Jatrax, I may be a long lost cousin in law of yours and I happen to have a birthday this year. If you feel you need to get a good bargain and give it to someone, I would be very grateful. I'll even send you cookies on your birthday! I'll even let you keep the lenses! Whaddya say? If we go back far enough I am sure we must be related!

Your possible cousin,

Jon

I agree with Adam regarding not everybody wanting a full-frame. Yes, there are people like this, me included, who would rather carry around something smaller, lighter, and less expensive that can still take remarkable photos. Unless I'm going to make a life-sized print, APS-C is the way to go for most applications. I still think that most (not all) people who lust after full-frame and froth at the mouth about Pentax lagging in this area aren't really exceptional photographers, but rather looking for the biggest toy/bragging rights. This type typically spends more time whining on these forums than actually making photos.

You'll be happy to hear that I've found a fix/workaround for this issue and I just implemented it. There should no longer be a limit on the number of likes you can issue per user, and BTW, I wouldn't let this technical glitch ruin your day ;)

That's typical of every forum on the internet. Usually, the unwritten intrawebs protocol is to post "hey, I like that but I have to spread reps around". Also, there is very little 'freedom' on a privately run website. FWIW, I gave you reps just based on how bizarre your post is.

I need a tripod for my k30

Last week I did some tests on a tripod for another thread here - difficult shots with Pentax -M 1:4 200mm on a small M43 sensor in a cold breeze.
I was quite astonished- that the dominant factor in sharpness was the tripod.
Camara & lens settings were same,
Here is an old Velbon light duty tripod

Whatever you buy, make sure it's compatible with Arca-Swiss quick release plates. That will save you a lot of headache later on.

Also, remember that the best tripod is the one you have at hand. A tripod, no matter how costly, is useless if you're are in the field and it's at home.

I have 2 carbon-fiber tripods: a Benro C1190T (2 lb. 10 oz., including the Benro B0 head) and a Hakuba HG-6230C (4 lb 11 oz, including the Kirk head). Guess which one stays at home more often! The Benro can handle a K7 with vertical grip + Pentax DA* 60-250mm + Pentax 1.7X AFA with no problem, as long as I don't extend the smallest section of the legs.

Last year, on a trip to Boston, I put the Benro in my wife's suitcase, she didn't notice it until unpacking at the hotel.

Sometimes I carry the Benro C1190T inside the backpack.

Dealing With Other Photographers

I agree to an extent, but this is more about being considerate. I have no time for "Pros" that are rude either - sorry to any pros that think that they're more important. But consideration of others is something that can't be mandated. Stepping in front of someone that is ALREADY there and set up is rude - period. In that case the newer photog needs to fine their own spot IMHO. I wouldn't step in front of a grandmom with a P&S and I don't expect others to do that to me either - common (or not so common any more) courtesy.

As for being edged over - I guess it doesn't hurt that I'm 6'3" and have been told I can "look mean". I had one try to edge me over once - once. ;)

portrait lens

Almost everything in portrait comes down to "how far away are you from the subject?" If you knew that, or a range, or something like "in my house", you could then pick a focal length to match the shots you want to take (like head or full body). Then you could estimate how much depth of field you need, plug that into a calculator and see what the lens's maximum aperture needs to be. You could use a zoom lens that covers that range to test your theory, if you have one. It would narrow down your choices a lot.

I chose the opposite path, buy a lot of stuff and see what works for me. These are all my opinions, not facts. I like the 50mm to 135mm range.
50mm - I like the Pentax-A 50mm f1.4, but just about any 50 you like will work.
55mm - The Takumar 55mm f1.8 formula is similar from the Auto Takumar through SMC Pentax 55mm, f1.8 or f2.0, and inexpensive too.
58mm - If I had the money and opportunity, I'd get the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4. I have a CZJ Biotar 58mm f2 and there are Helios copies, but I don't like these for portrait.
70mm, 77mm - I would buy the Pentax lenses at these lengths but they cost actual money.
85mm - Many beautiful lenses at 85mm, three to five times what I'd pay for them. Go with Adam's suggestion here, the Samyang-made 85mm f1.4 sold under many brands, the best value.
90mm - I like the Tamron 90mm f2.5 Adaptall macros here, but there are a lot of 90mm macros that are close in performance.
100mm - A lot of 100mm f2.8 macros will do a good job here. The Pentax-M 100mm f2.8 works well too for non-macro use.
105mm - The Takumar 105mm f2.8 formula is good.
120mm - I like the Pentax-M 120mm f2.8 but it's hard to find.
135mm - SMC Pentax 135mm f2.5 is my favorite here. A lot of lesser 135s are sharp enough in the center to be fine for portraits too, and cheaper than the Pentax.

It's worth getting the KA mount because you have more flexibility with flash, but a lot of these lenses only come in manual-aperture versions.

I have one or more lenses at 50, 55, 58, 85, 90, 100, 120 and 135. I can't really pick a favorite but my best portraits are at 50mm, mostly with the Pentax-A 50mm f1.4.

NR on K-30

For JPEGs, NR does a pretty good job at high ISOs, so I would actually recommend enabling it at ISO 3200 or above. Auto mode should work just fine, but if you decide to use another setting then I'd recommend medium or low, but not high as it goes overboard.

Why so many K-30's up for sale already?

I just checked out the buy/sell (the first 2 pages) and kijiji and I don't see even one K-30 for sale second hand. That kind of negates the relevance of the thread. it should be made invisible, then reactivated once a few pop up for sale somewhere. It's hard to have a reasonable discussion if the underlying premise isn't true.

Pentax SMC P-DA 40mm F2.8 Limited Lens for $272.00

On Crutchfield's website, if you click on the details tab and look at "whats in the box" it says "Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 XS".

I'm sure that it would take good photos to, it is just not a "limited lens". The "whats in the box also has a link to the owners manual that says that it is the XS model, not the limited model.

The model number for the limited is Pentax 21550.

Why worry about what other people are doing? Take the camera out...learn to use it and have fun with it. If you encounter problems then post those issues here so you can hopefully get them resolved. :):)
