Waterproof DSLR?

This could work but the lens selection would be limited to one or two lenses. Underwater, I'm thinking that a wide-angle lens makes most sense, as you can't generally see very far underwater unless it's crystal clear.

Too many glass half-empty people out there. The Pentax K3 II sounds like a very good camera in its own right. That's how it should be judged, particularly since it's arrival follows so closely after the original K3. Yes, I expect Pentax's next flagship APS-C DSLR to have all of the latest features (namely a better sensor, a tilting screen, and built-in WiFi), but I imagine that Ricoh has planned this so that the FF camera can have the biggest "Wow" factor, i.e. be the first to have all of those features in one package. They clearly want the FF to make a big splash, and I expect it will.

The Full Frame: What will make you buy it?

A big, bright viewfinder, plain and simple. I'm not an engineer, but I don't see why Pentax couldn't utilize a viewfinder with the magnification and coverage of the old MX's: 95/95. It's a pleasure to look through. I find it odd that the FF competitors have magnifications in the 70-80% range. That would be a distinguishing feature.

My heart melts when I use my MX. It's the viewfinder -- 95/95 in a "full frame" format. It's also an extremely compact body. How can it be so difficult to duplicate that in 2014?!

No, this is not a joke.

On the sensor point, image quality would have been better had they stuck with the 16 MP Sony sensor of K5, etc., fame. Clearly, all things being equal, more pixels in a smaller space mean worse noise. So I wish they would not get caught up in the MP race and stick to what matters to (I suspect) the vast majority of users.

On the colour front, I shoot both RAW and Jpeg depending on the circumstances. I usually set WB manually using a grey card. I don't think Pentax renders skin tones very well based on their software presets. I don't want to spend my time screwing around in Photoshop screwing around with colours. For god's sake, I took a portrait of a colleague the other day with their brother's old Nikon D40. With default settings and no adjustments and no fuss, the pictures just looked great. That's what I mean.

Take it easy Pentax apologists.

Dear Pentax or a sensor manufacturer it may concern,

Stop producing APS-C sensors that are stagnant (or worse) in terms of all-around performance simply to accommodate more pixels. I don't care about having 24 megapixels. In fact, 6 to 10 megapixels would be more enough for just about everything I shoot. That would allow me to make the occasional 10 X 14 print, which I rarely do. Otherwise, I am viewing and reviewing, sharing, etc., the vast majority of my pictures on a monitor, as I suspect 95%+ of shooters are, which means that even 6 to 10 MPs is way too much already! A 32 inch 1080p screen at a few feet away looks pretty darn sharp, and that's just 2 MP.

Why can't a sensor manufacturer make an APS-C sensor proportional to a full-frame offering, such that we can have "full frame" low light capability with an APS-C number of pixels?

In other words, please release a 10 MP "K3-L" that would deliver outstanding all around low light performance. Oh, and please also tinker with the colour settings in your software so that skin tones look good, too. Skin tones look dreadful on Pentax compared to Nikon.

Many thanks in advance.

A bit off topic, but has anybody heard about any developments on the DA Limited zoom? I'd be more interested in a compact, high-quality ~ 22 - 40mm zoom with good build quality than the ultra-wide currently under discussion.

I posted the italicized comments on February 19, and stand by it. I would be flabbergasted if Pentax did anything shocking: they always seem to be one step behind.

One thing that is never talked about is this: a feature that would allow you to use the K and M series lenses in anything other than M mode. In particular, one should be able to manually, but quickly specify an aperture from a quick menu that would enable you to shoot in, e.g., Program Auto, and get the aperture to stop down when shooting. As it stands, shooting with M lenses is barely worthwhile since it is practically impossible to be spontaneous in most lighting conditions. My M42 glass, on the other hand, is a joy to use in PA mode because exposure is accurate when stopped down (albeit the viewfinder gets dimmer, but so what). Anyway, the solution would be purely software-based and I wish Pentax would pursue this in the K3 or future models.

____

The K3 / K3s will:

- feature the 24 mp sensor (Sony?) found in the D5200;
- have AA filter removed in "s" version (that's obvious)
- have more focus points, finally, and god-willing
- have some modest, incremental improvements to the AF system
- have a couple of other little neat things, like when the level was introduced (into the K7); and probably focus peaking like on the K-01

In short, Pentax will release a very safe, modest upgrade to the K5 line in line with what we've seen so far. It will certainly be APS-C. I highly doubt we see FF in 2013.

Sorry if this has been addressed to death already.

The DA* "normal" lens should be Pentax's (and every manufacturer's) flagship lens. It is a lens that can be used for 80 - 90% of applications. Unfortunately, the DA* 16-50mm is not that lens. While it's optical performance is average, perhaps adequate (though not at that price), its motor failure issues are a huge red flag for me, and why I have not purchased one to date. I suspect that any serious, professional photographer would builds their kit around a manufacturer's very best "normal" zoom lens. You can make as many class-leading APS-C DSLRs as you like (see, e.g., K10d, K5), but without that foundational lens you cannot attract a serious-enough following. In my opinion, it has been a major shortcoming of the Pentax DSLR brand.

The next DA* "normal" zoom cannot come soon enough. In my opinion, given the state of sensors, it need not be a constant f/2.8. It could be a constant f/3.5 or f/4, with a DC or the most reliable motor available, as well as screw dive in case of failure. Also, it need not extend to 16mm - too many sacrifices with such extremes. I'd be happy with a nominal 18-85mm, f/4 (actually, say 20 - 80mm) that was a real and even performer across the whole range. Heck, I'd actually be happy with a 20 - 50 mm, f/4! Just something that delivers and is reliable.

Pentax, can you deliver on the next DA* normal lens?

My MX disagrees. Tiny, "full frame" body. 95% coverage; 95% magnification. Why can't Pentax achieve a VF like this again? Make it twice as big as the MX, I don't care... just give me a premium VF. It's what makes the experience, for me.

Please - release a DA* to replace the 16-50mm! As stated above, it could happen, because something like it is on the roadmap...

A 17-85mm f/4 is my best guess (or perhaps hope), to complement the the DA* 60-250mm f/4, which is a resounding success. Quite honestly, with today's and tomorrow's sensors, the many compromises that are apparently necessary in order to get a constant f/2.8 are simply not necessary. What more would someone need than a K5II/IIs and a DA* 17-85 f/4 for 90% of your needs???

My guess is the "K-naught".

In all seriousness though, I think Pentax will come out with a FF dslr to make use of those beautiful FA limiteds. From a business strategy point of view this makes sense: let other companies mess around with the initial FFs (probably not making much profit on them, if any) - and jump in once the technology is well developed. It is quite a leap to go from a $1500 to $10,000 body in the lineup. Plus, Pentax could easily revive a handful of old FF lens designs (e.g. FA* 28-70mm f/2.8; FA 20mm f/2.8; etc.) so that the FF system wouldn't miss a beat (the DA*60-250mm is FF, as I understand).

People will say: APS-C is basically FF quality; has the DR; noise control; etc... My attraction to that system, however, is the 135 perspective. APS-C at the wider angles simply does not have an attractive look and feel to it, IMO.

Make the DA* (24 or 28mm, or in between).

Please.

A fast, weather-sealed prime to pair with the K5. Something that would be a slightly cropped moderate wide angle/wide normal.

In other words, the perfect lens.

Dear Pentax,

An DSLR in the mold and heritage of the MX. Keep it simple - one dial for shutter in the same place, one dial for ISO where the winder knob was; fully manual; no SR; no fancy modes. Just a pure, digital, MX. I would even call it... the MX.

It would be a beautiful complement to the DA Limited lenses.

Thoughts?

Thanks for helping out... I bet a bunch of people were saying: Gee, I'm so confused - is this guy talking about the waterproof category?

The point remains: the picture quality coming out of the W90 is not up to the level of the class leaders.

Thanks again.

(BTW - the heading for that class is missing from the picture in the post that started the forum.)
