I would like to see a FF foveon chip or at least a pentax body with the last 15mp foveon aps-c chip.

Pentax K-5 Officially Announced

This K5 is a logical 'evolution' but nothing to rave about, especially considering price against competitors

cons for now (compared to the D7000)

- overpriced
- what's the point of a metal body when the mount itself is fixed on a plastic shell ?
- Where is predictive / 3d tracking ?
- still only 11 AF points
- No dual cards / no sdxc support
- motion jpeg avi video recording, come on h264 is here now
- no 24fps mode ?
- X-Sync speed have not evolved (still 1/180)
- viewfinder with less magnification than D7000 (.92 vs .94)
- no framing grid in the viewfinder
- only 2 self timer values vs 4
- no gps option

You reaction is understandable as a loyal pentax user, however, a first time buyer for exemple will mostly choose canon or nikon. If you look at specs and price of thoses cameras (60d vs d7000) nikon wins.

You don't need to replace ALL your lens but if the cost of replacing them frighten you, don't even thing about the 645D !

Whatever pentax bring us, I'm afraid that nikon will be the better buy this time, not only for current nikon users but also for many others.

Not only the scale but also the entire frame is way less sharp, foreground included. Considering the shoot is f/8, I doubt it is really out of focus. My guess is the lens is at fault or another problem with severe back/front focusing.

On the same site, you can download raw files from D90 and K20D. Theses samples at iso 1600 show the opposite : better sharpness from the D90. What I mean is that so many factors are influencing what we see on review sites. Lens (and sample variation between same lens), focusing, camera settings, lighting etc

So it's a bit misleading. The best way to compare 2 bodies should be raw format, no NR, the exact same lens (so an M42 would fit on both bodies), enough DOF to avoid misfocusing, controled lighting etc

That's because the dumbs at DPR set D90 to NR = High (how could it be a fair comparaison with K20d btw ?) which effectively remove details. But with NR= off it's better (page 21 show differences between NR reduction)

High iso is not my main complain about K-7 though, in fact it's more the low iso noise and overall sharpness/micro constrast that annoy me, I've the same feeling about the canon 50D for ex. I believe there is too much pixels, if only they could have made a 10 mp sensor instead...

I second that. I won't spend money on that thing. You can add whatever functionnality as you want, IQ is the most important.

According to your tests, the K-7 sensor is not an improvement at all, in fact it seem's noisier than k20d which was already noisier than D90 and D300. The chroma noise is more visible. Should be interesting to compare again when production units arrives.

thanks falconeye for your work, much appreciated !

this not really encouraging at all, final firmware can't do miracles... if this is *nearly* what we can expect from production hardware, they just failed where they shouldn't : IQ.

K-7 Video Questions

it's possible to add manual iso control in video and what JCPentax said about 5Dmk2 is not a concern here. Iso control isn't power hungry nor the ability to control shutter speed. The canon have a dedicated chip but it's purpose is to do the actual H264 encoding. Concerning the price, yes 5dmk2 cost more but it's an FF, 21mpx camera ! I mean they have not increased the price because of new manual controls. Canon rarely add such functionnality aftersale, still they done it. The question is why Pentax refuse to do it ? they could sell far more cameras, really. Pentax, listen to your customers, everybody interested in video will need it.

I don't agree, at iso 100-200 k10d ccd sensor is better than (beta) K-7 at the same iso. That was discussed already for the K20D, samsung cmos sensor is noisier at low iso.

the K-7 seem's a very capable camera on paper, nice specs etc, still I found that low iso performance is not as good as K10D. But, it may be due to early hardware like Roland has said and I believe he's right. Until we have access to production units, I recognize it's too early to conclude.

K-7 image quality concern

I've looked at some K-7 pictures taken recently (firmware v0.35) and honestly I'm a bit worried about final images quality. Even at iso 100, there is high amount of noise especially in shadows, plus some vertical banding (@100iso) ! the overall K-7 samples look softer than K10D. I remember the k20d was problematic too. This is the same place, but not with same angle.

here is K-7, 100 iso, 28mm M prime lens
image moved to zip file

here is K10D, 100 iso, 50mm M prime (chinon) lens (no sharpening applied)
image moved to zip file

Waiting to have some final firmware images but, if it doesn't improve at low (base) iso, this camera is definitly not an upgrade for me.

june, 14 th update:

comparing sharpness with nikon toy camera D5000 & nikon D700

The Pentax image is official one found on pentax site. State of the art star lens show a pretty lack of sharpness and contrast on K-7, even at f/5 which is basically where the lens should be stellar. What's the deal with this new sensor ?

what I fear the most about the K7 is size, I find it too small. Still, I've to handle it before deciding to purchase it.

I fully agree with NunoBarbosa, this mode is unuseable. It clearly show the artefacts (pretty disturbing indeed) and resolution is crappy as hell. It looks like when you resize an image with the worst algorythm, with no anti-aliasing applied, this is really awfull especially after viewing the canon video... they rushed the video mode just to mention it on specs sheet. pathetic. Have to save for 5d II now

thanks theses shots are excellents! the bokeh is very nice.

any of you having specifics problems with FF/BF with this lens ? I read some peoples in others mount having such issues, altough, it's more prone to focusing errors due to thin DOF.

I'm afraid that nobody knows for sure coz Ned used a beta firmware here. May be if people start crying loud, Pentax will notice it. We want total control !!!

I used TMPG encoder 4 for this.

I think the candle scene has been pushed too far (was shot in auto) the camera certainely have to up the iso value, but you certainly can do better manually. I have re-encoded in mpeg2 this scene, with gamma correction (thanks Karl for pointing that out) and a little bit of noise reduction. The result is a bit darker but much pleasant to loot at IMO. Look here for download the corrected video file.

Sigma or Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8

I had both lens at some time (even got 2 tammy). The tamron was good optically (a little better than sigma), in fact better @ 135mm than 70 and 200, but they both suffered from focusing issues, randomly...

the sigma feel better in your hand, optical quality was on par with the tammy, perhaps a bit yellowish in tones, but ok. focusing was much better IMO, silent, quite fast and spot on. FTM also is a big plus. The tripod collar on the sigma is better, you can remove it very quickly.

Without focusing issues, I would pick the tamron but... sigma seem's a better choice overall.

I'm currently searching for an 50mm f1.4 lens, this new sigma look good but I would have some opinions, especially on K mount. I've read the reviews but user's feedback would be great. I'm not interested in Pentax DA 55, I want it to cover 35mm format as well. The other option I have is the FA 50, still not decided.

Any clue ?
