buy one at a reasonable price.
Adam,
One of the reasons - which I should have noted - that I was considering the Super A DA40xs combo was for the humble dimensions of both components. Small enough, say, to fit in the inside pocket of a Levi's denim jacket while straddling a motorcycle. I now see that there are many Pentax SLRs under the 'Autofocus SLR' category offering Tv but, to me, autofocus SLRs are pig ugly. I am by no means somebody who considers a camera a fashion accessory, but I would be willing to pay the extra £$€ for a camera as handsome as a Super A.
weijen,
The same goes for the CP-7m. I doesn't look to be a pocketable camera - an interesting camera nonetheless. A quick look on eBay tells me I'd be able to get hold of one for £20 so, depending on the budget, it may yet be the answer as the UK today entered a triple dip recession -_-
Thanks again,
Jay

Calling all well informed camera creatures,
I have a Pentax M 50 1.7 that has recently developed a focusing problem. The focusing ring works perfectly from the minimum focusing distance of 0.45m up to 2m where it jamms.
I understand there is another thread detailing this exact problem, however a solution to the problem was not given.
Does anybody know how to get my most cared for lens back in working order?
Thank you for your time,
Jay

Hello all,
I have been toying with film photography for the past half year and enjoy it so much that I now do all serious b&w work on film. I currently own a DA 40 XS and would love to pair it to a roll of HP5+, however I am not able to do this with my P30t. I would like to acquire a Super A but after seeing several sell on eBay for triple figures I realise, due to my budget, I may have to consider another SLR that uses the renowned K mount and also offers shutter priority auto exposure.
All recommendations are welcome.
Thank you for your time,
Jay

Thank you all for your hasty and well informed responses. If I am to by a CPL, I will probably go with B+W unless the very thorough study Kozlok has referenced gives me reason to choose otherwise. With good glass coming at a good price I would buy a 49mm CPL as I would be able to use it on my M501.7 also. Obviously, doing this would mean getting a 27-49 step-up ring which would also have the advantage of allowing me to use a 49mm hood meaning I could reach inside the hood and adjust the CPL :)
I live in a seaside town in Cornwall and would be using the CPL to hopefully do justice to the local scenery: deep blue skies and seas with detailed granite rock faces which lose their majesty to haze incurred through distance. I don't intend to shoot orthodox landscapes, more so seaside photography with a human element.
Thank you all again,
Jay
