Outdoor portrait settings advice

I think I need to use the AE lock button. That way I can get the focus on her eyes and then set the exposure at that point using the AEL button, then I can compose the shot and take the photo. I tried it out taking a photo of a box with a picture on it that had light and dark spots. Using the AEL button holds the exposure for all subsequent photos until you hit the button again. I'm guessing my exposure problems were related to her black shirt.

And I appreciate all of the comments which will be helpful as well.

Help understanding autofocus settings on the KP

Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm trying to understand the autofocus settings in the menu (AF Active Area) vs the settings that can be changed by the AF Mode button.

For example, what's the difference if I have the AF Active Area set on "auto 27" and the AF Mode on "Spot" vs AF Active Area set on "Spot" (single dot icon) and AF Mode on "Spot"?

I have read the menu and I can't figure it out. Maybe because it's too late in the evening after a long work day...

I had already started reading this and it's very useful Kobie. Thanks! I just have to spend more time reading it and digesting it and practicing with different settings. So much to learn and not enough time. Here are a couple other photos just for the heck of it. What is annoying sometimes is that they don't think about us photographers with some of these fields. They have too much crap in the background like extra soccer goals or ugly chain link fences or very poor lighting or not to mention football yard lines on the pitch! :)

Here is a series of photos where the AFC did nicely on 5 consecutive photos.

Nope - just two photos in sequence. I tend to be a bit conservative with the shutter because it takes me forever to go through all of the photos and edit them. But on the flip side, I'm sure I miss out on some shots.

I used my new/used K3-III at a few high school soccer games. The first thing I noticed is that the larger body (compared to my KP) pairs nicely with my Sigma 70-200/2.8. I really like the grip on it. Here are the settings I was using for the soccer games:

Continuous auto focus
Altering the Auto Focus Active Area between Expanded Area Small, Select and Select(S)
AF Area Restriction = ON
1st frame action in AFC = Focus,
Action in AFC = auto
Hold AF Status = off
Action when AF fails = Drive Lens
AF Point Tracking = Type 1 (Uses the AF and AE sensor to track AF points)
Subject Recognition = ON,
AE Metering = Multi-Segment
Face Priority AE = On
Link AE and AF Point = ON

My first game was during a bright afternoon with plenty of light. I noticed a dramatic difference in the autofocus compared to my KP. I don't know how to describe it other than it felt like it was focusing more quickly which resulted in more keepers. The greater frame rate was noticeable as well. I have a lot of figuring out and testing to do with all the various settings. I'll have to keep notes on the settings I'm using to see if I can determine a difference. I didn't notice a difference with the changes in AF Active Area settings but it's hard to notice that kind of thing while shooting. I did have a few shots where the first frame was in focus and then the very next one in succession was out of focus. I assume with AFC it was hunting for focus and missed it but not sure why.

For the poorly lit night game it did have some troubles focusing, especially since our team jersey was black, but it was definitely better than the KP. The ISO got pretty high and there is visible noise in many of the photos. I think it partly depends on where on the field the photo is taken where there is better light and of course how close the subject is to me.

Below is an example of where the first photo was in focus but the next one was not. I'll include some other photos in the next post.

I get the flashing red light on my KP which is nice because it shows where the focus point is. But it must have to do with screen like you mentioned. So with the K3 III, there's a black square that shows what it's focusing on instead of the red square with the KP. Thanks for the info Kobie!

Help with soccer photos that aren't sharp

Attached are three photos of my daughter's soccer game friday evening and none of the photos are sharp. Is it because the ISO is fairly high on these - all above 1000. Is my lens not focusing sharply? Do I need to hire somebody to take photos for me because I suck at it??? Is there a way to test the lens for proper focusing? Shutter speed is 1250 for the evening shots (blue uniform). It's 2000 for the day time shot. Maybe the lens isn't sharp wide open?

I'm using a Pentax KP and a Sigma 70-200mm HSM II. It was in the evening just prior to the stadium lights coming on. I attached another one I took the previous week mid day for comparison.

Any help for this amateur would be greatly appreciated!

Basketball and Soccer Sports Photography Camera Body Recommendation

Thanks for the advice on the fine sharpening. I prefer jpegs for my sports photography because it's a lot of photos to go through and process. I've only started dabbling with RAW and post processing recently. My high school buddy started the On1 photo editing software so I've started using that recently. But it takes a lot of time to post process. I'm too busy driving kids around to soccer games and basketball games!

Thanks everyone. I ended up purchasing the KP with the 18-135 lens. The guy lived in Oregon so we were able to meet in person last night. I know the basics when it comes to photography but didn't play with much of the settings on my k30 so I'm going to have to become a KP student to figure out how to best use that camera. Should be fun!

I upgraded from my K30. I really consider myself still a novice even though I've dabbled in photography since I was a kid - started out with the K-1000. So I'll probably be on here asking all sorts of stupid questions. I just downloaded the 148 pg manual... I never played much with the settings on the K30 other than the basics like fstop, focus points and back button focus.

One question to start off: Does anybody shoot sports photography? Curious what focus settings people use or other settings I should be aware of. I shoot basketball and soccer (both my daughters play). I have a sigma 70-200mm 2.8 and a tamron 18-50 2.8. I got the 18-135 lens with the camera but not sure it will be fast enough inside for basketball. One thing I don't like so far is the location of the back button focus. Hopefully I can get used to it. It seems too high up for a comfortable position.

Happy to be part of the KP club. I live in the Salem, OR area BTW.
