I was out at a tulip farm today for the opening of the season and ran into a fellow Pentaxian. Second one in real life I've met since moving to Huntsville, AL last summer. I'm not sure what lens he was using, but he was rocking the K-1. We chatted for a bit and he told me he just purchased it in January. He was a Super ME user back in the day and wanted to get back into photography. To the guy I met, if you are on here, it is always nice to met other Pentaxians!

I’ve been to that Tulip farm. It’s a fun place to grab some photo’s. I actually live nearby. I moved to the Huntsville area in 2020. |

(Laughs). It was an expensive session, because we had to pay both for the model, a priest and her last meal.
I've got fingers crossed for one from this series when I send it off to a cheap artist on Fiverr for a composite.

That's a good idea - I had not thought about doing that. My goal is to try to duplicate, with digital, the kind of image "character" I got with my Pentax 67 in large(ish) prints. What I find so appealing about images taken with the 67 is not just the sharp details, but the beautiful, smooth transition of colors and tones from lighter to darker areas (hard to put into words, but you know that "look" when you see it). So that's what I'll be hoping to achieve with the K-1.

The used DA50 was only $69 plus $3.50 to ship to Connecticut, which I thought was a great deal. The broken DA 18-55 was his original version 1, from a *ist DL that he bought new, now dead. He uses it on a K-r and is perfectly happy. So I sent him my 18-55 version 1 from my old DS. It worked out as if I sold that lens for $40, after all the lost shipping costs. I should feel bad about that. :)

For the difference in price between my K-1 and the equivalent Nikon or Canon that are supposed to be better at video, I could buy a damn good video camera. But that's only if I wanted to do video.

The diagonal actually makes the photo more dynamic than if it were flat.

Terrific sunset with a bit of human interest. I can hear his outboard whining away, and the skiff bouncing on the waves. The shore has a lot of features in this sunset image, and the sun's disk is not seen. A very different effect from your previous sunset. Well done. Thanks.

That's definitely wall-worthy...I love the colour and particularly how uniform it is...it is almost monochrome.
I think I would be tempted to tame the noise a little. And if you're planning to put it up on the wall I would straighten the horizon, or it'll drive you nuts. :)

Beautiful colors and I really like the bird and its reflection! I don't know that you need to do much more processing with it in my opinion. It has a more artistic feel to it the way that it is.

Hah! And too be prived of the joy of thousands of failures, closed eyes, almost good light, a bit too flurry, I wish I had my 18/35/300mm with me, oh how much I hate this computer! ??? No way! :-D
Anyway, good luck on the job hunting, and congrats on the K-5 (and such an elegant and beautiful gesture!): we all know it's in very good hands!
Cheers!

The photography is okay to decent, but as I've said many times, it's impossible to judge the technical or optical quality of an image that has lord knows how much sharpening applied and is downsized 80% or more to fit a website's format.
Mocking people who want the best optics by saying look how wonderful my 800 pixel tall images that were taken by more mundane gear are just doesn't cut it, no matter how wonderful the 800 pixel tall images are.
When I was comparing images taken with the FA50/1.4 to those taken with the D FA* 50/1.4 it was very apparent at the pixel level that the D FA blew the FA lens away in every conceivable metric at every aperture, but when those images were downsized to a few hundred pixels across, there wasn't much to say between them. Downsizing kills detail, and detail is where technical quality resides.
For someone who only displays images at small resolutions on the internet, a multi coated coke bottle might be sufficient. I blew identical images from both the FA and D FA 50s up to 12x18 inch prints and could very easily see, even from a longish viewing distance that the new lens was far superior to the old one.
Saying that better equipment won't improve someone's photography might be true if one isn't especially concerned about technical quality, especially if they end up processing images through crude instagram style filters, but there are a lot of photographers for whom technical quality of the image is an important part of their esthetic.
There are reasons why back in the film days, for example, people humped view cameras and sheet film into the field, there are reasons why people shoot with large sensor cameras rather than cell phones.

I think the OP is going on Peter Hurleys version of good which is model interaction. He has it down and can repeat it. That's great. Shoot formula and repeat. It's hard to get but great.
I looked at the 500pix. Looked at one and said yep same pic.great for the pic. Well done. What does the next pic give me? The same or tell me different. That's not bad but why look beyond?
Leroyes has every picture unique.

My photography sucks...…. My gear sucks.....My Images suck.....My creativity sucks.....My ability sucks...…..Im Doomed......Pentax is doomed....we are all doomed...….except for the free K-1II that this post count goes to.....oh wait....now that doesn't count either does it ? Gee Thanks , and to think I had such high hopes...!
Thank god someone straightened me out and showed me the light. Its all pointless....completely pointless.
Its raining here so off I go to take pics of a nice freshly squashed Toad on the road without a flash......and then I definitely need a BEER or 5 !
I almost forgot ! Will be using my beater K-r and my super expensive DA 18-55 WR lens....that way I will get the best image possible !
Its all about the Beer according to Homer Simpson.
Now this should clear everything up for everyone.

best thing about the OP's post
it, and the 4 pages and the responses to it ( so far ) has helped build the post count toward the 45,000 number we need for the free K 1 contest this month
IMHO, YMMV

I just have to like the photo.

In fact, technically speaking, with better equipment the photos are better. Funny is you come here to criticize others for enjoying photography the way they like. Sad is, even if you make "better" photos, that doesn't make you a better artist or a better human being.

I'd say the vast majority of people here are in that first group, Yuri. Some have basic equipment, others more advanced. Whatever works for them.
Those that have only very basic skills are still free to buy whatever equipment they like, including a Phase One medium format if they so wish. Good luck to them. At the very worst, they have equipment that they enjoy using. But over time, I'd guess most will develop some skills (especially since they've invested a lot of money in their equipment), and have a lot of enjoyment doing so.
As for models, not everyone likes shooting models. Not everyone lives near, or can easily travel, to beautiful destinations. Some folks make use of what they have near by for their photographic subjects. It's all good.
One great thing about this hobby of ours is that it's not some big competition to see who's the best photographer. We're all free to enjoy it as we see fit, and every single person's approach is equally valid :)

It's not that better camera or lens will make me better photographer, just like better brush will not make someone better painter.
But camera is tool, and better tools can make live easier, and sometimes makes something possible at all.
I'm mostly into wildlife. Camera with better AF, higher usable ISO or faster lens allows me to make more good photos. Skarper lens will let me make sharper images. But you still have to know where to go, how and what to photography and how not to scare all animals before you make any picture, and no camera will give you that knowledge. And no matter what camera will you give me, i will not make great portraits (maybe sometimes by accident), because i just have no experience in this and i don't feel it.
So better hardware can let you make better pictures, but only if you know how to use it. Ofcourse good photographer with smartphone will make much better picture, than complete amator with latest camera, but good photograher with good camera can (but not always will) make better pictuere, than same photographer with bad camera.
And if someone says camera does not matter at all, go and shoot sport or wildlife with collodion. And bring me at least few usable pictures from your mountains trip or from some rally :)
