FF vs APS-C

Why do people buy a BMW 5-Series that they aren't skilled enough to drive at its limit, when an Accord will accomplish the same thing 99% of the time they are sitting in it (and they only sit in it 45 minutes a day anyway)? Because they're upper-middle-class status seekers.

If you don't have to, why choose FF OR APSc?

Have both bodies and a great set of lenses - if you take telephoto, landscape AND macro photos. If you are wealthy enough and just want to have a FF, you will. If you sell your work and FF will improve your business you will get one. If you have old FF lenses and you want to use them as they were designed, you will get a FF (but you might be disappointed - even by the FA Lim's).

Almost all of the buyers of a FF Pentax will be just like almost all the people who always bought Pentax and Canon and Nikon top-line film cameras and lenses - upper-middle-class status seekers. They aren't likely to ask your question and wouldn't be able to answer it if they did.

Otherwise, if you are rational, you will find a good compromise, or shoot with what you have, when you have it, where you are.

Introducing the K-FF, the camera you don't buy

Stardate 04012015, Pentax announce it's first Full Frame DSLR, the K-FF. You shout for joy, spend 79 consecutive hours on photography
forums talking about the event, but in the end, you don't buy. Why?

I was mulling this question today while working in the garden. Admittedly, I'm not clamoring for a FF body. I still own a K10D as my most
current DSLR and will be more than content to upgrade to a K-3 before the year is out. But what if a FF body becomes available before
I get the K-3? Would I buy? There a few key factors.....

1. Price
If I had $10,000 of readily disposable income I'd happily add a 645z to my collection. But I don't and so I don't. But what about the K-FF?
I have little doubt that the K-FF will offer tremendous value for it's price in comparison to virtually any other FF body on the market. But
I also expect Pentax will not release a budget FF body that will compete with it's top end APS-C. Most logical price point is between
the K-3 and 645z and thus the K-FF will likely hit the streets with a MSRP of $2500-$3500. And that is $1500-$2500 more than the
$1000 I'm willing to spend on an upgrade at this time. Price alone will likely stay my hand for the moment.

2. Size
Personally, I think the M-Series represent the ideal sized camera body. Large enough to get a comfortable grip, small enough to carry
anywhere, anytime. My K10D, by comparison, is >BIG<. And it's bigness means that I am less inclined to take the K10D along as a
casual camera. The K10D is largely relegated to the studio and the Q7 and various film bodies see the world. In all likelihood the K-FF
will be at least as big as the K10D, though realistically it will be bigger still. Size alone won't prevent my purchase of the K-FF but
will certainly be a factor. The closer the K-FF gets to D4s dimensions, the less likely I am to buy.

3. Shake Reduction
I've read many of the discussions about SR. I understand the advantages of putting the SR in the lens, particularly for long focal lengths
as well as the possibility that FF SR may not be feasible. I shoot mainly wide to short tele so care less about the drop off in effectiveness
at the long end. And I greatly appreciate the cost and weight savings by not having that feature in every single lens. Whatever the rationale,
no in body SR would be a serious deal buster for me.

4. Video
Lots of noise about video as the present day must have feature for any camera. No video > serious shortcoming > no one going to buy
a camera without it. And it's gotta be 4k whatever, 'cause I wanna know I can shoot a Coca-Cola commercial with my DSLR if asked.
Meh. I've intentionally shot a half dozen videos with my various digital cameras over the past half dozen years. I've probably shot
10 times that many accidentally when the mode dial inadvertently got bumped and subsequently missed my intended still shot. Perhaps
some day I will want to shoot video. But not today. And I really don't want to pay for that feature on my camera. I have no idea what
4k video capability will add to the price of the K-FF, but if it's there I'm going to resent it unless someone can show it's a relatively
costless add-on.

I could add more, but most other features are either relatively insignificant to the decision, (24mp vs 36mp, Ricoh vs Pentax badged, etc),
or likely to be a non-issue to worry about, (the K-FF will be WR, it will be ergonomic and intuitive, etc).

So what about you?

K2D - new FF from Pentax.

On the contrary, you would - you would just make new K-mount lenses for the body, and update old ones. Just as Nikon did.

A completely new mount has some merit if you're going MILC only, if you have an AF-enabled K adapter, but for DSLR it would make zero sense to create a whole new mount. No current Pentaxian would have any incentive to upgrade to it over a Canon or Nikon FF, for one thing.

EDIT: I see you mean the coupling to fully use older MF K and M. Well, I still think you would sell more bodies that way than you would lose lens sales, and then once you get that buyer into a FF body (vs Canon/Nikon,) you can depend on a yearly onslaught of never-quenchable LBA to keep them buying new lenses. One can only resist temptation so long, no matter how many older lenses you have.

I guess you haven't heard about these new 2-2.5k $ FF cameras called the Sony A7 and A7r.
Lots of people are happily using their old film lenses on their new A7's and A7rs. Sony even bundles adapters.

I like the concept but Im not sure if it is a good direction for Ricoh to take with their first foray into digital FF. It is easy for Nikon to do something like this because they have other options in the FF line. Many of the newer users may not like everything being knob controlled. I personally would love for Ricoh to release a Retro FF camera but i feel it would make more sense for Ricoh to stick with a more tradition DSLR design than to bust out the box with something that would be a large risk in my eyes. I think we all know that Pentax is not really known for being big risk takers.

I really like the K2 D name. It's got very powerful marketing potential, given the name's obvious association with this:

If it is an A series lens there are no restrictions. If the lens lacks the A setting it is limited to stop down metering in M mode or shooting wide open in AV mode. Additionally it will be limited to full power flash in M mode, P-TTL requires a lens with the A setting.

Had not even heard of this scene.. From another source..

"....After the 1980 Olympics ended, the Soviet ambassador to Poland demanded that Kozakiewicz be stripped of his medal over his "insult to the Soviet people".[3] The official response of the Polish government was that Kozakiewicz's arm gesture had been an involuntary muscle spasm caused by his exertion."

:D :D :D :D It's hard not to romanticize the social change you lot went through back then, and it's naive of me to even link all that suffering with any sentiment.

That's a wonderful story I was completely naive too. :(

Thank you for sharing it! :)

Split image focusing screen for KX and K2.

If you are used to the split-image screens I can see the microprism being a bit hard to get used to. The microprism is just as easy to focus with, if you are having problems just use the area outside the microprism. You will get used to it after a while, I have cameras with both and each one is easy to use. A focusing aid may help and I would recommend the Pentax Refconverter II for any telephoto lenses.

Split image focusing screen for KX and K2.

Ummm...this is pretty much the norm, even with the brightest of viewfinders. On the other side of the aisle, most split image are half-dark at f/4 as well. At least that is the case with my Super Program and other cameras that I own that have split image screens. At f/4 you have to have your eye properly centered. Any narrower and half-dark is the rule.

The solution, of course, is to use the ground-glass doughnut for focus with slower lenses (strangely missing on the Super Program, but present on my Ricohs...go figure). I own the KX and the microprism is a little on the fine size and difficult to use with my Pentax-M 200/4 in dim light (say interior room light). On the other hand, the ground glass for the KX is quite excellent and easily snaps focus with this lens in dim light. To be honest, I have long felt that my KX has the best viewfinder for difficult focus of the cameras that I own.

Of course, your mileage may vary. Use of both the ground-glass and microprism assumes good enough vision to see the screen. For many of us with older eyes, this is more and more difficult.
