Nippon Camera Ricoh/Pentax 2019 Interview

WOW, they will listen to user requirements and not be swayed by users .......Basically they will make cameras THEY want and not their customers want and need. Whereas the big three are largely listening to their customers and producing cameras and lenses based on customer requirements.

If Ricoh Pentax has missed it, we are already well behind in autofocus in dslr's. Mirrorless has just leaped ahead of dslr in af performance with eye auto focus with ridiculous keeper rates (close to 100%) ............

Ricoh Pentax REALLY needs to wake up.

Even if Pentax makes an apsc camera at or close to the D500 af performance, mirrorless is already out of reach with eye auto focus and continuous af.

Pentax is behind by two generations in af against canikon, and canikon mirrorless is two generations behind Sony and one gen behind Fuji af.

HELLO RICOH PENTAX .......MIRRORLESS NOT A TREND OR A FAD ANYMORE, ITS THE MARKET LEADER IN CERTAIN MARKETS!

Here in Australia Pentax has disappeared from most camera stores ..............what about that trend? Even then city stores have even smaller Pentax sections now - they've gone form small to smaller shelf space...........

Mirrorless is killing dslr period, and Pentax is looking likely the first to go on the scrap heap.

Ricoh's comments here at the 100 year anniversary are simply pathetic. I'm no economist, but the market is shifting and surging ahead and Pentax is simply NOT being wise in their business decisions to not jump into mirrorless.

Look they need to go mirrorless apsc in the next two years and make a few generational leaps in af performance.

What maximum ISO to use on K-70 default auto ISO range?

I just set my K-3 to the highest it goes. When you set a limit, the camera won't shoot, and that annoys me. I'd rather it take a grainy picture than appear to be jammed up. Because then I get confused as to why its not firing, then I start hunting around in settings to see what I've done wrong. I'd rather see the picture pop up on the back of the screen for 3 or 5 seconds, and go yep, that looks yuck, and then adjust another parameter.

When I bought my first dslr (nikon) a friend told me to do just that, and not shoot above ISO 1600, the camera wouldn't take the picture, and I was confused. I do this even on my Fuji camera and max out the ISO so's that it always shoots. Unfortunately in Fuji the base ISO is 200, and when you broaden the ISO range it then starts at ISO 400 ....which is whats stupid about my fuji cameras.

Dear Pentax,

I own a Pentax K-3 and many many Pentax lenses. I would like a Pentax Mirrorless camera also, however, I am not a big fan of the Pentax K-01.

Due to the fact that Pentax does not offer a Mirrorless APSC camera, I have also purchased a Fujifilm camera. However, I do not like the image quality, and much prefer the Pentax Prime engine, and white balance. The lenses with Fujifilm are very good.

I would like to someday see Pentax offer a mirrorless camera, which will have its own new mount with an 8mm flange distance, to keep the dimensions small, and allow for some third party lens options.
A K-mount adapter with built in focus motor would be a must have so it can use current K-mount lenses.
New lenses, trinity zooms: 10-20, 16-50, 50-200 or 300. A few primes 16mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 (this is asking alot). Gun metal grey in color.
Distance scales on the lenses (linear motor driven lenses forgo distance scales typically).
An EVF or Hybrid EVF/Optical Viewfinder.
5 frames per second plus, preferably 10fps and a huge buffer.
On sensor phase detect autofocus. Autofocus speed must meet Sony A6000 speed.
Between 200-400 autofocus points.
Shake Reduction IBIS 4.5stops, and Pixel Shift.
Electronic shutter up to 32000th of a second.
Decent video 1080p up to 60fps with the old K-5 electronic-digital shake reduction (4k maybe down the track).
Battery grip to extend battery life only, no boost modes.
A popup flash that tilts up for some bounce flash.

Design: Make it look like it was a prop from Star Wars - something futuristic, purposeful and modern. White and gunmetal grey colors. Don't copy the Sony A7 or Fujifilm boxiness. Canon's M5 looks okay and modern, so I think a modern style would suit. If you want to go retro then go silver top and bottom plate with black leather - it could work well.

I personally like the K-S1 look with rear dial setup ...... A K-S1 without mirror and flange distance, and pentaprism, instead with EVF and new lens mount. The body was slippery, and the perforated leather from the K-30 would have been suitable on the grip to prevent slipping.

(Forum Members can add to any other features they see necessary which I might have missed)

Dude, face facts the Marc Newson design was disgusting. He was trying to blend it with 1920's art deco design.

But lets not forget that the design brief was that the camera had to be able to stand up on its base and on its side with the little 40mm 2.8 attached.

There's Marc doing art deco on a leica .......looks like a toaster crossed between a washing machine ........or thats the love child of a 1920's art deco toaster and washing machine.

The SD Quattro looks like a camera, it has presence, it looks cool and it looks purposeful. Yes its an OVERSIZED camera, where mirrorless is supposed to be small. The lack of a new mount shows that Sigma is not interested in pursuing 8mm filangee lenses ....... they have a few of them. But the camera has been reviewed and its crap and another Sigma orphan ....nobody is gonna touch it, its useless.

If you said that you wanted a motorbike, and your wife surprises you by buying one ........ how would you feel if she surprised you with a little Vespa scooter. You're dreaming of a Yamasuzukasaki that does 350kph, and not a retro designed 1920's art deco Vespa. Vespa's aren't motor bikes (No offence to the Vespa biker gangs of London).

K3 is a camera. K01 is a Scooter.

K02 should be a camera.

Hows about if we made the Pentax K-02 Fan club !

If we don't yak on about it like FF complainants, Pentax will never make one.

The tide of Mirrorless is turning quite rapidly. Sony already has a FF mirrorless, Fujifilm is blossoming, and if they up the mega pixels to 24mp, they'll be even more attractive. Canon has improved the EOS-M. Nikon has the 1 ........

Where's Pentax ? I'm sure they're too busy working on the FF. But once its out, we better get on Pentaxes back for the K-02.

Who's up for a Pentax K-02 ?

If this forum or other Pentax forums were irrelevant, then why did Beholder put up a whole bunch of quotes from the forum members who obtain insider information about whats coming from Pentax. If the forum were irrelevant then these two wouldn't bother with the biggest internet forum for Pentax.

The bottom line is that we live in a digital age. As soon as a product is released it gets reviewed by online sources and immediately there be customer feedback. Look at the Canon 5Div debacle. Online its been a flop, and if Canon isn't paying attention to the forums and youtube, then they would be off their rocker.

---------- Post added 09-23-16 at 06:20 PM ----------

Pentax has their people on this site and they disseminate information about upcoming products - isn't that the premise of this thread. This forum does discuss the things which Pentaxians are after. There was a massive calling from this forum for a full frame camera - I mean you would have to be deaf if you didn't see that outcry for years. So .........The "Loud Brats" kept complaining and complaining and asking Adam and the others to ask Pentax whether they were making a full frame camera.

If Adam organized things and did some surveys periodically, the forum could channel this energy and he could deliver to the Pentax bigwigs what Pentaxians are after in the future interviews.

Primes and AF has been a large issue on this forum and in the youtube reviews, and it appears Pentax is listening and are working on improving those aspects - based on the quotes you yourself have posted.

---------- Post added 09-23-16 at 06:24 PM ----------

Adam or some other dudes from this forum have interviewed the chiefs at Pentax in the past and have conveyed that Pentax users want a full frame. This IS the Pentax users forum - this is the BEST place to see customer feedback on products. Do you think that Pentax marketing - if it even exists - walks around the streets of Tokyo interviewing complete strangers who may or may not be a camera user. Pentax will talk to its photographers and its customer base.

---------- Post added 09-23-16 at 06:30 PM ----------

Now this is just arguing for the sake of arguing.

It is well established that Canikon have listened to its users. This is the cyber age, and camera users congregate in cyber space, and market research can simply sit on their butts in an office and get an idea about the product feedback.

When someone opens a restaurant, the first place they have to keep an eye on is the internet sites where people review and post comments on restaurants. Some folks even go to such an extent as to create fake profiles and post bogus positive comments about their own restaurant.

Dude, this is the cyber age.

---------- Post added 09-23-16 at 06:34 PM ----------

I currently work, but If I were to run a business, and a business that could improve its exposure on the internet, I would. If I could take a peek at any forum that discussed my products or services, I would periodically research whether there was positive or negative cyber-chat. People pick up their phones and search for a restaurant and see what others think of it .......its pretty common nowadays.

---------- Post added 09-23-16 at 06:39 PM ----------

Yeah you're like me - the glass is half full kinda guy. As opposed to the - glass is half empty ......"ain't nothing going on here in this forum its a waste of time nobody from Pentax cares about Pentax Forums ........except when Pentax Forums goes to photokina or CP+ and interviews the CEO or Vice whatever of product development. Yeah pentax Forums is irrelevant.

---------- Post added 09-23-16 at 06:45 PM ----------

They go to the product reviews - lets say the DA* 16-50mm 2.8 - and look at what people say about the lens. They take a note pad and jot down the users positive comments and negative comments. The main issue with that lens is the SDM which is apparently addressed. Next issue is the purple fringing - quality control.

Note Pad says: Fix the SDM motor. Improve quality control during element manufacturing, and improve testing the final product for defects.

You do not need the super computer "Deep Blue" and a team of programmers to develop an algorithm that scans Pentax forums or other forums to analyse Pentaxians. Just a notepad and pen.

---------- Post added 09-23-16 at 06:51 PM ----------

Typically fertilizer companies are engaged in a dialogue with their farmer customers, and deliver products specific to various regions where soils have certain deficiencies. Same thing with crops with new hybrids - they actually collaborate with farmers. If you've ever driven past a corn field sometimes they'll have the specific breeds with signs posted from the manufacturer of the breeds.

DXO (and Photozone) is a load of bolony. Other lens testers show different results. That DA* 55mm 1.4 is a lot better then what DXO is saying, and in fact they are over stating Canon and Nikon Lens resolution.

To me the DXO lens thingo is a web widget. If a brand new lens comes out for Pentax, they don't literally re-test it on every old Pentax camera body. If a new camera body comes out, DXO isn't going to literally re-test every single lens on that body to see the perceptual pixels. For Pentax there'd be 20-30, Canon there's maybe 80 plus, Nikon maybe 80 plus. DXO is pretending that this is what they do to get the perceptual mega pixels. They're not going to do that for every new camera and lens. They make a website widget, make it biased in favor of Canon and Nikon ........budda bing budda boom, every big shot pro photographer refers to it thinking that its valid information when its a huge stinking pile of poop.

For crying out loud, DXO lens perceptual mega pixel widget is a widget and unscientific. DXO is a joke, and I can't believe so many youtubers refer to this crappy widget - perceptual mega pixels ! Who uses this term .......nobody but DXO.

Your equipment is as you have stated:

Feedback: 7D is pretty good, but images typically have flat colors, AF is legendary. 5Diii is very good, has 16 bit images and can look a little too busy and digitized. In general, Canon is real good, but images in APS-C look digitized and colorless, and entry level FF can look too busy and digitized. Many Canon lenses are legendary, and very highly priced. GX7 is a legend of 4k video, and its getting challenged by Sony and it could be de-crowned, we'll have to wait and see.

Tips: Seeing how you have a K-1 on pre-order, you should try it out and see if you like it. Maybe you'll hate it and send it back, or love it and keep it and get rid of your Canon gear and go all in with Pentax ........

Jokes: No jokes, you weren't kidding around when you bought your cameras, and we weren't kidding around when we bought our Pentax's. I'm partially in with Fujifilm, and enjoy it but the IQ falls down for landscapes, but portraits are great. Every camera brand has its strengths and weaknesses.

Losing my religion

Losing my religion ........... thats funny, but it's exactly like that over in canikon land ....... a religion. I was worshiping at the temple of Nikon for a time, until I started looking around at what the other manufacturers had on offer. Better value for money I thought with Sony, yeah great little camera, and so much better than equivalent Nikons and Canons. I continued to research and was utterly blown away by the K-5's image quality and 3D effect and I bought one, low and behold i sold the 24mp Sony in favor of the 16mp K-5 but despite losing 8 mp's, the images were so much better. Pentax was the only brand I went all in on, based in the quality of rendering from Pentax Prime's processing.

Pentax is not a religion ..... it can be if you want it to be, but its not a good idea, because they're only cameras .......... its about being practical. Its about having a few tricks up your sleeve like astrotracer, IBIS, actual rain resistance with DA*, and now Pixel shift.

There's a guy on youtube called Ed at "Photouniverse" and he uses Pentax and a few other brands. He made some videos when he switched back to Canon with a 6D, then after he got a K-3ii and saw pixel shift beat his 6D on sharpness for his landscapes, he went back to Pentax. Then he switched to Fuji X-pro2, then that was no good, then X-pro 1, and now its a matter of waiting till he gets a K-1. He's a good guy, with some good advice.

The "Camera Store" has a review on the K-1 now with a dude that shoots the 645Z. They seemed to think the K-1 with the pixel shift does come close to the 645Z, and that the dynamic range of the k-1 was really close too.

Considering that the K-3ii on pixel shift with a cheapo Tamron 17-50 can beat the 6D with L glass, I think the K-1 will comprehensively out sharpen and dynamic range a 6D, and challenge a 5Dsr......... for much less loot !

All in all, I think you'll be real happy with Pentax, because of no AA filters messing up your sharpness. The color accuracy of Pentax's Prime image processing is similar to Canon full frame, only I feel that Prime is more organic looking, and its "What you see is what you get", where as Canon's Digic looks a little digitized in the 5D and APS-C range. Pentax has got some real sharp lenses so I doubt that you'll be disappointed.

Good luck with your decision.

Pentax K-1 Officially Announced

So the K-1 is on B&H for $1796.95USD, and the Nikon D750 on B&H is $1996.95USD.

Then in Australia the Pentax K-1 has started out at $3188AUD, next to the Nikon D810 retail price of $3191AUD.

Then Pentax/Ricoh Australia dropped the price to $2899AUD, and the Nikon D750 retails for $2297AUD in Australia.

Can someone explain why a Pentax K-1 is cheaper than a Nikon D750 in the US, but in Australia the K-1 is $602 more expensive than a Nikon D750.

Please don't answer by implying that I'm poor and can't afford one, or there's the pre-order price versus the retail price yadda yadda yadda. Or the US market is the premier market with millions of people in it, the Euro zone is similar in size, and the Asian market might be too.

(Its not a trick question, what I think is the answer will be written below)

I actually had no interest in getting a K-1, and have been really happy with my K-3. When I saw the US price I was expecting something similar here in Australia, and I thought maybe I'll give it a go. But no, they jacked up the price into the clouds here in Australia.

Its funny how everyone was ticked off how Pentax never released a full frame camera etc etc. They were ticked off how they haven't got an upgrade path, and some of them were really outraged at that, and shook their fists at Pentax.

The full frame is here, and I might be one of the first to be shaking my fist at Pentax Australia. I mean really, I never thought I'd use this expression, but Pentax is really doomed here in Australia. At least Pentax USA has given customers a real good incentive to buy a K-1 over a D750, and Pentax might gain a real foot hold in the US. But in Australia, there's no chance ....... the cameras are gone from the shelves, and most camera stores can't even be bothered to stock Pentax.

The only piece of advertising I've seen from Pentax was an infotainment commercial for the Pentax K-50 a few weeks ago. I sat there and watched the whole half hour of it for fun. I was actually excited to see Pentax advertised on TV ! I'm guessing that CRK was over-stocked on K- 50's, (I think they sold 3 during the commercial). Normally Nikon does the infotainment on that channel.

The question again: Why is the K-1 $602AUD more expensive than a Nikon D750 in Australia, while in the US, the K-1 is cheaper than a Nikon D750 ?

(Answer = Rip-off)

Pentax is Doomed ! (now I'M one of those "Pentax is doomed" caption writers)

Hey whats up ! I've owned a Sony SLT with electronic viewfinder circa 2011. I never had a problem with the viewfinder making me motion sick ...... and to be quite honest, I think its a load of bollony.

I have also heard about Fujifilm viewfinders making people sick also, but I don't believe it anymore.

I think these folks were already sick, and then believe the camera made them sick because it didn't have canikon on it ! Maybe they drank a bad latte or had some bad sushi. Then they go to the liquor store and buy some cheap whiskey, go home and get drunk.

I get eye strain using an SLR, and sore arms and sore back too ....... what, am I gonna sell all my gear and quit photography, then take up breeding labradoodles ? Am I gonna quit playing xbox for fear of photo-induced epileptic seizures ?

What do they say about mirrorless users, that they're hipsters ? I think if an electronic viewfinder gives you a grumbly tummy .......... you're not "......" (something) enough !

AF performance 16-85 vs 18-135 vs screw drive on K3?

I thought I might add .....

You've already got a really good lens in the Sigma 70-70. If you want the Pentax 16-85mm, it is a pretty good lens, just its weaker on the long end. The 18-135mm is also weaker on the short end and long end - I think its at its best between 24-70mm. Also, you're going to a smaller aperture. So those are the compromises. You cannot escape the fact that having a tourist lens, has its drawbacks, and for optimum performance you need 2 lenses 16-50mm f/2.8 and 50-135mm f/2.8.

Having the 17-70, shows you want a premium wide aperture lens, so going backwards might work or it might not.

You're planning a trip to Asia, and are concerned about water and fungus. If it suits you to buy one of the tourist lenses, just go to a shop and try it out, and maybe you'll like it.

When I go overseas, the first lens I bring is my wide angle Pentax DA 12-24mm - its brilliant. Its not weather sealed, so I keep it stored in a ziplock plastic sandwich bag with a couple of sachets of moisture absorbers. I'd bring your Sigma 8-16mm on your trip. I think your next lens should be the 16-50mm 2.8 which is weather proofed (not just WR) - its not perfect but it is fantastic. The trick with SDM is that you should not turn the focus ring while you press to auto focus, because this acts against the motor and causes it to either seize of fail. Pentax and Tokina made this lens together, and in the Tokina iteration, they do not have quick shift, the focus ring must be pulled forward or backward for manual or auto focus. The Pentax DA* 50-135mm 2.8 is even better than the 16-50mm 2.8 and a gem that blows my mind every time I use it. If I go overseas: 10-17mm, 12-24mm, 16-50mm, 50-135mm ....... I'm lugging the good stuff, because there's no point in compromising - if you are in to photography. If its just a bit of fun, and you're happy with average images, get the average lens. If you want great images get the great lenses.

I have luckily scored a nice 400mm lens a few weeks back, and I would like to use this for astrophotography soon.

I do not have the GPS unit for Pentax yet, nor an equatorial mount, and I was wondering which would be better with this 400mm lens ? Or are then any drawbacks to using a Sigma 400mm f/5.6 tele macro for astrophotography ?

If you have any experience with this lens for this task, I'd like to hear of your experience.

If you know of any good links to sources for using the Pentax GPS, like turorials etc that could really help.

Thanks in advance !

Hi Timmy, welcome to the forum !

I'm sure you'll get loads of helpful information from this forum !

You can make photography as simple or as complicated as you want.

Once you're done with the automatic modes, you might try the aperture priority, shutter priority and manual mode. But trust me, Pentax controls make it so easy.

Aperture priority is my favorite, its just fun playing with depth of field and getting that 3D effect happening. I wouldn't worry about photoshop for a long while yet, just master your lens and camera.

Good luck, and never put yourself down by saying your questions will be dumb, you're a smart guy, you bought a Pentax ! People here are more than willing to help out a beginner.

If this new K-3ii rumor is true, then I'm pretty ticked off. Thats a huge upgrade, 4.5 stops, pixel shifting, built in astrotracer. My K-3 is the fancy "Prestige" model and its only 6 months old and I'm still getting to know it. These are upgrades I would really like.

If it comes out, I'll be biding my time and saving up for a year, then I'll buy it, then 6 months later there'll be something new and with even more features, that I'll want.

I'm just gonna work on sorting out my lens collection and enjoying my K-3 for as long as I can hold out for. Maybe I should have bought a D7100, the D7200 got a few decals and wifi for its upgrade, everyone was like: "What, is that it ? Whats the point?"

Looks like Pentax really wants to be top dog in APSC dslr's.

The 16 mega pixel tests for the D7000 and K-5 are bogus. Resolution values for lenses tested on the D7000 are overstated, and mathematically impossible, as far as I'm concerned ......... and, seeing how the K-5 has a much lighter AA filter to the D7000. I cataloged every lens tested on that site a few years ago for fun, and there are a tonne of anomalies which I put down to photozone fudging the numbers, and this is one of the biggest anomalies. I nowadays don't even bother looking to that site. Some of Photozones tests do not concure with other lens reviewers. Perhaps in the beginning they were honest, then later things changed and they started fudging figures. Probably advertising revenue.

I tend to use Ephotozine and Lenstip now, photozone is a joke.

Ephotozines tests of the DA*16-50 2.8 are bang-on with my 16-50. Plus other lenses I have.

I just hope this new 18-50mm in the HD variant will be sharper. Its usually a matter of you get what you paid for with lenses. The SMC version being effectively $100 in the kit, and the HD version more than double that. There are times I don't want to lug around the 16-50, and want something a lot more compact, portable and discrete, and I'm NOW hoping the HD version will be the one.

Come on Pentax, give us something to get excited about ! (Yeah I know the 645Z and K-S2 won TIPA)

I remember positive reviewers of the K-5 saying: "its a pity its not a FF". My feeling was that Pentax should just jam in a 35mm sensor into a K-3 - and budda-bing-budda-boom, whoomp-there-it-is ! .............

I mean thats all they really need to do, and most folks will be happy !

Look at Nikon, they just jam in any old junk into their cameras, they don't care if its spraying oil all over the place ! Who cares, people gonna buy it anyhow ! I mean how many models do they have with an oil leak ! Nobody cares, Nikon sales are roaring.

Yeah Canon 6D, its got one AF point thats cross type - who cares ! People gonna buy it anyhow !

Yeah the K-3, its a great platform now - just jam that 35mm sucker in there ! People gonna buy it ! including me !

The real issue is establishing a better lens lineup, creating Mark II versions of lenses with improved SDM and no more purple fringing. Hopefully they give the full lineup the HD treatment - but this is a whole other topic.

K5 vs K30 vs nikon d5200

Image quality of the K-5 and the K-30 are far better than the D5200. The K-5 is probably the closest you will get to "film quality" in a digital camera, and everything else just looks digital next to it. The K-5's image quality is up there with the $7000 full frames, but naturally not as good in low light being a crop sensor. What good is 24 mega pixels if the camera's processing software cannot render properly, this will also be seen in video. The D5200 does have up to 60fps, and to me this is the only really and tangible advantage the D5200 has over the K-30's 30fps or K-5's 25fps. But its not worth sacrificing image quality over video fps because you buy an SLR for the pictures 1st, the video capability is just a bonus. Video is a beast in itself and is far better performed on a tripod using manual focus, because the design of an SLR is not conducive for handheld video as opposed to a camcorder. As for an articulated screen, they come in handy from time to time but you can get by without one. Most pro cameras don't have articulated screens and pro's get by no problem.

Having more pixels is nice, but you will find that the K-30 has a very light anti-aliasing filter as can be seen when comparing "Still life at ISO 100" at "Imaging Resources" (you need to click on the image to view it properly). That D5200 image is blurrier than the K-30 and will negate some of those pixels. Plus if you take a look at the right of the image you will see a white wheel called "Proportional Scale". This wheel looks whiter with the Pentax cameras, and is very beige with the D5200. This means that the baseline white balance is wrong on the D5200, and by a long shot. They do this to make your images look more warmer, and in turn your colors will be untrue, and using your D5200 under artificial light will be even worse.

What ever rating the "supposed" independent online reviewers give, you need to add 5 extra points for Pentax's sensor stabilization, because it works better. Plus a further 5 points because you can use wide angle and prime lenses with stabilization. If you get a D5200 you need to switch the VR off when you're not shooting otherwise it remains on and wares out quickly, which can be fiddly. With Pentax, Sensor stabilization turns on and off automatically when you aren't shooting.

If you compare Pentax and Nikon lenses we all know that Nikon has a larger range, but nobody will literally buy the entire range, just a few lenses from diferent categories. What Pentax has in spades is high quality primes, Nikons primes are generally well behind in sharpness and quality, thats because Nikon are more about VR zooms (Compare them at Photozone.de 10mp vs 10mp).

http://www.photozone.de/reviews

Regarding focus points, 39 vs 11, more is better, but it is unlikely that you will use all of them in either camera, unless you are shooting sports. For that the Nikon will be better, but judging from all the internet chatter about "How to use 39 points" there seems to be a lot of confusion and difficulty for sports because the technology is not perfect. Sport photography is a whole other story with a high degree of difficulty. Like me, you will probably be using a single focus point for almost 100% of the time, because its too fiddly using multiple focus points.

In a nutshell, Pentax cameras are more of a fine art range of cameras and lenses and you shouldn't have trouble using them for sports. Nikon and Canon are more sports, wedding and journalist oriented camera manufacturers and are very successful. Sony went off on a different tangent and rewrote the concept of the traditional SLR and gave it a modern twist and they were successful.

Pentax - Fine art
Nikon - sports and weddings
Canon - sports and weddings
Sony - high tech.

Hi and welcome Omelyjane !

Oh you've definitely made a very good choice, and one day if you get some more lenses like portrait lenses, they will have shake reduction because of Pentax's sensor shift. Plus your image quality is far better with more natural and vibrant colors and contrast.

Do not panic ! I too was overwhelmed when I first bought a DSLR (a nikon), and it too had a huge manual. But photography is fairly simple and you do not need to worry. But you do need to read the manual at least once, but at the same time, you should have a notebook and take a few notes for your settings like: How you want to save your images, fine or RAW or JPEG; Horizon correction to level the sensor when shooting handheld; expanded ISO settings.

At first, all of this stuff seems really confusing and foreign, but in time you'll get the nack. The simplest way is to put it in Aperture mode and play with the depth of field.

Good luck and don't be shy to ask those questions.

(Edit - Knowing somebody who already has some experience with DSLR's is very handy, and they can also help you get started and familiarize you with the settings. Plus how to approach capturing images. The buddy system ! )

I wouldn't worry about Lightroom for now especially in the beginning.

Like I said before just read your manual, and take a few notes about which settings you like (Like if you want to disable the flash, or use it for fill-in flash). Later, these notes can be turned into a flip card for when you forget how things work, and believe me, in the beginning you do tend to forget. Thats because all that information and all the settings are too much at first !

In the beginning people usually use the program mode, and select: Portrait, Landscape, macro, sports etc etc. For the scene they want to take.

I usually keep it simple and switch it into Av (Aperture priority). I can use the control wheel to change the size of the aperture, to increase or decrease the "depth of field" (the area in focus).
The camera sets the shutter speed.
You can set the ISO, or using the green button let the camera set the ISO too (Auto ISO). But when the light gets too dark, then you want to watch that the ISO doesn't get too high.
Then in that case you might want to use the flash.

^^^ and thats it, thats what my buddy basically told me, and I thoroughly enjoy photography that way. ^^^^

What Should Pentax Do?

Its natural progression, cameras and sensors have a 2 year life cycle. If a "noob" customer walks into a shop and has to choose between a Pentax with 16mp's, and a Canon 20mp or Nikon 24 mp camera, which one would he/she choose ? The sensor makers skipped over 18mp, to surpass canon, this put Sony, Nikon and Pentax 3 generations ahead, and it was too far, and that really shows how much they wanted to surpass Canon. But now they pegged things back like Sony with 20mp on the A58, and now Pentax with the K-S1. I think they caught canon with their pants down and stopped and went, oh, Canon didn't have a 20mp sensor ready nor a 22mp sensor and we've just blasted past them at "Ludicrous speed" (Spaceballs). Lets peg things back a bit and milk the mega pixel rise for our own "Creative destruction" purposes.

I was told that you don't really need anything more than 10mp. But thats not the point, the market wants more and more and more, and as the technology improves, eventually it will hit a glass ceiling. Who knows when that will happen, maybe at 4 billion pixels for crop sensor, I know there's probably some math out there that won't allow it unless its a "Front-and-backlit-plasma-sensor, or dark-matter-sensor, or plasma-fractal-sensor !

I beg to differ and so do governments and legislative bodies, plus the securities and investment agency/watchdogs in western governments. These things are usually tied to anti-monopoly corporate behavior, or price-fixing, corporate collusion activity etc etc.

I think if Canon or Nikon had its way, they would eliminate all its competition - and thats exactly what they are doing. The sponsorship program, is in a nutshell unlawful, and distorts the market. The sponsorship programs - or Photographer welfare program - turns photographers into walking and talking billboards, with no disclaimer stating they're sponsored by a company. Also websites which purport to be independent are actually controlled by the corporate sponsor. Magazines, where on one page there's a full page add for a camera, and the adjacent page there's a glowing review of that camera.

Here where I live, certain businesses only stock Canon and Nikon DSLR's, and their sales people support the duopoly. You can walk into a camera store, and salespeople ONLY push Canon and Nikon, and largely do not know and do not care about the other brands on the shelves. Its not an even playing field ! Where as TV's, there are many brands, and stores do not lock-out other brands.

So why is there so much ant-competitive corporate behavior in the photography industry ? The sponsorship programs have caused the market to be distorted, and the industry has become a duopoly.

So if any other manufacturer tries to step into the market, there is a MASSIVE outcry from individuals (who are sponsored), acting as agent provocateurs. They are even on this site and many others, constantly talking down Pentax or other brands. There is an army of canikonites in the pockets of Canon and Nikon.

So as an example, you may find the Ricoh GR going head to head against the Nikon thing, the Ricoh is better, but the reviewers (Who are sponsored), saying its not good enough. So how can Ricoh step into the industry with products when they can never gain acceptance from photographers.

So what Canon and Nikon have done with the sponsorship programs and the industry, has made it extremely difficult for other manufacturers to gain a foothold in the market- where there are principles of western law, the rule of law and democracy, plus the free market ! People are saying that Canon and Nikon have done very little in the way of innovation, in fact - Canon and Nikons business model and practices, are stifling innovation in the manufacturing industry. Companies are frightened to come to the market with products in fear of the canikon wolves tearing apart the products, and that company being forced to shut down. Sony and Pentax have come to the market with innovations, in-spite of all of this. Sony pioneered APS-C mirrorless, and 35mm mirrorless, and the canikon army derided it and mocked it - with the political arm of Canikon (the sponsored photographers). Then on the other hand, Nikon and Canon are moving into Sony, fujifilm and the others territory of mirrorless - BECAUSE THE CANIKON FORCES THEM OUT OF THE DSLR MARKET ! Canon and Nikon have no business being in mirrorless - IN PRINCIPLE ! (because of the political wing locking the other brands out of the DSLR market).

The Photographic industry is one of the most corrupt industries I've seen. The car industry is pretty bad with the kickbacks to the magazines, buts nothing compared to the canikon.

So as far as I'm concerned, Ricoh IS entitled to a market position and share, and so is Pentax. This is supported by democratic principles, free market principles and are enshrined in laws. Canon and Nikon and the political wing of the sponsored photographers, are destroying the industry with the duopoly, and you should not support their products in any way. Though professional photographers will say - hang on a minute, Canon and Nikon have given us the tools for our profession, we should support them because of the products. But if Canon and Nikon are so good, why do they need to give away cameras and lenses to professionals - a bribe is a bribe !

Hopefully governments will step in and punish Canon and Nikon with massive fines, and abolish the industry bribes and restore a level playing field. Ricoh is entitled to a market share, and hopefully Canon, Nikon and their cronies are shut down. How did the canikon get so big - through bribery, plane and simple corruption. All sponsored photographers and supporters of sponsorship should hang their heads in shame, because its disgraceful.
