... sorry to contradict some other members, but for me, it is a toss. The Tamron is slightly better at full aperture. they are equivalent at f/4.0 and above.

I have problems to upload the photos, not enough space.....
I took a brick wall with the extender 1.4x +
1. Pentax DA 50/1.8 at 1.8
2. Pentax DA 50/1.8 at 2.8
3. Pentax D-FA 100/2.8M at 2.8
4. Pentax D-FA 100/2.8M at 4.0
5. Pentax FA* 200/2.8 at 2.8
The results are:
1. Everything is blurry, especially the edges
2. The center area is sharp, the edges blurry. Huge improvement.
3. Except for the corners, everything is sharp
4. Like 3, very slightly better (the corners are still not perfect)
5. Like 3, center very slightly less good, corners very slightly better
In a nutshell, not usable with the 50/1.8 (except maybe at 4.0 or more?), good but not great with the 100/2.8M and the 200/2.8.

I bought one 'New' from Japan through Ebay. It looks new. Mechanically and electronically, it works perfectly.
But the image quality is terrible, especially near the edges. Atrocious with the 50/1.8DA. Really bad with the 70/2.4 DA. Ok but not great with the 100/2.8M D-FA. Good with the 200/2.8 FA*.
Is it 'normal' or do I have a 'lemon' ?

* The focal is very different; ypu are the only one that can decide what you need;
* Even if the 35/2.4 is very good, the 50/1.8 is the better lens (it is absolutely exceptional). Less flare, sharper at full aperture despite being one aperture larger. A lot better than the 50mm f/2.0 made by Pentax in the past.

Steve, thanks for the suggestion, you were right... My beloved lens is foggy inside (as well as my 20/2.8 FA ; and of course all my cheaper lenses are fine)
I hope it is not fungus, no 'linear' features, it looks like vapor... any suggestions before I go to the repair shop? Haidryer? Dehumidifier? Sun bath?
I am not able to open the lens, I am affraid I will not be able to assemble it perfectly after cleaning. ---------- Post added 08-26-16 at 12:19 PM ---------- I wondered why it is ok at f/5.6? Well, the 'fog' is on the periphery, the central area is clean.

No need of a tripod at 1/3000th sec... and the image at f/5.6 and 1/250th sec is a lot sharper...

What I did was pretty solid - Brick wall at 60 ft, manual focus with loupe, two series of photos at 1.8-2.8-4.0-5.6, 200 ISO, no anti-aliasing filter, anti-shake on, high shutter speed...
But the lack of contrast is incredible, it doesn't fit with what I read here, nor my past experience...
I wonder if it could be..... condensation inside the lens, it is very hot and humid here in Houston.
Will test again and let you know.

'Less than perfect sharpness is a good thing'
You are joking? She is so beautiful that sharper is better...
(Joking..... I apologize if I offended someone, but I couldn't resist)
Also, I tested the 70/2.4... puzzling. It is as good (at same aperture) as the 77/1.8 (and I thought it was markedly inferior).
My testing and camera are fine, I checked and re-checked the parameters, and got outstanding results with the 50/1.8 DA and the 100/2.8M D-FA.
I wonder... there is one thing I didn't check... maybe the in-camera lens correction (I was in jpeg mode) is wrong for the 77/1.8?
Beautiful photos by the way, congratulations.

I own the Pentax 77/1.8 FA-L for a long time.....
With my Pentax K10D (10 MP), and later my K30 (16 MP), I thought that it was an outstanding lens...
A few weeks ago I received the K70 (24 MP) and tested many lenses on a brick wall 60' away... very careful manual focus... and surprise, the 77/1.8 came off pretty bad.
It begins to be good at f/4.0, and is really good at f/5.6.
I think that it reached its limits with the 24 MP sensor even if it looks more like a contrast problem than a resolution problem.
Also, I wonder if there would be some sort of bad synergy between the 77/1.8 and the 24 MP sensor?

Its sensor is actually more similar to the K3-II, not the K-S2.
I bought a K70 a few weeks ago. I had a K30 before.
I have mix feelings:
- It is certainly a very good camera at this price point
- The difference of Image Quality with the K30 is smaller than expected.
- The look is way inferior to the K30, which was a superb piece of industrial design.
- It is slightly heavier, when I hoped for a lighter camera
- The viewfinder is very good with AF lenses, but still inadequate for manual focusing
- I like the movable LCD, very convenient
- Handling is superb, as often with Pentax
- The autofocus seems to be slightly improved

You need wide angles. Don't even bother to take your tele zoom. One light 135/2.8 or 200/4 is enough.
But you need at a minimum a 28mm, a 24mm + 35mm is better, a 20mm + 28 or 35 would be perfect but there is a risk you will not be able to use the 20mm properly, it requires experience.
Also, a wide aperture lens for museum and churches / cathedrals / exhibitions / performances could be useful, take a 50/1.4 or similar.
I am speaking in terms of Full Frame focals.

I owned the M35/2.0 and owns now the A28/2.0. I think that the A35/2.0 is optically identical to the M35/2.0.
At f/2.0, the 28 mm is slightly better in terms of sharpness and vignetting.
At f/2.8, the 28mm is a lot better, especially on the edges.
The 35mm catches up at f/5.6-f/8.0.
I love the A28mm/2.0 (above average I.Q., very light for its focal and aperture, still convenient on digital cameras); I never liked the 35mm.
I do have the FA35/2.0, it is a lot better than the previous 35mm. I.Q. slightly better than the A28/2.0!
As for the M 35mm f/2.8, it is poor at f/2.8, but really good at f/4.0 and above.

I didn't have all at the same time, but here is what I observed along the years, at full aperture and at F5.6:
M or A 28/2.8: Good ; Very Good
A 28/2.0: Good ; Excellent
FA 28/2.8: Very Good ; Very Good
M 35/2.0: Bad, Excellent
M 35/2.8: Good, Excellent
FA 35/2: Good, Excellent
I must add that I dislike the FA focus ring. In front of the lens, too narrow.
And as you know, the A28/2.0 is incredibly light for its focal and aperture.

What I miss are my favorite modes with film cameras:
- Set the aperture on the lense, let the camera select the adequate speed (Av)
- Set the aperture on the lense and the shutter speed on the body, and tune the exposure (from -2 to 0 to +2 IL) using a graph in the viewfinder.
These procedures were simple, fast, and allowed full control of depth of field. Even 'K' and 'M' lenses could be used like this. But no 'modern' digital Pentax camera seems to match these procedures. And I suspect that exposure errors I noticed with the Kx would be less probable, electric connections being not used.

Hi all,
I have a lot of Pentax lenses, and worry about the futur of the company. Also, I am against weight - neck problems. I wonder how it is, practically, to use light mirrorless cameras like Sony NEX, Fuji X, Samsung, Canon EOS-M, Micro Four-Third..... with an adapter and Pentax lenses? Any input highly appreciated.

Sounds very similar to my problem. I wish so much that the aperture ring could be used on Pentax DSLRs, instead of being limited to the 'A' position.....
I suppose I will have to use bracketing or my brain (but I would prefer to 'focus' on geometry, composition and light), when time allows, to make well-exposed photos

I used a Tamron SP 17/3.5, a Pentax A135/2.8 and a Pentax A24/2.8.
Always at ISO 200, in 'A' - 'Center-weighted' exposure mode.
When going from 2.8 to 5.6, or from 5.6 to 11, the indicated shutter speed in the viewfinder was divided by 4 as it should be.
But my photos at 2.8 (or 3.5 with the Tamron) and at 11 are slightly underexposed (-1 IL?), and my photos at 5.6 slightly overexposed (+0.5 IL?)

It is not a user problem, it is a technical problem.
I used the 'full frame, center-weighted' exposure type, and took photos of exactly the same subject.
