Interesting Ricoh Imaging patents (2020 edition)

I saw Kobies video on youtube and found this thread. I read the patent completely differently to Kobie. I see one PDAF sensor and not two. The patent describes the arrangement of the PDAF sensor array intorectangle sensors. You've got a row of rectangular horizontal line sensors, then dual rows of rectangular vertical sensors slightly offset (adjacent to each other). Then another row of line sensors and so on and so-forth. Whether this system works is another story.

It appears that Canon and Nikon use similar (but different) PDAF sensors. The consist of tiny micro lenses that when in focus the light shines through in the centre of the diode, and if it shines to anywhere but the centre it is out of focus. See this link to Nikons patent:

Nikon patent « NEW CAMERA

Lensrental show how it works also through the micro lenses:

Lens Rentals | Blog

After looking into these sensors, I'm not too confident that this new Pentax patent will work well. The pixel density needs to be higher that what the patent suggests, and I can't see how rectangle sensor lenses can even work. I can definitely see how the round micro lenses can work.

Sigma dumps K mount. Thats not good for pentaxians. Tamron has been dumping Pentax too. Sigma also has the L mount alliance to look after. I do not think that Sigma or Tamron make lenses for Fujifilm X mount, and perhaps thats a good thing. Sigma and Tamron would effectively be killing Fujifilms business. Fujifilm gets a couple of Zeiss lenses, Mitakon and samyang and a couple of others. Pentax has samyang and a few others brands to choose from.

Well its not good that Sigma is going, but then Fujifilm is doing fine without them.

WOW, they will listen to user requirements and not be swayed by users .......Basically they will make cameras THEY want and not their customers want and need. Whereas the big three are largely listening to their customers and producing cameras and lenses based on customer requirements.

If Ricoh Pentax has missed it, we are already well behind in autofocus in dslr's. Mirrorless has just leaped ahead of dslr in af performance with eye auto focus with ridiculous keeper rates (close to 100%) ............

Ricoh Pentax REALLY needs to wake up.

Even if Pentax makes an apsc camera at or close to the D500 af performance, mirrorless is already out of reach with eye auto focus and continuous af.

Pentax is behind by two generations in af against canikon, and canikon mirrorless is two generations behind Sony and one gen behind Fuji af.

HELLO RICOH PENTAX .......MIRRORLESS NOT A TREND OR A FAD ANYMORE, ITS THE MARKET LEADER IN CERTAIN MARKETS!

Here in Australia Pentax has disappeared from most camera stores ..............what about that trend? Even then city stores have even smaller Pentax sections now - they've gone form small to smaller shelf space...........

Mirrorless is killing dslr period, and Pentax is looking likely the first to go on the scrap heap.

Ricoh's comments here at the 100 year anniversary are simply pathetic. I'm no economist, but the market is shifting and surging ahead and Pentax is simply NOT being wise in their business decisions to not jump into mirrorless.

Look they need to go mirrorless apsc in the next two years and make a few generational leaps in af performance.

I am hoping for a Pentax K3ii replacement that is mirrorless. I also hoping that Pentax FF is also moving to mirrorless.

They need to do this ASAP.

Sony, Nikon and now Canon is going into FF mirrorless.

Hopefully we'll see a new Pentax mirrorless system. If we don't, then I'll be disappointed and all the press will also mock Pentax for not being up to speed.

I was saying it more than a year ago that Pentax apsc needs to switch to mirrorless. I am hoping that the delay indicates certain changes. The delay's in lenses may also have something to do with it. Nikon D850 has been sold out for a long time, and that was an indication that something was up ......then comes the Nikon Z. Canon has now got leaked images of it R mirrorless and lenses.

C'mom Pentax lets keep up. In fact it would have been better if Pentax had have taken the leap a long time ago. Now that the Q is deleted, I hope the unit developing it will be working on an apsc mirrorless. Some of those leaf shutter lenses would also set Pentax apart from the competition.

The K3ii replacement has been a while. I was calling for a mirrorless more than a year ago, to which people said was wishful thinking (see the first page to this thread). Now the Nikon Z is out and today we have videos of leaked images of the Conon R mirrorless.

No kidding that mirrorless was the way forward. I sort of doubted that Pentax would go mirrorless because of all the new dslr lens releases. Now that the Z and R are coming Pentax has got to get a move on. Hopefully the reason for the long wait for lenses meant that they were moving to mirrorless.

Either way, I'm a fan of Pentax IQ and IBIS.

Latest Pentax patent for a "Tilting Sensor"

I thought the sensor could be tilted anyway. Whether it does or doesn't it will soon. But if you're using it in the way its been described to be able to get the bottom and top of a high rise in focus, then that opens the question of using CDAF, and using focus points to make or check focus. I think you'll need a touchscreen to work this new feature, and if I'm not mistaken, the original link has one patent that might suggest this. "Power information management device and power information management system".

Which glue to reattach loose felt in a DA Limited lens cap?
Posted By zoolander

I'd use a runny super glue. Hobby stores (radiio controlled) sell various grades of super glue for gluing rubber tires to plastic wheels, some are thick and some are runny. The thick stuff takes longer to dry, while the runny stuff is much quicker to dry. Usually store bought super glue is very runny, and dries quick, and the fumes evaporate quickly. You will only need a small drop otherwise it might melt the fabric. Thats how the bond is created, by melting the two surfaces together.

Using rubber cement, you might get a mozzarella string come off the nozzle and when it breaks, it goes anywhere. Turpentine cleanup. Rubber is susceptible to heat, so it might delaminate over time.

What maximum ISO to use on K-70 default auto ISO range?

I just set my K-3 to the highest it goes. When you set a limit, the camera won't shoot, and that annoys me. I'd rather it take a grainy picture than appear to be jammed up. Because then I get confused as to why its not firing, then I start hunting around in settings to see what I've done wrong. I'd rather see the picture pop up on the back of the screen for 3 or 5 seconds, and go yep, that looks yuck, and then adjust another parameter.

When I bought my first dslr (nikon) a friend told me to do just that, and not shoot above ISO 1600, the camera wouldn't take the picture, and I was confused. I do this even on my Fuji camera and max out the ISO so's that it always shoots. Unfortunately in Fuji the base ISO is 200, and when you broaden the ISO range it then starts at ISO 400 ....which is whats stupid about my fuji cameras.

K3ii replacement

Yes how did we get on roasting coffee beans!

One youtuber professional photographer explained things like this. He dumped Nikon for Sony because he wanted a system ......a system in the sense that he has his stills cameras, and dedicated video camera for his video work. He claimed that only Canon and Sony can provide a stills/video system nowadays. It was a toss up between Canon and Sony, and he chose Sony because of the evf.

That all being said, I kind of agree with what that fellow is saying about how Canon and Sony is catering better to professional photographers/videographers. It looks like Nikon is transitioning to third place in the wilderness with the only other dslr maker Pentax.

TCS gave the K-P the second worst camera of the year, and Chris Nichols forced the D850 to be the dslr camera of the year because he's a nikon fanboi, and inspite of the Sony Ar3. So I look at Chris's action as a last gasp for traditional dslr systems, and I think the writing is on the wall for Nikon. Unless if Nikon starts making a range of professional video cameras, I think Nikons demise is guaranteed. Sony IS overtaking Nikon.

The major trends in the market was mirrorless and/or manufacturers are trending to stills/video . Yeah a couple of Nikon cameras are shooting 4K, but others have been doing 4K for longer like panasonic. Sony went all in with mirrorless and copped an absolute truckload of flak for everything they did, but they fine tuned with a new model every 6 months.

The K-P and K-1 tried to emulate the popularity of the Fuji system with dials for everything, so perhaps Pentax was trying follow that trend in the market.

Its hard for a company to dump dlsr and switch over to mirrorless. They can't have a dslr system and mirrorless system without killing another part of their own business. The only way to do it is to make a mirrorless with new mount and adapter, and 4k video. A mirrorless/dslr hybrid that doesn't kill the dslr lens lineup. But mirrorless adapters seem to be problematic for edge performance. Seeing how Pentax announced the 11-18mm 2.8, it shows they're still dedicated to apsc dlsr. So I doubt there'll be a mirrorless replacement for the K3ii.

Video has been a problem for Pentax, and it needs to address that issue with 4K too.

It will be interesting to see which market trend Pentax will be following in the K-3ii successor.

front element size - does size matter?
Posted By zoolander

I've got both lenses. You are referring to the filter thread sizes where the 1.4 is 49mm and 1.8 is 52mm. The 50 1.4 has a larger front element by at least 1/3rd larger than the 50 DA 1.8. Although the DA 50mm 1.8 is claimed to be an apsc lens, if you look at its lens review here on PF, people do use it successfully on the K-1. I'm not gonna put a ruler to the front elements, but yes the 50mm 1.4 front element is significantly larger.

I believe the FA50mm 1.4 is based on the old design from manual era lenses (don't quote me), and a lot of those used 49mm filter threads. I guess it made life easier if most of your lenses took 49mm filters. Numerous zooms also had 49mm filter threads over the decades.

Why did front element size get larger? To improve corner sharpness. The older film era lenses were great, but as photographers became more fussier, they wanted better corner sharpness...........

But do they get this? Not on every lens. Because "Portrait" lenses are supposed to have softer edges and corners, that's the whole point of a portrait lens. I think I've seen a review of either the Canon 50mm 1.2 or 85mm 1.2, and the edges and corners are significantly softer than the center, disappointingly so ......but thats a portrait lens.

I also have the Sigma 50mm 1.4 with a massive front element, and against the FA50mm 1.4, the Sigma lets in more light, how much, I still haven't bothered to check. But in manual and on the same settings, the Sigma will overexpose slightly. I haven't done a show down with both lenses, because first and foremost, the Sigma is probably triple the weight of the FA 50mm 1.4.

If you are wondering which lens is better, the 1.4 or 1.8, then thats hard to determine. Like everyone else on this forum, we have a 50mm addiction, I have 5 fast 50's. The FA 1.4 will let in more light in certain situations that can really help. The DA 1.8 has really nice Bokeh and rounded aperture blades for round specular highlights (Bokeh light balls). The F and FA 50 1.7 is really sharp at 1.7 and has great bokeh.

Get a 1.4 for when you need more light. A 1.7 when you want sharpness wide open. A DA 1.8 for better specular highlights. (Sigma doesn't have the best color rendition IMO but still a great lens). Its something you really need to research for yourself, but I would not be swayed by the canikon crowd who crave this edge to edge sharpness in a portrait lens - they're missing the point. If you really want edge to edge sharpness and a humongous lens to drag around, you won't want to use it as much as one which is discrete and lightweight.

Pentax K-02

Dear Pentax,

I own a Pentax K-3 and many many Pentax lenses. I would like a Pentax Mirrorless camera also, however, I am not a big fan of the Pentax K-01.

Due to the fact that Pentax does not offer a Mirrorless APSC camera, I have also purchased a Fujifilm camera. However, I do not like the image quality, and much prefer the Pentax Prime engine, and white balance. The lenses with Fujifilm are very good.

I would like to someday see Pentax offer a mirrorless camera, which will have its own new mount with an 8mm flange distance, to keep the dimensions small, and allow for some third party lens options.
A K-mount adapter with built in focus motor would be a must have so it can use current K-mount lenses.
New lenses, trinity zooms: 10-20, 16-50, 50-200 or 300. A few primes 16mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 (this is asking alot). Gun metal grey in color.
Distance scales on the lenses (linear motor driven lenses forgo distance scales typically).
An EVF or Hybrid EVF/Optical Viewfinder.
5 frames per second plus, preferably 10fps and a huge buffer.
On sensor phase detect autofocus. Autofocus speed must meet Sony A6000 speed.
Between 200-400 autofocus points.
Shake Reduction IBIS 4.5stops, and Pixel Shift.
Electronic shutter up to 32000th of a second.
Decent video 1080p up to 60fps with the old K-5 electronic-digital shake reduction (4k maybe down the track).
Battery grip to extend battery life only, no boost modes.
A popup flash that tilts up for some bounce flash.

Design: Make it look like it was a prop from Star Wars - something futuristic, purposeful and modern. White and gunmetal grey colors. Don't copy the Sony A7 or Fujifilm boxiness. Canon's M5 looks okay and modern, so I think a modern style would suit. If you want to go retro then go silver top and bottom plate with black leather - it could work well.

I personally like the K-S1 look with rear dial setup ...... A K-S1 without mirror and flange distance, and pentaprism, instead with EVF and new lens mount. The body was slippery, and the perforated leather from the K-30 would have been suitable on the grip to prevent slipping.

(Forum Members can add to any other features they see necessary which I might have missed)

Well, when you've got shipping containers full of K-01's, REJECTED from across the globe. They unpacked those K-01's and set about rebodying them. I guess someone had a bright idea of turning it into the Smurf model, and selling and marketing it to the Anime hipsters in Japan. The Japanese market is a very unique market.

You can argue and go on and on and on about your point, but the camera is ugly .....you either accept this or you don't. I nearly bought one and maybe if I could get one for next to nothing, I might give it a try. Yes its ugly, but I would buy one. Like I said before, I have a Fujifilm camera, and its ugly too, but actually has super-dooper high ISO performance.

Within the concept of the K-01 series, someone had a bright idea to make the K-01. The design brief was to make the camera shoot whilst standing up, and also standing on its side with the 40mm 2.8 XS lens. So the design brief is for a brick shaped camera with K-30 internals. How do you make a brick look attractive .......get in an outside designer with a big name, and let him turn a brick into something attractive. It did not work.

Even if it had have been a beautiful camera, people would have complained about the lack of EVF, new short filangee lens mount, auto focus speed, lack of tilty swivel screen etc etc etc.

When a manufacturer does a half-a**ed job on a camera, they get PUNISHED in the market place. Pentax probably suffered greatly for this camera, however Pentax has now learned that the market is fickle, buyers are more intelligent, prudent and sophisticated than what the manufacturers give us credit for. When the cost of the camera is as much as the cost of a good washing machine, they want to know that they're going to be getting something of value.

Now there was also the Sony NEX camera that came out earlier and was a huge hit with its super compact size, silver metal stylish finish and Pentax was trying to emulate that effort. A thin and slender metallic NEX versus the fat, boxey, plasticy Marc Newson 1920's mirrorless.

Lets stop kidding ourselves, the K-01 failed in the market place ...which is a fact ......and that fact had something to do with the way it looked.

I don't think about anything you've claimed .........because ............ opinions of aesthetics is a science, and not some random subjective matter. If you actually have the claimed educational level you would recognize this.

We are not arguing about one statement ......you are arguing about the statement I made ......and might I add, poorly !

Okay, I'm dealing with facts here:

Here's why - The Pentax K-01 was released into the market place. The K-01 was designed by a famous Industrial Designer. The design was heavily criticised. Sales were poor. The camera was heavily discounted and deleted from production. The End !

The Canon EOS M was released. Designed in house. It had no EVF (Like the K-01). The autofocus performance was poor with both M lenses and adapted EF lenses. The autofocus performance was heavily criticised. Customers expected ultra fast AF in a compact mirrorless body. Canon disabled or poorly implemented the autofocus so as not to endanger its DSLR business. Sales were poor. The camera was heavily discounted and deleted. The End ......but not totally. The EOS M 2 came out only in Asia. EOS M 5 might actually be the first acceptable incarnation, yet it still falls heavily short of the performance of the Sony A6000 and up.

Those are pretty much so the facts of two mirrorless cameras that have flopped.

The Pentax K-01 was a flop because it was an unattractive camera ....FACT ! Evidence provided: cause and effect established. Case closed ...everybody knows this except you !

Your only argument is: Oh well, a cameras visual appeal is a subjective matter ....... Quote Wikipedia with a link to Philosophy that aesthetics/attractiveness is subjective and objective depending on philosophical standpoint.

Rebuttal to your argument that it is a philosophical standpoint is: The science of Social Psychology shows that attractiveness/aesthetics is a biological matter, and also a social matter, and there are other aspects associated also.

Philosophy doesn't answer the question as to why the K-01 FAILED in the marketplace ........Social psychology does!

You might think its an attractive camera, but the marketplace did not. You might even be Marc Newson !

Lets deal in facts and not in philosophy.

Well next when you're at Mcdonald's looking at the menu, you'll notice how the pictures present the food in all its glorious perfectness. Yet when you open up your grease covered box Big Mac, you find its flopped over with ingredients misaligned, and it doesn't look nowhere near as appetizing as the one on the menu board.

Well assuming that your father is a royalist, I'd say his dislike for Meghan is based on a political standpoint because she is an American and not British. She is clearly attractive. He would probably prefer that Prince Harry hook up with some British blue blood rather than being with a half white (Dutch and Irish) and African American woman.

The 5 Laws of Attraction | Laws of Attraction

Attraction in psychology stems partly from biology. I am a male, and I like cars which have curves that are reminiscent to the shape of a woman's body. When cameras are curvey they might appeal to the male psyche because they have attributes of a woman's body. However, males also like masculine designs of steel like what we see with machine guns ....they generally do not have any feminine elements. They are machines designed to kill and are attractive to some of the base instincts of the male psyche.

These retro designed cameras seem to appeal to males because they have that polished metal look wrapped with leather - or the skin of an animal - and that appeals to the basic male psyche. For females, they might be attracted to the retro camera because it has become fashionable, and that certain "era's" in style are important to the female psyche. Younger men might be attracted to the retro-look cameras because they are into fashion, and these are the characters whom are labelled hipsters ........young men who try to be fashionable first, putting form ahead of function. So the young male hipster bases his attraction to a camera based on social reasoning, so's he is accepted within his social group, rather than relying on his basic sexual instincts.

This leaves the K-01 in the art deco style which probably appeals to a more androgynous psyche ......... Smooth straight lines, and curves that are neither feminine nor masculine.

Looking at my K-3, it looks like a male camera, its metal, its tough, its angular and curvey at the same time - it looks tough. Looking at a Porsche 993 GT2 it looks like a hot woman with sexy sumptuous lines, hips and almost having breasts - but it still looks tough. The K-01 is neither here nor there, and thats why it did not appeal to the broader heterosexual audience. But the people who do use it really like it as a camera.

Attraction is not subjective, it is largely biological, and then also needs to be socially acceptable. Social psychology has identified this long ago.
