Just dropping in, didn't read all the comments just a few, but honestly, Pentax is more silent than any cemetery I have been to. No wonder people get an impression that Pentax is nearly being gone. Even Nikon is trying to show they are okay by making some teasers, Fuji also, they do some rumors etc. I no longer am tracking other brands, as I am a happy Sony shooter, but I still hear about other brands, Pentax on the other hand... If I ever see it mentioned every two or so years, I fear to hear Pentax is out of business. And usually am relieved to hear some hints on possible new lens or something. It would help if Pentax Ricoh would be less secretive and do some more marketing things to give some excitement, it seems like even spy agencies are less secretive than Pentax is lol.

Hopefully Pentax is doing ok, miss being a Pentaxian.

[New video Oct 27] New information about upcoming APS-C flagship model

Well, at least Pentax has 645 line of medium format cameras. In time this might be their power horse to survive in the market. The way things are going, Pentax cameras are not exciting in the eyes of new potential users, which should be Ricoh Pentax focus, the current loyal fan base consist of solid age users which is not getting younger, due to Covid-19 it may (hopefully not) be reduced. Pentax as a name isn't Leica. So either they attempt something exciting or find really good niche. Pentax is really good at building solid rugged and ergonomic cameras, maybe they could find inspiration in extreme environmental conditions photography or something.

Just some thoughts.

[New video Oct 27] New information about upcoming APS-C flagship model

For those excited about 4k video addition, well it's nice but questionable. I suspect it will be just a basic implementation that comes with the new chip. Spec sheet writes that live view focusing is contrast detect only, probably means no on sensor phase detect technology present. So no advanced stuff for live view shooting. That also could be a reason why they didn't bother to put any kind swivel or vary angle screen. Although I still think that phase detect auto focus during live view would be great for those odd angle shots. No log options could also indicate that devs didn't look much into it, no HLG also indicate that 4k video is only to match spec sheet with last years commons.

Anyway, exciting to see news from Pentax, should be great camera for photography, I miss the ergonomics of Pentax quite a lot. Pentax is slow to introduce things nowadays, but it puts smile and joy on me when I see news from Pentax.

The most advanced APS-C camera on the market? Then they should surpass the likes of Samsung NX1 and Fuji XT4, which I doubt they will do due to some simple ignorance of some aspects, that redefined what an average camera is today.

Regardless, the design of this new Pentax camera is lovely. Looks serious. Wish they designed bodies for Sony. Pentax really knows how to design ergonomic cameras.

hello!

I guess many Pentax users should be excited somewhat. Pity it's not Ricoh Pentax who came up with it, but I remember heated discussions about Pentax and Video features, and there were many vocal Pentaxians who were so against accepting that photography and videography nowadays come together that they expressed desire for a camera, that came with no video features and/or screen etc. And that wish just came true!
Pixii cameras are for your service.
I am curious what you think about that?

I honestly wish Ricoh Pentax will push it and release not an outdated product, but something, that would put Pentax cameras on the map again. Ricoh Pentax must look into the future, not old farts. Keeping my fingers crossed for something exciting this time.

Lol, to say my i-phone does the job is a slap to the face to any camera manufacturer and doesn't make any good to brands like Pentax who really needs to step up in this department. Anyway, Pentax still can be used as a B cam, it should be fine. I used to be Pentax advocate but my phone does the better job than my Pentax cam so I went with Sony A7iii to have both decent video and stills.

That's how it goes when the company tries to be super secretive, if they released controlled rumors, most eyes would be on those rumors, but now curiosity leads to all available information sources everywhere. Meaning every fart is being counted and examined :)

Photokina 2018 Q&A - What would you ask Ricoh?

Is Ricoh Pentax marketing team happy with their selling of Sony A7III? I am quite satisfied with my new camera! only thing... it's not a Pentax...
putting sarcasm away...

Are there any hopes to see something that could go head to head with the likes of Fujifilm X-T3 and Sony A7III?

Could Ricoh Pentax consider adapting Samsung NX1 technologies and continue on where Samsung left just in K mount? Too much of a fantasy?

My best wishes to Ricoh Pentax. Even though I moved on to Sony, Pentax will always have special place in my heart cause Pentax made me love photography and all kinds of imaging.

If someone can tell Ricoh Pentax this: less secrets and more excitement would make things better ;)

Let's hope it's something exciting. Pity a bit too late, already moved on. But one of many things Pentax is good at is to make people feel sentimental about the brand, you just keep on checking with hopes to see something wonderful from Pentax. (Marketing team should really consider some controlled leaks to keep people eyes on Pentax)

It must be either very up to competition new line of cameras or something very unique and different announced at Photokina. Keeping my fingers crossed for something exciting.

Pentax K-1 Mark II DSLR camera detailed specifications leaked

I sincerely hope that these rumored specs are a joke, a prank to make competing brands laugh before they get crushed by something huge and unexpected. If not, then Ricoh just have beaten Canon with the most unexciting and boring "new" camera release ever.
I kind of hoped Ricoh to be innovative company and bring out Pentax technologies from being old fart. Keeping my fingers crossed for these leaked specs to be all wrong except for the ISO part.

K-1 and its filming future?

And people are worried about the not so exciting latest financial report results from Ricoh. Pentax users and Ricoh Pentax them selves instead of welcoming the market of today suggest to go with another brand. Shooting own legs and cutting off own hands.

Just make video on par with what is a standard today... But no... instead allow budget cellphones produce better video footage than a flagship Dslr. As much as some people insist on not accepting, video is now a mandatory function of any camera. Great cameras need all their functions to be great. 21st century and generations where every second person is somesort of photog and v-blogger. If Pentax is still so persistant to ignore importance of multimedia and focus on stills only, they have to make it in exceptional manner so that stills only would be really that awesome for the imaging people of today to take it masively.

For guys who tell to get a dedicated video cam. I shoot with Canon C100 mk2 and Sony Fs5 from time to time. While they are really great video cams and provides amazing experience for video making, Dslr and mirrorless cameras actually have many advantages over video cams. While on a budget, Dslrs and mirrorless cameras make great balance of compromises to be great tools for both stills and movie making. From what I see so many photographers keeps hitting the unexpected needs of video shooting and experience that moment "if only my Pentax cam did a little bit better video, I wouldn't need to get that other camera..."

The 4k video challenge

in the years when everything is turning to 4K and 8k technologies already are introduced, it would be a shame for a camera manufacturer to not offer a decent 4K video when a mid level cellphone can offer decent 4K video. Industry changed and it keeps advancing, so either the one offers something incredible and exceptional for the price or go with the industry and offer what now is considered a standard, meaning a DSLR is expected to be able to shoot video and the more time goes, the more 4k will be standard, we already are seeing hints of 6k and 8k coming to video oriented cameras. it won;t be that long for 4K to be considered a standard resolution while 8k will be high definition and what today we call high definition will be low definition. Canon tried to slow down the expectations of 4k videography in DSLRs, but Sony and Panasonic pushed the train so well it is hardly to be stopped. DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras found quite a huge market in video department. New generation expects a DSLR or Mirrorless camera to shoot good quality video. It is a natural evolution. Yes there are cinema cameras and they will be, but DSLRs are already used even for filming featured high end movies, their form factor found its uses and advantages. But there are more uses than that, video blogs, independent film making, you name it. which ever company was first to introduce video in a DSLR changed the whole industry in an unstoppable way. Today a camera that doesn;t shoot video is considered for a niche market. Expectations are getting higher and higher every day. Want it or not Ricoh Pentax is also getting these expectations.

Why I won't buy a KP.

Because Pentax wants me to go with another brand.
No decent updates in video department since Pentax K-01 times. This ruins the excitement. And as much as I love Pentax and qualities Pentax cameras have, this one tiny segment pushes me away from getting a new Pentax camera.
That is why I am not investing in Pentax KP or Pentax k1. What is more, probably my investment will go to another brand.
I am facing the need to upgrade my pc so who knows, maybe Pentax will release a camera I would have interest in by the time I will collect funds for a new camera. However, judging last 5 years, my hopes are no longer... still nice to see new developments from Pentax and I am happy to see KP getting so much attention all over the internet. Hopefully this cam will be a success and will bring in foundation for even more exciting innovations to Pentax brand.

interesting to see this Pentax KP to get so much attention all over the internet. Something worked out pretty well, is it Pentax K1 being FF made people be interested in anything new coming from Pentax or all that is needed to get attention is high iso number?

Looks interesting, but if no updates to video features to match at least Fuji X-T2, then unfortunately no deal. But the camera looks really interesting, many deals like on K1, hopefully it will be a speedy cam.

Linux OS For Photgraphic Editing And Printing

Can't comment on photo printers but I used to work in a print house and we were seriuously considering Linux. Our printers were working out of the box with Linux showing estimates in how much toners we have left for printing. But the wall we couldn't break was the lack of software that could replace the likes of corel draw etc.

Currently I am full time Linux user and have no trouble at all. But I print pictures at photo print houses. GIMP is a very fine image editor while Darktable is perfect alternative for Lightroom in my eyes.

What do you guys do for video?

I cannot argue the Pentax K1 being absolutely stunning for stills and when invested in Pentax K1 and also having many K mount lenses it is not easy to let it go. And that is normal. But for those who didn;t invest as much, switch is easier. For example I have Pentax k30 and a couple of Pentax autofocus lenses, the rest are legacy lenses. If I need higher end Pentax glass I have a couple of sources to rent them from. I now am looking to do upgrade, cause I now am facing the need for a FF sensor and also I need decent video recording. So it's a headache, if Pentax K1 had decent enough video capabilities, there would be no thinking, I would go with it and that is it. But unfortunately for my needs even Nikon D750 makes a better choice than Pentax K1. I mean speed for documentary style shooting and decent enough video features. That is when accepting a lot of compromises. Now if Sony A7 mk3 would come in similar speed as A99mk2 and video features similar or tiny bit better than a6500, then it is the one tool to strive for. On the other hand, if Pentax K1 had what Fuji XT-2 has for video( and there are lots of compromises, but it is good enough for many projects),then I would go with Pentax K1 any time. I love Pentax.

Of course to have an opportunity to go with RED or Panasonic Varicam or BlackmagicDesign Cinema cameras or Sony F5 would be great, but those are another league and designed for serious productions, while DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras proved to be very usable and good solutions for many video projects that photogs are mostly asked for. Even for independent film making DSLRs proved to be this pretty much perfect tool to go with when on low budget. Not to mention that DSLR form factor proved to have some advantages over dedicated cameras. And I am saying this from personal practical experience.

Anyway, hopefully Pentax will do something about video soon, legacy photographers might not need video at all, but new generations need it.

The problem is that they are taking too much time, by the time they will make decent 1080p industry might be already 8k. I love Pentax DSLRs and the quality they bring, I so wished Pentax K1 to be my FF DSLR of choice, but their ignorance of video features pushes me to go with another brand. But if I do so, will I look back? I doubt it, because when the one invest into system, lenses and accessories, the one no longer bounces. I mean currently I am not a person who can jump ship as if changing socks. I just hope that Pentax will manage to offer stills cameras future proof. It doesn;t look like they will do anything video semi-serious any time soon (praying to be wrong), not much is asked in terms of video features, something similar to Samsung NX1, Fuji XT-2 or Sony a7R2, these cameras give this good enough for majority who are to do both stills and video. Lumix GH5 is a whole new landmark, but it is also aimed for very serious use. I guess Pentax won;t bother to go this advanced, but more love for video would be very welcome.

I always used to consider Japan and China to be those countries that are pretty much tomorrow today. but Pentax point of view sometimes doesn;t seem to fit that entirely.
Well anyway, for now the most common practice is to go with Lumix GH4 or Sony a7s for video shooting and loyal Pentaxians use Pentax for photography tasks, that is until they just migrate to one system that gives both worlds for those who often have to deal with stills and video services and projects.
