Hi,
First thanks to all for entering this weeks competition andapologies for being late with the judging. I've really enjoyed looking at the various photos as they have rolled induring the week.
Judging has been hard as I'm stuck between those images thatshow the greatest negative impact and those that are the most aestheticallypleasing.
RollsUp - As others have said your image is probably theprettiest but in terms of impact it is just a single piece of rubbish, not thathumans waste in the ocean is not an issue!
K David - Your image I also found really attractive and I'vea personal fondness for the "branches reflected in lake" genre.
JensE - Opencast mining, what can you say about this. A scar on the planet that is kind of requiredto maintain the current pace of human development.
cmweier - A really strong image, loved the reflection of thered brick on the truck.
Bruce Clark - An interesting attempt to make the distastefultasteful. Also because there are two responsibilitieshere, the original person and since then it has been there a long time, thelack of a periodic clean-up by the local council.
Tessfully – It sounds like you live in a beautiful placethat many city dwellers would give a great deal to be able to experience on aregular basis. Strange then that the needto protect their environment is not appreciated, though it all has to be paid for of course.
Fg-one – Thanks for cheering us all up, both with your shotand pun!
Noelcmn – A tragedy for the bird concerned, sounds like theoutlook for the bird was not good.
Hattifnatt – This one has a real hint of death about!
SpecialK – You have second place and I was very close togiving you first. I really despiselittering / fly-tipping, the complete lack of personal responsibility and ethicsshown by the people who do this really makes me wonder if we can ever transformour society into fit custodians of the planet. This needs to happen from the ground up and with people like this aroundwe’ve no chance.
Tamia – I’ve given you first place for what is a very strong image that has a strange morbid aesthetic, it has had me coming back several times to work out how the body parts fit together. What animal is that with the large fingers on it’s claw?

Welcome to Weekly Challenge #340 Humanity's Negative Impact on Earth.
Note that some of the images posted are quite brutal. Also (thanks noelcmn) note that I've spelt the title wrong, I of course mean humankind not the academic subjects!
In general we try and take photos that are aesthetically pleasing, to our own eye at least. I'd like to see shots that are perhaps not beautiful in the traditional sense but demonstrate the negative impact of humanity on our home.

A few sentences to put the photo in context would be good as well.

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.
The Challenge will run until midnight February 6th, 2016, whichever time zone you are in.
Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera (film or digital) can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

This is one of my favourite shots, it is of one my favourite places to take photos (search for images of colourscape) and of my daughter, my favourite subject matter. I've shown the picture in it's original form and after I have pp'ed it into a piece of art that is now on my wall.
I always think of it as my daughter considering one of the many possible futures she has in front of her.

Took this image of some cranes with the estuary of the Thames behind, love all the shapes, patterns and textures.
What do you think?
I guess the only thing that needs doing I think is to edit out the lamp post on the right? Not sure my PP skills are there...

Hi, Went to Colourscape (their gallery Gallery of images of all of many of the major Colourscape structures.) this w/e and I've been playing around with some of the photos, thought I'd get a view on this one. Obviously I've had a bit of a go in PSE and I'm pretty happy with the result, although given masses more time and patience I'd remove the people in the background. I've attached the original photo too so you can see where I started from.
Its the second one, but hopefully that's obvious!
As ever any comments welcomed.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, I've done very little PP on my original shot. Like the second one a lot where you can see the island much more clearly and like nomad said being able to see the whole boat really makes a difference.
Time for more of play!

I can kind of see what you are saying about the bottom half being uninteresting but for me I like this because of it makes the photo more of a minimalist abstract scene rather than just a pretty picture of a yacht. I do have a couple of shots from the same session which I guess are more interesting but for me they have something missing that the first shot has.
I thought I'd share the shot of the stones too, as for me it has the "thing" that the first shot has but the others don't. I guess sometimes the act of being in the place and taking the photos really colours your view on what the right photo that captures that moment is.

There is a big city behind the island (Marmaris) which is what is making that bit more noisy / brighter than expected. I suppose I could sort that out with some PP

Thanks for all the pointers, I bought a
Calumet Pro Series 740 Medium Backpack
in the end as I was looking for more of a transporting from A to B type solution as apposed to a holster. Seems to keep the lens in firm grip in the padding so I'm not worried about stressing the lens mount.

Hi,
I'm keen to be able to carry in a bag my Kr with Sigma 150-500 attached. Struggling to find a bag but that is a different story.
When I bought the Sigma I was strongly cautioned to carry / support the camera / lens by the lens since it being so much heavier would damage the camera if I put the weight on the camera. This all makes sense.
Using the same logic is it a bad idea to carry them around / travel connected? Or are most camera bag tightly padded enough that the lens and camera won't twist and subject the mount to stress?

Hi All,
Thanks for all the comments.
My laptop (windows) is out on a stand all the time so my viewing position of the screen only moves by how much I'm slouching.
I went through the calibration piece in windows and made a marginal change to the gamma, other than that everything seemed correct to me. I don't see an issue when looking at other photos so I don't think it is the screen. I don't really understand how some on the thread can say that the ducks white bits are right. The second is probably too dark because I dropped the exposure until I thought the white parts look right, I need to do more sophisticated PP to get it right.
I guess I'll go with reducing the exposure in camera a little and see how I get on.

I'll check out how to calibrate my monitor tomorrow, time for bed here.
Pretty sure I'm getting blown highlights on a regular basis, I see 255 / 255 /255 a lot on anything that is approaching white.

Well it sounds like it is me or my laptop then...I've now got the brightness turned right down (it was only a couple of clicks up to start with) and I'm in dimly light room.
Here is another pair. In the top image my daughters hood has the yellow dots that are in it blown from the RAW which I have tinkered with a little on the 2nd image.
Maybe I just like the darkness! I don't think I have any exposure compensation turned on, if I do it is by accident!

Hi,
I seem to have an issue with using my Sigma 150-500 and overexposing on my K-r.
It seems that virtually every RAW needs to taken down 1-1.5 stops. Attached are the JPEG from camera and the RAW which I've reduced the exposure by 1.5 (both straightened and cropped in PSE).
Just want to confirm is this is real and not my monitor or preference of how the photo should look.
If it is a real effect are there any thoughts about what I can do about it?
I'm assuming it is to do with my metering mode (although it does seem to happen on every photo, maybe when just when Im in AP though). Can anyone recommend a link to give me some detail on that?

Just thought I'd close this off by a link to a thread where I posted links to the photos on flickr after I'd finished pp.
(is there such a thing?? I have to get better at that it soaked up loads of time!!)
I ended up deciding that all the photos were over exposed (not sure why, would it just be the white head driving that). I processed the RAWs using the Pentax photo utility, adjusted the exposure down a notch and a half, set burn to 50 and upped the luminosity of the blues. Then just cropped in PSE8.
Anyway thanks for the pointers from everyone above, helped we figure out what to do to get the images looking better

Hi,
After some pointers on what I was doing wrong, was out in Hyde Park last weekend and Spring was obviously in the air (finally).
Took many photos of Coots fighting, on several of the photos the focus is just off and seems to be picking up the foreground.
I think there were two things I could have done to fix this.
Faster shutter - I don't think its this as the photos are out of focus rather than blurred.
Change the AF mode so that it is more concentrated in the middle of the lens. I think this is probably it but any advice on exactly how I should set it up. I know I could RTFM (I have btw) but I'm struggling to match the technical descriptions to real world applications.
Any other pointers?
Also the Coots bald patch appears gleamingly over exposed in all the photos, I can probably clean this up in PP but is there anything I could have done in camera to stop this from happening? Did I need to change the white balance?
Photo taken in AP mode with my Kr and Sigma 150-500.
First photo has the focus problem and second doesn't.
(Also just realised I've posted this in the wrong forum, apologies! Move to the critique one if that's where it goes)
