Sorry to hear you're having the same issue. They replaced the camera entirely. I don't recall what they told me the actual problem was, but it was definitely sensor-related.
If you think it would help, I could try to find the ticket number.

Just found this thread after reviewing PhotoPlus floor plan for tomorrow and not finding Pentax. Frankly, there's no excuse for not being at this show, and I believe the absence will just reinforce to third-party manufacturers that Pentax is not worth supporting.
Disappointed.

Yes, props to the repair center, although I'll note that I really had to push them to go the extra mile. Lesson: Don't just mail off your camera and wait - call and email and get someone on the phone so that you can fully explain the issues, if they're not obvious.

An update from my end: Pentax service in Chandler, Arizona, couldn't replicate the problem until they put the camera in the fridge overnight, then sure enough, it froze up the next morning during testing. They are replacing the camera.

I've had this issue as well, but always attributed it to over-tightening on my part. The screwdriver works well, but really I just need to remember to take it easy when putting it on.

So, just with an update to the original topic - I shipped the K5 IIs to Pentax's repair facility in Chandler, AZ. About two days after FedEx reported it was delivered, I got a phone call from the technician there, and we had about a half hour conversation about the issue. They were not having any success replicating it, and were about to ship it back to me with a firmware update only.
Since the "freezing" and blue/purple lines on images tended to occur while shooting outdoors, in cold (35 degrees F or colder) weather, and since the camera was in AZ, where certainly it's just a bit warmer, the tech agreed to place the camera in the refrigerator overnight. Sure enough, when they tested the next morning, they had the same problem I did.
They are now replacing the camera, much to my relief.

Hey, this is very similar in some respects to what what I reported on this thread.
While you don't mention blue/purple lines on your images, my camera would also freeze at colder temps - 35 degrees, typically wet/windy/snowy. Would only reset by removing battery. It is on its way to Pentax service in Chandler, AZ, after the customer support team indicated (after viewing the images) that it's probably a sensor problem.
I never experienced the same issue indoors, although I've done more shooting outside after getting the camera in January, and of course here in the Northeast we've had little to no warm weather the past few months.

Well, a month later, and it's now occurring on multiple cards. Contacted Pentax support, sent them images, and they think it's a sensor issue. So I just shipped off my K5 IIs to Arizona, and already miss her. Will let y'all know what happens.

Thanks everyone. At first I thought it had occurred on two separate cards, but I think it may have been the same one. SanDisk Ultra SDHC 8GB 30MB/s.
Shooting RAW. Will attempt to replicate on a different card, no luck replicating on same card or different card yet.

Hi -
I know there have been some discussions about the K5 freezing. Some have returned the camera, others have seen the issue disappear after a while.
Here's what's happening with mine. My understanding that most of the reports of freezing have occurred while shooting in AF-C. Mine has occurred in AF-S, while shooting relatively rapidly (although not more than say 2FPS).
I start getting blue and other color lines both vertically and horizontally. If I notice it immediately, I stop shooting, and after a few seconds, it seems to correct itself. But if I'm not chimping and keep shooting, not realizing there's an issue, the camera freezes. Power off, doesn't matter. I have to remove the battery and restart, which then resolves the issue.
I'm attaching a sample image. Is this what's considered "sensor stain"? If so, with body still under warranty, should I return for service? I purchased directly from Pentax.
I should also note that in both instances where this happened, it was in cold (15-30F degrees) outdoor temps, with rain/mist.

Thanks everyone for the responses. My first instinct is to go with the IIs, but budget is a key consideration, and I just found this thread pointing to a tax-free $684 K5.
Hmm...I guess there are worse problems to have.

New to the forum, currently shooting with a K7, which I love, except for the low light AF and high-ISO noise.
Looking to upgrade to a K5, K5II, or K5IIs. Yes, plenty of discussion here (my eyes are bleeding reading about moire or lack thereof), and I've read countless reviews here and elsewhere on all three models.
My basic takeaway is this - as an upgrade from the K7, which should solve the AF and noise issues, the K5 seems like the best bet, at a street price of $749US (body only). A great price for a great camera. With the K5II at about $1200, and IIs at $1300, it seems like the most cost efficient option.
However, I suddenly have the opportunity to pick up the K5 II for only $849, or the IIs for $949. Again, body only.
What would you do? Particularly interested in thoughts from previous K7 or K5 owners. Thanks in advance!

Hey -
Finally moved from lurker to member. My eyes are bleeding from reading all the threads on the K5 II and IIs - so much that I'll be seeing moire (or lack thereof) in my sleep tonight.
I'm currently shooting with a K7 and looking to upgrade to one of the three K5 models, still unsure which one. Love my K7 but the poor high ISO performance is a big issue, as I'm shooting more portraits and events in low-light conditions.
