The fs5 is definitely aimed for the camcorder market. The grip integrates a shock mount for a shotgun mike and a nearby XLR input with optional phantom power. (and a second phantom power input at the rear). There's also an onboard mic on top of the top grip but it has the performance you'd expected from an embedded camera mic.

I was hiking around Powell Gardens in the Kansas City area and caught some bees pollinating!
One at my wider crop, one highlighting Mr. Bee. The 600 is a challenge to use, for sure, but I love working with this lens.

A study in Harvey, working on testing a new K-1 and working out which of my flashes still work with remote sync after a period of letting them sit. Part of a series in f/11 1/100 lighting practice with pretty much every Pentax FF and MF lens in my collection. This one became my 'reference' to compare the rest too, taken with the DFA100 Macro. My flashes at the time are a Shanny 600FGZ on-camera, a Yongnuo 560IV as my left light, and a Yongnuo 660 as my right light.

Unfortunately nobody has made a 'smart' E-mount to K/KAF mount adapter. Metabones could probably make one, but I bet their PM/biz people dont see a market for it. With some cleverness I bet you could make an arduino do the things and slap it in a 3d printed casing, but thats a future project.

After seeing some examples of other people using one on the forum I figured I'd try out an emount camera again, and I'm pretty satified with my experience with FA* glass, and with the 20mm A glass I have too.
Feature/setupwise the fs5 is pretty easy to rig up too, and the weight is about the same as a gripped K-1 or a 645Z so I can still handhold it.
I'll make some proper videos soon :)

If you're doing rocketry photography I'm fairly certain that you'll always be at hyperfocal distance. Why not use an A/A* lens? I don't know if its the same for all the long MF pentax lenses, but my 645 A* 600 has a movable detent lock for setting a desired locking focus point/limit as well. At that distance, you probably don't need AF.

The hood on pentax lenses may or may not have the tension screws based on a factor of vintage/size/'prestige' of the lens. Here's a collection of pentax 'clip-on' lenses, from multiple eras, with and without the tension screws:
In clockwise order, from top left we have:- PH-RBC82 - 82mm front filter clipon hood, shipped with HD DA645 28-45mm
- PH-RBE - 49mm front filter, shipped with D-FA Macro 100mm
- Unknown part # - 77mm front filter, shipped with FA* 80-200mm 2.8
- PH-RBC - 62mm front filter, shipped with D-FA 28-105
- PH-RBN - 67mm front filter, shipped with DFA 645 55mm

IR channel removal only works on color films due to the different reflectivity of B&W film. Most B&W film has reflectivity in the IR channel, which color films do not. (Thus the usability of the IR trick.)

All of my k-series cameras have held up better than that after getting back from the burn. I also use the Heie method for cleaning them after though, before opening anything or taking anything off! My K-1 was the sample this year. The riskiest bit is, of course, the card door. This year I got away on a single set of cards, so I only had to open the battery door. I've also gone out with the K-7, K-5(iis), and the 645Z. Lenses have been the 50-200 DA WR, 18-55 DA WR, 16-50 DA*, 50-135 DA*, and the 28-105 DA WR kit this year. On all these lenses, the pentax weather sealing mount rings and inner seals do their jobs wonderfully.

Probably the only selfie I'll ever send up, self-timer with the A20 on a tripod, and a bit of fill flash since I wasn't angled with the sun.

How do the FA* primes shoot? I've considered jumping into them, but I feel like I might just be embracing a bit of LAD, since I already have tha FA31 and 77 ltd, and a 50/1.2.

Cathedral Park, waddling around in Portland today. Both shot an FA* 28-70. The flowers are F10, 1/40, ISO 1000 @ 48mm. The jetty/shore is F5.6, 1/100, ISO 200 @ 70mm.
The flowers I gave the zone system treatment in darktable, the jetty was just given some contrast and local contrast, along with a tiny bit of shadow boosting to bring out the detail in the wood.

SCP in the wild? 1/640 f/3.2 FA* 28-70 @ 31mm ISO100. The sharp shadow-light transitions on the structure required some defringing work, but not too badly. I also could have framed this better I think, but I was on the move.
Oh, also cropped to 4x5 here. Maybe the uncropped (bottom) is better? |
