VitaminC,

You might want to edit the original post so it shows the price for the lens of $450 in the title. Right now, when people look at the list of things for sale, it looks like the lens is $900, and they might not open it. Just a suggestion. Good luck with the sale.

I was thinking the same thing! I brought my second camera to a football game, thinking I would be able to do the same thing. Found out quickly that it would take a lot of practice to be able to do that!

My son's first football game since he was 9 years old. He's a HS senior, WR #5. Had a big game, proud of him. Biggest problem for me, as a parent, you don't see the game very well when taking pictures! These are some of the best ones, many many worse ones taken. By the end of the game proper is exposure is somewhere around 1/350 f2.8 ISO6400. Very difficult then.

So glad Pentax isn't making a mirrorless now!

Can someone educate me on the advantages of mirrorless? I remember when they were first discussed, people were talking about their smaller size, but since the lenses for them are so big, that doesn't really matter. Has Sony mirrorless been so successful because they were mirrorless, or because they had great features? Thanks.

Isn't K-1 crop mode a good place to allow flash with shutter speed faster than 1/200?

Yes, I am not sure of the physical limitations of the shutter mechanism, but I think in the past people have found some sort of wierd workarounds to demonstrate how much of a black band there would be at certain shutter speeds, so I don't think it should prevent it from happening. Also, Nikon and Canon allow it, so I wouldn't think it should be hard to do, but as you said, we don't know that for sure.

As far as the benefit to Pentax, I agree with you, this is a minor benefit. I'm just hoping that the effort to implement is low enough to get it done.

OK, I'm back on my bandwagon again of Pentax allowing us to trigger a flash at a shutter speed faster than the sync speed and deal with any resulting black bars.

Firstly, I know about High Speed Synch mode. I'm not talking about that. There are limitations to HSS that I am trying to get around. In case you are not aware, both Nikon and Canon will allow you to trigger a manual flash at a shutter speed faster than the camera's flash sync shutter speed. That is all I am asking for. Just a menu override choice to allow the camera to fire a flash, when say the shutter is at 1/250.

Wouldn't crop mode of the K-1 be a place where that would make sense? I'm guessing that any black bar from the shutter at 1/250th would be cropped out anyway, right? Actually, a cool thing would be to make the sync speed of the K-1 1/250 when in crop mode! But I'm not even asking for that, just a firmware update adding a choice in the menu to allow she shutter to fire. Does anyone know why this simple thing can't be done?

The user should have to override a menu setting in order for it to be allowed, so they should not bump into it accidentally. Nikon and Canon allow it, I don't see why Pentax can't.

I agree with Class A, if you want to get rid of shadows, bounce your flash off of a wall or ceiling or some large white object. This would not require you to get an umbrella yet.

The biggest rule to learn first is that the bigger the light source in relation to your subject, the softer the light will be on your subject. Your flash head is tiny, walls and ceilings are big.

Flash modifiers - anyone try the Lastolite Ezybox Speedlight 2.

I would stick with the Foamie. It's all about the size of the light source. The foamie will give you the same size as the Lastolite. I tested a ton of things DIY and otherwise. It's just strictly size and ease of use. There is no magic modifier for on camera flash.

Starting to test Godox HSS with Cactus V6ii, HSS works in AV mode?

Hi all,

I am starting to test my fairly new Godox system in HSS mode using a Cactus V6ii on my K-5sii. It was my understanding that HSS would not work with the Camera in AV mode. In the tests that I just did, it seems to work fine in AV mode. I tried in both AV and M, and seems to work either way. I was under the impression from any reading that I had done that if the camera was in AV mode that the flash would not fire with a shutter speed faster than 1/180th. I thought I would have to use M mode. Maybe just PTTL HSS won't work in AV mode?

This was using either a Godox AD360, or a Godox V850ii.

Yongnuo Flash

If your goal is to have multiple off camera manual flashes controlled by a controller on your camera at a low cost, Yongnuo is a good way to go. They have had some issues with reliability though. I have recently moved from Yongnuo to Godox, because Godox has a more complete flash system, that is more integrated with each other. Yongnuo does allow you to control the flash zoom remotely where Godox does not.

Just be prepared with backup gear for Yongnuo. The prices are low enough where that is not too much of an issue.

A Young Pentaxian's concerns

I'm not young, but I am aware enough to realize that video is becoming more important every day. Younger users realize this, and the brand won't grow or continue to be viable if Pentax continues to downplay video.

The Nikon SB-28 is one of the smallest of the full capability flashes. It is a great overall flash. It's an older model, so they are under $50 now used I believe.

HSS on Cheap ? and Cactus V6 ?

Andy,

If the R930 is really as simple to use as you say it is, then Acon should have an English speaking person make a quality video to demonstrate and explain it.

Also, their website needs work too. Under the products page you see a R930 and a flash that is not available yet. Then, when you go to the Store tab, a R930II is listed? If it is in the store, why is there no spot for it on the products page? In the store, it says this - "It lets the Nikon triggers think mounted on a Nikon Camera, Thus make all functions except for TTL of the Nikon triggers available." How is this any different than the regular R930?

That diagram is comical. I've said it before, this is 2017, there is no reason to be fighting with blinking LEDs to set things. Even a $33 PAIR of Yongnuo 605 triggers introduced in 2014 has an LCD screen.

The 4k video challenge

I don't have much need for video. But I have been wishing that Pentax would keep up with their video specs for a long time. Why? Because I want them to not be a niche camera company. Market share leads to third party support for PHOTO functionality. It always amazes me when people support their camera company like it's their child or something. It's a TOOL.

I like taking portraits. This has led me to two needs, off camera HSS, and wanting a high quality portrait lens. Regarding flashes. The Godox brand has a huge full line of flashes and triggers that are becoming very popular and is very affordable. For TTL and HSS support, they have versions for Canon, Nikon, and Sony. No support for Pentax.

I saw a story yesterday about how the Sigma Art 85mm 1.4 received the highest dxo score ever. Checked how much it was, $1200, reasonable. Mounts avaialbe? Canon, Nikon, Sigma.

Maybe only 20% of people are very interested in video abilities. Maybe only 25% are interested in fast AF. Maybe only 10% are interested in advanced flash systems and higher sync speeds. All of these small percentages adds up to a LOT of people. I'm a photographer who is trying produce the best photos I can. Owning a camera that is a niche brand is starting to hurt me. I know fanboys, leave and don't let the door hit you in the ass! Yes, I probably should have switched earlier when it would have been less expensive for me. I do like my Pentax stuff though, and would prefer to stay. The point is, increasing Pentax marketshare helps everyone by being able to do more.

The funny thing is, I don't think the "don't pollute my camera with video features" crowd would mind at all being a 1% market share landscape photography only group. I hope it doesn't go that way.

Yes, I was able to turn off the sleep feature, so that is not much of an issue. I would prefer to be able to set it to something like 30 minutes, but no biggie.

Interested to hear what you think once you try it out. With such a large sreen, I'm surprised they don't have a mode where they can show power and mode for 3 groups. Can you check to see 1) How many groups it controls, 2) If focus assist light works, 3) if your camera can wake the XT32 from sleep ?

The 4k video challenge

You could argue the same thing in many different industries. Show me how much colder your food is, or how much better it tastes because your refrigerator is stainless steel. Show me how much better your TV show that is broadcast in 1080i looks on your 4k TV. I'm guessing that less than 5% of what people watch on their 4K TVs is 4K content. That hasn't stopped the market from moving to 4K. Create the best TV in the world with fantastic features and a great picture and only 1080p today, and see how well it sells.

I'm not sure how much it matters at this point. The video revolution is here. Pentax has clearly stated with words and actions that video is not important to them. Anyone who does their research first that has any interest in video would not buy a Pentax. Pentax made the same choice when the digital revolution came. They stuck with film.
