How would you change Pentax's K-7 DSLR?

I would put in a powerful enough processor and enough memory so that you could buy, download and install imaging applications in to the camera. Applications like proper HDR with control over the merging process. Applications like full on pano stitching, improved image editing, directory control so that I can have the camera put pano images in to a pano directory, hdr images in to an hdr directory, etc. These directories would be choosable via a button on the camera.

I woudl put on a 4-inch swivel LCD screen of the highest resolution and color depth currently available.

I would improve the video so that the camera would auto-focus and meter as the video was being shot. I would include a nice little stereo microphone in the box and remove the mono-one from the body.

I would make the LCD screen a touch screen and design the cameras interface and OS to make the best possible use of this. This would remove the need for so many physical buttons on the camera (they could be on the screen) and this would allow for a much larger LCD screen.

I would develop new battery technology for it so that you got 5 times the life from a charge which would make the more powerful processory, LCD screen and touch screen interface possible.

I would open the application development to third parties and setup an App store ala Apple.

I would offer user kits where they user chooses up to three Pentax lenses that they can buy along with the body and get a nice discount (like rebate amount discounts) I would also allow them to get accessories with the kit at discounted prices like flashes, remote releases, tripods, etc. The more the buy with your kit the better your price. All Pentax lenses and flashes would be available to choose from as well as third party items (a more limited selection would be fine for the third party items.)

I would boost the sensor resolution to 24.6MP while developing new technology both in the sensor and making use of the more powerful processor to handle any increase in noise (a noise reduction application like Noise Ninja for the Pentax could be an option.)

Item for Sale
Pentax ist DS - Infrared Only Converted - with 18-55 Kit Lens

Asking Price
$450.00

Item Description
This is a very very rare camera. This is a used but in excellent condition Pentax *ist DS (6.1MP) camera that has been converted to infrared only (no lens filters needed).

It takes wonderful pictures (see samples below). It comes with the body, 18-55mm kit lens, owners manual, software disc. This is all that is included!

The only issue with it is that during the conversion the switch for going from auto focus to manual focus stopped working so it is auto focus only. It may be possible to fix this switch but since I never used manual focus I didn't worry about it. Everything else works and as I said it takes wonderful infrared shots.

I am asking $450 for the camera (PayPal only) plus $20 for priority shipping. USA buyers only.

This camera is used and in excellent condition, the lens is perfect with no scratches or other issues. However, I am selling this AS-IS and without warranty from me of any kind.

If your interested let me know.

What about the 18-50 Sigma. Is 2.8 fast enough for low light? That and the macro feature is why I bought it, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I know the 1.4 is probably best but I am worried about depth of field.

Since a tripod is a no go even if they allowed it I am going to be pushing my mom in a wheel chair so I need to keep things light weight.

I am going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in a week and would like to take low-light indoor shots while there. I would like a really good lens for my Pentax K20D, something that is fast (focusing), sharp and can work in low-light without flash (flash can cause issues with some of the sea critters.)

What would you recommend. I would like to spend as little as possible and would like to carry just one lens. A nice modest zoom range would be nice. Wide to...

I currently have a Pentax 18-250, 10-17, 18-55, 50 1.4 and a Sigma 18-50 f2.8.

Doesn't glow in the dark require a light to shine on it first? If not then that would be fine.

As for the on/off switch yes that would have to be a must. I wouldn't mind the lights be run off a second smaller battery like a rechargable AAA.

I would like to see them add back lit buttons as well as a back lite button on/off button for those of us that do low-light/no-light photography. Right now finding the right button in the dark is very much hit and miss.

K20D: Do You Guys Really use 14.6

The resolution any more isn't so much about detail. It is about being able to do extreme cropping and still have enough image data to do large prints. If you can use the entire image you can do very nice 13x19-inch prints with an 8 or 10MP camera. However, since I can't find a zoom lens in the range I want, the size I want, the price I want and the quality I want having 14.6MP with a 250mm lens means I can get the shots I want, but I have to extreme cropping and if I want to print them large I need all of the resolution I can get. For me MP will stop being important when you can get a 25 to 30MP camera for $1500. This with the cropping I do and the 13x19" consumer grade photo printers will give me everything I could ask for.

Yes, it was worth it. The lower noise was worth the cost of the switch. I like doing existing light shots and low light shots and long exposure shots and the lower noise is very nice.

I also like to do extreme cropping and so that 4.5MP resolution increase was another big plus for me. The fact they made such a large jump and got the noise level down is amazing.

The live view was something I was interested in but turned out to be a lame junk feature. Poorly implemented. It will be a very long time before I ever consider this feature again in my upgrade decision.

Updated info on removing the Pentax IR filter for Astro and IR imaging

Jim Chen will convert Pentax dSLR cameras to IR only. I know he did mine, the first one he did. I told him he could try to convert it and if it didn't work he would owe me nothing. It worked great. Now I have more use for the old *ist. I don't know what he charges as since he was experimenting he didn't charge me.

Digital Infrared at Jim Chen photography

In my opinion you want the IR filter on the sensor and not on the lens. First the filters are cheap and you would need one for each lens you want to use at least for the ones that have different thread sizes. Not all lenses have threads (Pentax 10-17 fisheye being one and it is awesome for IR).

Also, the filter on the lens can cause exposure and focusing issues. Finally whatever you use you want to set a custom white balance aiming the camera at something green (like grass, or green paper or fabric) and this will compensate for the red cast.

If you don't want to do a custom white balance the auto color feature in Photoshop gives a very nice color rendition. Also, before you convert to black and white play around with swapping the R, G and B channels around, you can get some very nice coloration's that way as well.

Finally, in case anything is thinking it. You can't fake an IR image using software or plug-ins. It is strictly a photographic thing that must be done when taking the photo. Some plug-ins try, none of them pull it off.

One more thing. Digital Infrared is the most fun you can have with a camera. It can turn the most mundane thing in to something really incredible. It also makes the best black and whites. Keep in mind that man made things don't change much when shot in infrared. But, when you include lots of natural things like trees, bushes, grass, etc you get awesome. It also brings out the skies.

reeftool, no body is blaming walmart for all that is wrong in the world. We do blame them for their poor treatment of their employees. For bring in cheap chinese crap causing not only US businesses to either scale back which costs jobs or to go out of business. Walmarts bottom line is to pay as little for stuff as possible, sell it for as much as possible so that they can make as much as possible. They could care less about what they do to anyone else, they only care about themselves and that is it. That is what people blame walmart for.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe you are able to hold the camera steady. I have a friend that can get tack sharp shots hand-held with no shake reduction at 1 second. He is 92 and I suspect he has figured out a way to bring on a temporary form of rigamortise to do it. But, he does it. :)

K20D 1.01 firmware update broke iphoto 08' PEF support
Posted By Robert Barnett
Replies: 40
RiceHigh, that is the thing though and part of my point. Had Pentax said in the release notes for the firmware that they did indeed make these changes and had they notified all of the software companies on the planet that support Pentax K20D raw files of the change, you all would still be sitting in an empty field here. Why? Because look how quickly most of these software companies update their products. Adobe currently is the only company that comes out with timely updates and that is once a quarter. Look how long it took Corel, ACD Systems, and others to add support for the K10D let alone the K20D. One company DxO to come out with an update that supports the K10D. In fact they just recently added support for the K10D's DNG files. So in the end even if Pentax had went out of their way by doing the whole notification thing it would not have made one bit of difference.

You can't tell me that all of the companies who's products don't now work with the K20D's raw files because of these changes are going to be updated any time soon. This should be a very small change, but you watch Apple will take weeks or months, DxO probably not until the next major update and so on. Adobe is the only company that seems to be dedicated to getting new cameras supported in a consistent and timely manor.

So in the end who's fault is it? Is it Pentax's fault for bothering to update and tweak their products? If it is maybe Pentax should just not do firmware updates at all. After all any change they make could cause a problem for a third party developer. Or is it Apple and the others that A) support RAW formats in a such a way that even minor changes cause them to break and B) at best take weeks or months or longer to support new cameras.

I submit that it isn't Pentax. If Adobe can add raw support for the K20D that didn't break with this new firmware update then so could everyone else. That makes it very clear that the problem lies with Apple and the other software companies. Now if Adobe was broken too, then you might be able to blame Pentax. But, that isnt' what happened.

Also, I would like to point out that other companies implementation of raw support is so flawed that their software doesn't support DNG files from any camera until they add support for that cameras propritary raw format. This is NOT how DNG is supposed to work, Adobe has made that clear and in fact before Adobe supported the K20D's PEF files it worked fine with the K20D's DNG files right out of the box. This is another indication that the other companies are doing a very poor job. Again, not Pentax's problem.
