thanks JMR. all images were globally processed in aperture first, then in PS3 using unsharpen mask (20-50-0) and are 57 Mb each. when i exported them from aperture, i set it to 768 x 768 @ 72 dpi. so yes, they are much softer than the originals. i was concerned about total file size in the forums uploading process. any suggestions?

semi-pro. always always always RAW. and then i view / manage the images in aperture on a mac. from there, i can do anything to the image i want and i can still retain the digital negative. sometimes i bring the final image into photoshop to do minor adjustments to a specific area.
also been in the graphic arts business for 30 years. when you pre flight a file for printing, flightcheck will always flag a jpg. printers / rip software hate jpgs. they're only good for web work. shooting in RAW and adjusting in aperture (or lightroom) will give you the best of both worlds.

What was it like in the good old days?

i borrowed my father's ansco when i traveled europe in 1969. i was hooked.
in 1972, i went to college with my first pentax spotmatic and a roloflex twin lens with a zeis lens. shot 2 1/4" black and white landscapes in lancaster, pa and college rock concerts with 35 mm slide film. in 1980, i got a MX, built a darkroom and started shooting magazine covers. i loved processing and printing my work. dodging, burning, seeing the image come up in the developer was euphoric. (ok, maybe it was the chemicals)
incorporated digital later with a kodak point n shoot but i still favored film. when i developed my digital darkroom i switched to digital imagery completely and bought an istDL. the choice was easy. i have always been a fan of pentax and i had all the lenses. last fall i bought a K10 and upgraded all my lenses to digital.
in the beginning, it took more time to capture an image. studying the light and composition. metering the shot - several times. then, wondering if you got it. when i switched to digital, things began to speed up...maybe a little too fast. now i try to slow it down, really enjoy the surroundings. even spending some time in the moment before i take the camera out of the bag. using a tripod again and metering my shot has also helped. taking ten shots instead of a hundred. i also take my time processing and printing my own work too (in the digital darkroom). my goal is two prints per week. so far so good.

i have to agree. bought a manfrotto for backpacking. carbon fiber, 4 section. paid good money. wasn't tall enough...had to bend over all the time to take a shot. ended up buying a gitzo GT2531LV. ok, it was a lot of money but worth every penny. i backpack it everywhere and never regret having it. the leveling function is the best.
btw- i still use the manfrotto for my macro work.

thank you (all) for your quick replies. i will begin to search out additional info on the web, contact a good attorney, and research the point people with each band. yes it seems daunting but well worth the effort. be well.

i have hundreds of slides from the 50 plus concerts that i attended and photographed in the 70's and 80's. i recently bought a nikon coolscan to convert these images to digital files that i can manipulate and print on my epson R1800. i have a gallery show scheduled in november 2009, that i will be presenting (and selling) limited editions to the general public. i also have plans to offer these images to stock photo houses, the music publishing industry, poster publishers and card companies.
i believe as the photographer, i have the copyrights to the images, but what about the performers rights? some of these performers are dead (lowell george, warren zevon, rory gallagher), so contacting them directly is out of the question. others are still alive (kiss, jackson browne, lou reed, charlie daniels, kansas, ELP, hall n oates, just to name a few) i want to do this right so any suggestions, links or experiences in this area would be greatly appreciated. thanks (in advance).
