Unless you shoot only one type of photography, for example landscapes, using a single system can be restrictive. I shoot wildlfe/birds, landscapes, street, some portraits, and do a lot of hiking and travel photography. Also sometimes videos. I used practically every digital system since the nineties. Over the past four or five years, I decided to use only lighter systems so I now use these:
- Pentax APSC; KP & K-70
- Sony a6000
- Panasonics GX85/80
- Ricoh GRii
Each where I find works best for the situation. Got rid of my Canon FF and other Pentax (K-5 & K-3), and haven’t been more satisfied - for now!! Also most of my friends use at least two systems. Most have added a Fuji or another mirrorless system to their Canon or Nikon. So your thinking is sound and not unusual, but the specifics of the multiple systems are up to you and your type of photography

I was in Seville just a few days ago. I had the Pentax KP and the Sigma 17-70mm lens. However, the ideal lens for my trip would have been the Pentax 16-85mm lens. I found that a slightly wider and longer focal length would be perfect. The KP was great especially inside the world largest Cathedral where you will need a quite camera with great low light performance.

I have switched systems a few times and still use multiple systems now. I used Canon 5D FF system until 2011, but the weight was killing me when travelling, so I switched to mirrorless Panasonic GH2. Then I was not satisfied with its dynamic range and low light performance, so started looking for something better. In 2012 I switched to the Pentax K-5 with a few primes and zooms, and fell in love with the system. The size and performance was perfect for me. Updated to K-3 then K-P, which I think is the best camera I ever used so far. I still keep the Panasonic system (now have the GX80/85) for video and some street photography. I also added the GRII a couple of years ago and it is great camera to have all the time in the Jacket pocket. There is really no one perfect system for all situations and every body, so until that perfect system exists (small, high quality, perfect lens selection, great video, ...) I have to use multi-system approach.

My travel backpack is the "Manfrotto Street Camera and Laptop Backpack for DSLR/CSC (Green and Gray)". It is perfect size for any airline as a carry on. It fits any of the Pentax APSC cameras and few lenses. Laptop and other accessories can surprisingly fit in it, considering how compact it is. The build quality is also great. I have tried many others in the past, but I am finally happy with this one.

I have this lens and the K-70. I also have the older screw drive version and the K-3. The image quality is excellent and at least as good as the older combo. However, the AF is faster and there is much less hunting compared to the older model. It is also quite. In general, my impression is very much the same as the first impression published on this site (see Adam's reply).

I make photo books. One after each trip and one for best photos of the year. Sometimes I make theme books. It is a good way to preserve memories and show it family and friends. It is also artistically challenging and fun to do.

This picture was taken about a minute after sunrise from a beach in Amalfi, Italy in October 2012. I took many pictures that morning and it was very hard to select only one for this contest. It was taken handheld at ISO 400, f/9, at 1/100s. The lens used was the newer Sigma 18-200mm II DC HSM which was very useful on this trip. Although I had 4 other prime lenses with me, this lens was used in over 60% of the 5000 pictures I took.
