Looking for a medium zoom lens f2.8 to pair with K3 III for basketball photography

Exactly - I run into this for indoor sports and also my soccer photos like you've shown. I take a ton of photos - all volunteer, trying to get as many players as possible, so I don't want to take the time to edit them all so I do my best to get the exposure as best I can

For basketball, I often sit on the baseline underneath the hoop so the 24-70mm range is perfect for my crop sensor. I'm trying to figure out if one of the Sigmas or the Pentax would be better.

I shoot high school basketball games and currently have the Tamron 17-50/2.8 and the Pentax 70-200/2.8 married with my K3 III. I'm looking for a little more range than I have with the Tamron. There are a couple 24-70mm/2.8 Sigma lenses and the Pentax D FA 24-70/2.8 lens as well.

Has anybody used any of these for sports photography or low light conditions where you have to shoot wide open?

I'm looking for good autofocus and sharpness at 2.8.

I thought that was just the part number for the cable. So that's the part number for the LCD screen? Do you know if can be ordered anywhere? thanks

Can the LCD screen be ordered or do you have a part number? Mine is cracked making the camera pretty much unusable and sending off to Pentax for repair is ridiculously expensive. thanks

Trouble manipulating Pentax 70-200 zoom ring for sports photography

I just purchased the Pentax 70-200mm 2.8 lens. I switched from the Sigma 70-200mm.

The zoom ring on the Sigma is close to the camera body and can be manipulated with just my thumb easily. So I can stabilize the lens with my left hand while just using my thumb to adjust the zoom ring.

The zoom ring on the Pentax is toward the end of the lens and is more difficult to manipulate (plus it's heavier). I can't just use my thumb to adjust the zoom while steading the lens with the rest of my left hand. I have to take my hand away from the body and adjust the zoom with my thumb and fingers.

Does anybody else use the Pentax for sports photography? I'm really struggling with the switch from the Sigma. I'm really having a hard time adjusting the zoom quickly and without the entire camera moving around. I'm using it on a K3 III so maybe the smaller camera makes it more difficult. I also use back button focusing. If I used the shutter button for focusing I could have a slightly more solid grip with my right hand. I'm not a huge guy so maybe I'm just too wimpy for this lens...

I'd rather not use a monopod because that really limits your ability change your positioning.

Any thoughts suggestions?

---------- Post added 01-04-24 at 05:14 PM ----------

I put the tripod foot on it and that might help a little bit as I can rest my palm on that and adjust the zoom ring with my thumb and finger.

---------- Post added 01-04-24 at 05:18 PM ----------

I wish I could manipulate the zoom ring with just my thumb bit has a lot of resistance. Is that normal or is there something wrong with my lens.

Thank you! Yep that is exactly what was happening. I just tried taking a shot with back button and shutter button pessed and the red AF indicators show up when reviewing the photo in the LCD screen. And thanks Peter for clarifying my question.

Thanks - she is a wonderful young woman but grew up too fast for me! Unfortunately she thinks her dad knows how to take portraits because he has a decent camera! :D I really appreciate the feedback.

I don't know if a cracker is a good or bad image. :D The reason I like a wider open aperature is to get the background out of focus. f/4.0 would obvioulsy help with my focus issues. I tried putting on my ancient manual Pentax nifty fifty f/2.0 lens from my first Pentax K1000. I really had a hard time focusing with that! Here are a few uneditied photos using that lens. My daughter really likes the 3/4 body shot but focus definitely seems soft. I was trying to see how the photos would look with some back lighting from the sun but not too happy with those. The one with our dog Bandit seems like the best focused one. So much multiasking in your brain when doing portraits!

Would you use live view with subject recognition? Manual exposure mode? I was shooting TaV because of my sports photography background but that doesn't make sense for portaits as I need to keep the ISO down.

Here are a couple example photos from this morning. I haven't done any editing. But I'm thinking a faster lense with a shallower depth of field will give me a creamery bokeh. Am I wrong on that? These were taken with my Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 on my K3 III.

The last two photos were taken at f2.8. Not sure why that doesn't show up in the exif info

One of the videos. The issue just to be clear is when you're viewing images on the camera's LCD screen. You can hit the info button until you see the AF pattern. His show in red, where the camera's AF points were. Mine are all white.

I've seen youtube videos that Kobe has online where he reviews the focus points that the AF focused on. THey show up in red in the display. When I'm viewing my photos all of the photo points are white. Is there a setting in the camera I need to turn on to display the focus points?

I was trying to understand if a certain focal length would be better with respect to background blur. So with your example, I assume that the closer shot with the 50mm lens would have more blur because of the 1:1 ratio vs the 4:1 ratio? If this is true, then you would think that a shorter focal length would be better. Of course you have to take into account how close you want to be to your subject and not introducing any kind of weird distortion with a wide angle lens.

Lots of good information. Thanks. I should have also said that I am taking all outdoor portraits. Some will be just single subject (my daughters) and others for like homecoming and prom shots will be small groups. And again - all outdoors. I'm thinking that maybe one of the 50s (or the 55) will also be a better overall prime for other photography as opposed to the 77.

For this potential lens purchase, I started researching DOF, crop sensors vs FF, perspective, etc, etc and realized how little I know about photography and how confusing it can be as well...

I have the Pentax K3 III and the only decent lens I have to take portraits is my Tamron 17-50 2.8 or my Sigma 20-200 2.8. I'm looking at getting a prime lens to get a shallower depth of field. I'm only taking photos of my own kids (senior portratis, prom and homecoming). So i'm not needing something for professional work and not interested in spending a lot of money - maybe in the $300-$500 range.

The shortest I'd want to go is 50mm. In reading the review of the nifty fifties and the 55mm lens it appears that they are all soft at wide aperature which seems to defeat the purpose of purchasing one of those lenses. But maybe they're sharp enough for portaits? Or maybe there's a third party lens? Or maybe I just stick with what I have and just place more distance between my subject and background to achieve decent separation?

Thanks! I absolutely need to the wider aperture for my night games, in addition I really want that shallow depth of field so the players stand out. I definitely will have a lot less photos in focus, but the ones that are in focus stand out because of the shallow depth of field.

Back to the Drumstick box it is! :)

I still don't understand this backfocus vs front focus and I think my thinking is backwards from what it is. Does focus point mean the point the camera was focused on and then if the photo was sharp behind the target (farthest away?) that means it's back focusing?

Examples work best for me. Let's say we have the angled ruler that's numbered from 1 - 10 and I focus my camera at 5 feet - right in the middle. 1 is closest to me and 10 is the farthest away. If the photo is sharp at 1 foot, is that front focusing because it's sharp in front of (closer to me) the spot that the camera was focused on?

I live in Oregon by the way. They'd melt if I tried shipping from here. I do have a brother in law in Missouri though. But if I asked him to deliver them, they probably wouldn't make it to your house...

Aha - so maybe backfocus means that camera focuses (or thinks it's focused) behind (further away) where the point is actually in focus?

Firstly, I really appreciate your help with this. At some point I'll see if I can try out my other lens.

I did refocus between each shot - what i was saying in my earlier post is that I didn't move my positioning when I changed focal length. I point my hand in front of the lens and hit the back button focus and then refocus on the subject. And Then I hit the button several times before releasing the shutter. I used the timer for the shots. And I did move a couple times for these shots.

Here are some additional photos I took using some measuring sticks. The yellow one is laying at an angle. I was focusing on the red cross hairs.

I don't think I understand what is meant by back or front focus. The images at 70mm for example, show that the shot is in focus closer to the camera. Does this mean it is back focusing? To me that would make more sense to say it is front focusing.

At 200mm, it looks like it's just soft - I can't tell if it's back or front focusing. Maybe I'm just not good enough to perceive slight variations in sharpness.

So if I corrected the lens for the shorter length, it will screw up the longer focal lengths correct? Is this something that can get sent somewhere to get fixed or is it just inherrent in the lens that I have?

I'll change the fstop up through f4.0 to see if there's a point where I'm comfortable with the sharpness. I'm not publishing any of these photos. I post them to an Amazon photo album where kids and parents can access them and often times they get posted to social media. I do take them in jpeg and RAW but only edit one if I have a really great shot that I want to highlight. I don't have time to edit all the photos and try to pretty them up. For kids and parents, it's much better than they'll ever see. With that said, I'd still like to figure this lens out and potentially look at the Pentax 70-200mm or the newer Sigma.

This time the order is not sequential by focal length. All photos are at f2.8 and ISO100. After all this work, you deserve to go get some drumsticks! I'd buy you the Costco jumbo box if you were in town!

I probably still didn't do things correctly...

I don't know what you mean by centering the focus with the AF fine adjust.

I used center focusing, on a tri-pod, low ISO and used the timer to advance the shutter. I was focusing on the box of drumsticks. It wasn't necessarily in the exact same spot as I changed focal lengths since I must have not been perfectly level with the subject and I didn't readjust the focus point after changing focal length. But it certainly was on the same plane.

I included f4.0 just so I could see the difference from f2.8.

I'm not sure what to make of what I have so far, other than it doesn't appear to be front or back focusing except at the 88mm focal length. And it seems soft at 2.8. I'm not experienced enough to know if the 4.0 shots are also soft. Or maybe I'm completely off base with everything and my testing still sucks...

Order of photos.

200mm 2.8
200mm 4.0
155mm 2.8
155 mm 4.0
88 mm 2.8
88 mm 4.0
