Op/Tech for the heavy lens for ten years now. I do closely watch the plastic connectors on shoulder strap, for any sign of impending failure….K3-3 leather strap stays in box for now…I have never hung any of my cameras from their straps.

But the Pentax of the past is gone. The world turns and does not stop for “what if”! I will never see a Pentax/ Ricoh 400 f2.8 autofocus because the people who keep Ricoh/ Pentax alive now will not pay for such a lens….As I have said many times, when my A*400f2.8 fails, I have to sell all and switch to something else…

With a fresh set of batteries installed , camera on, empty hot shoe, press up on pop up flash button,, mode in TV or M.. rear thumbwheel turned to the right, your flash sync should be 180 with half press on shutter release button. Both my 1ST DS and DL do this. They also show Sync speed of 80 on the other modes except B…with the kit 18-55 lens. Image exposure is normal. Are you seeing these numbers on your DL?

I shoot raw+jpeg 100 percent on my K3-111. My jpgs are factory default settings and 95% of the time nice images are the result. I use jpgs for my IPad and IPhone, (saves tons of space),raw for my big computer…I have no reason to even try to set the in camera jpg settings different, as there are so many variables that effect the images. I use Photos on the IOS devices and with one adjustment button , if I think it needs some help, I can get excellent images for web or small prints. Just something for thought.. My raw images on my IMac are better that the jpgs on IOS, You need to play around with jpg setting to see what results you get and learn if it’s worth the trouble. It’s not worth the trouble to me. As always ,others have different opinions but I have found that the lens is the most important thing for image quality, raw or jpg.

I was working in the garage when I spotted some tiny birds on my power line. A trip into the house for the 400 and my binoculars , a quick camera set up and then observing the birds with the binoculars reveled just what I had here. I could not tell what they were by eye, just too far away. I sat and waited having prefocused the 400 on the bird bath area and after about 10 minutes they came in. Had a ruby crowned kinglet show up today when working in the garage but was not ready and no images…I am making a mess in the garage right now, lots of dust ( upgrading my log splitter with side racks, travel stop, hour meter and filter guard, all metal cut and welded from scrap I had here, ) so no cameras out there . I’ll be ready tomorrow as all parts are painted and mounted….and I cleaned the garage with my blower…no dust/ metal shavings allowed in/ on the 400!

So much of the recent Ricoh/Pentax news is sadly lacking in clarity. Myself, I do not expect that to change but till my K3-3 Lcd issue is resolve I am looking more at Canon and Nikon.I have not yet changed my favorite camera brand. My A*400f 2.8 is one of my major lens usages, when coupled with the AF 1,7 adaptor. Manual focus for wildlife/ birds does not pay any bills these days.I do not see Ricoh producing a lens of this quality again. If they did I would buy one but sadly not many of Pentax recent customers would. The downside of backward combat ability. The sad thing is that this lens still produces superior image quality even today, better than any long Ricoh/Pentax lens for sale since then. I purchased it new in 1988.:My ex has the Canon 800 and the A*400 with the AF1.7 is a toss on image quality. But the 400 iis manual focus. It is up to Ricoh to now repair their products and retain customers. The K3-3 is a major step up for Pentax users, I can now get birds in fight with more than 3 frames in focus., but the K3 3 lcd lockup issue has not been addressed by Ricoh, At least not in any web sites I have seen,. which iis all you have to go by unless Ricoh releases
a company response.Software or firmware does not matter, fix it unless you do not want Pentax as a camera brand to continue…Yes I know some of the other camera brands have lock up issues, but that will not stop me from comparing them for future purchase…

The reset default for the eye sensor is on, off, medium, then everything functions as designed. Basically this lcd failure has many modes as this time after pressing the info button the lcd flashed 5 times then preview, live view, movie, info and menu failed to activate the lcd.

None of any suggested fixes have worked for me. Only a full reset fixes it till it decides to black out the rear screen again. It’s been 2 months since it did it last. Did it this morning when using the 150-450,:without the battery grip but with a fresh battery. Double tap the info button had the rear display flash off and on for 5 seconds and then off. Even live view and movie were blanked out and no image preview. Reset got everything back up again. The last update , I thought, fixed the issue but it did not.

Yes and no, we have someone’s opinion to that… ---------- Post added 09-30-21 at 08:12 PM ----------
My point is that all electronic suppliers have the same issue, about water intrusion. Somehow we need to get to a point about why it happens and how much the consumer is responsible, when the manufacturer states that their product is weather sealed…….which means
nothing or everything in an advertising world…

Yes… ---------- Post added 09-30-21 at 07:37 PM ----------
My main topic or point is that the manufacturer needs to supply customer satisfaction, hence my suggestion that Ricoh repair their flagship camera and warn their customer’s of future non warranty exceptions..sound’s simple enough…

Point well taken. Ricoh and all others, in my opinion, need to address the failure rates of modern electronics to moisture, and not expect a blanket exemption for water intrusion.. They too heavily advertise moisture, water sealing then want to back off when warranty is included. Personally I expect no water sealing on any camera or lens, except for my beloved Nikonos 5…
