Has my DA 18-135 WR gone kaput?

I’ve had my DA 18-135 WR for a couple years now, and it has been my go to lens in most instances. Recently I spent a day shooting with it and there were no issues. When I got home I took it out to shoot some more, and to my dismay, the lens would not focus. Everything was out of focus, regardless of how I turned the focus ring or used autofocus. I’ve found that when I orient the lens vertically (front element facing the sky) the focus works again, but when returned to a level position, the focus once again stops working. Something sounds slightly loose when I turn the lens upside down and right side up again. I am just wondering if it can be amended or if its time to replace this lens.

I made some improvements based off suggestions by Sandy on the shot I took for August 7th.
Before

Untitled by whales0ng, on Flickr

After

Untitled 2 by whales0ng, on Flickr

I increased the aperture to f16 and a shutter speed of 30 seconds along with setting ISO to 100. Now if only that white paper hadn't snuck into the background :hmm:

I didn't have any of my camera gear with me but had to capture this picture of these two lovebirds. The school day had just ended and it had begin to snow. The best camera is the one that is with you :)

Decided on a Pentax-A 50mm F2, likely to be on my K30. I'll try to hold up through the entire month, though school kicks in mid-August ;)

Decided to dust off my Pentax WG-1 GPS to take some pictures. The first is of my sunglasses. Every sunny day, which there has been quite a few of this year, these are over my eyes. The second picture is the view from the main road I take into town. The last one is of a pair of seals returning home (this was taken with a Casio Exilim)

The 18-135mm was my first and only lens for quite sometime. I still don't have enough glass to make a comparison, but I can say that I have really enjoyed this lens. Love the versitility, from wide angle to telephoto all in one lens, plus it's weather sealed :) Here are some shots from a trip to Duluth, MN I took a few months back.

Happened to be at the beach as the sun was setting, sillouetting Mt. Augustine with an orange sky. Mt. Augustine is one of Alaska's many active volcanoes and recently erupted, sending ash in the direction of my home town. The day after the eruption ash fell from the sky like snow, coating cars and storefronts.

Hi all
I've loved photography since I was a kid. My mom would let me use her K1000, her "ultimate field camera" which she used while she was an archeologist, on sunny days and around the house. I myself now have a WG-1 GPS, which I got for Christmas a few years back, and a K-01 which I really enjoy. Anyway, hello fellow Pentaxians, so far this forum has given me a ridiculous amount of information, most of it being very helpful.

Axel

Single photo with tweaks made in iPhoto. My dream as a child was to have a hedgehog, which came true, though sadly after 5 happy years she passed away. This photo is dedicated to her, Coco.
