Now we're talking Paul! It sounds like I can "un install" Lightroom from my external hard drive then.... figure out how to separate out the Lightroom catalog from Lightroom on the computer hard drive and instal it on the external hard drive...... hummm ;-) (pretty early in Melbourne)

Thank you Eric.... I agree, I need some in person help! In the back of my mind I thought that "maybe" all my work is still there but just in the wrong place but I can't know for sure. What I suspect is that a Lightroom wiz will look at my computer for three or four minutes and say something like "easy, no problem, you just did this instead of doing that", But then I have a lot of learning to do after that ;-)

Steve, Paul, Mark!

I really appreciated your instant feedback last week even though I didn't resolve my issue. However, I realize that whatever the PEF/DNG problem is, its because of "something" I have done or not done... That will get resolved in time and it appears that it doesn't matter which RAW format its in on Lightroom though I for some reason thought that Lightroom could not process PEF. Apparently I was wrong yet again ;-) My REAL problem is that my download of pics onto my Mac hard drive stopped because the computers hard drive was full... I "thought" I had taken measures a month ago by adding a large external hard drive which I also installed Lightroom 6 on. My thinking was that every time I wanted to download pics I would turn on the computer, open Lightroom 6 on the external hard drive and then download new files to the external hard drive. I was wrong...... New files continued to load on the Mac hard drive till it was full. So.... I drove to a city near by to a Mac kind of store and the tech partitioned my external hard drive and showed me how to drag all of my lightroom pic files onto the external hard drive and once done drag all my pic files from lightroom on the Mac hard drive to the trash and delete them..................... I did this at home which opened up space on the Mac hard drive so that the computer could function again but when I opened Lightroom to process pics from the external hard drive they are locked. I can open them but can't do anything with them. Also, the 3000 pics are not listed in the Lightroom library. Each of the 3000 pics have their image number which looks something like this, IMGP 0003.dng-Locked 28.5MB, and... "This document does not support editing" and "This document can be duplicated to a format that supports editing" and then give the option of "undo change" or "duplicate as TIFF". So... I am at a total loss as to what to do. I have hundreds of hours of work in Lightroom in these files and I'd hate to lose them and am worried that I have already lost all that when I dragged them from the computer hard drive to the trash. I would be positively homicidal if they were gone except that I have saved all of my memory cards as they were so i at least have all of the original images.

I have tried to find someone in my area who knows Lightroom well and possibly even Mac but have found nobody and nobody at the computer store knows anything about Lightroom either. So my immediate problem is to find out if I've lost all of my work, then learn more about lightroom, then download a few hundred new pics and figure out what they all look flat and muted color in lightroom when in the camera they are full of color... The DNG/PEF issue is a mistake i made someplace that will shake out when the above mess is unraveled. So.... does anyone have any ideas for me to figure out if my files are damaged, lost or OK and how to do all this file transfer with a backup on the external drive? Or give it all up and get my Kodak Instamatic out and leave well enough alone...

Paul, your post reassures me that somehow I may be able to salvage this mess! However.... while I've been using lightroom for a couple years now I've really not learned anything about it other than pushing some obvious buttons to download etc. I'm simply going to have to find a classroom experience with learning to use Lightroom in order to understand enough to follow the wonderful advice of yours and others on the forum. I've simply gotten in too deep to fast, made a big mess and need to back out and start from the beginning. It may take awhile but based on what you're saying and others I suspect that I can eventually get on track.

Thanks so much, Bob

Paul,

On the screen on the K3 for image capture settings it is set at Raw DNG..... When I transfer the files into Lightroom they end up PEF. However..... you did point out something i never thought of....I checker the 4-way controller and it was set at "Radiant" which I must have done accidentally during one of my pre dawn shoots this last week... :-( I suppose this screws up several hundred pics :-( And.... they are all in PEF on the computer. Maybe I need to dump everything off my computer and start over....

---------- Post added 06-12-18 at 09:54 PM ----------

Hi Mark,

I've been getting DNG's from the camera for the last three years but.... another parameter to this problem is that I have added a 4 terabyte external drive for all my pics as backup and today I transferred a bunch of DNG files onto the new hard drive and they ended up PEF files and when I open them in lightroom they look like crap. So, I think my best bet is to erase everything and reload my 32GB cards.. What I'd really like is to meet in the flesh other Pentax owners. On all the shoots I go on all the Nikon and Cannon and Sony owners swap info and tips. I could use some of that hands on stuff! ;-)

I'm desperate... My K3 DNG files are changed to PEF files when I dump them into Lightroom 6 on my Mac. Been dong this for a couple years but now, all of a sudden my DNG files are converted to PEF files. It is VERY apparent as the color nearly washes out and they look flat. I have no idea what to do. What I want is to PAY real money to someone to sit down with me, my computer, lightroom and my pictures and take me through using all this technology the correct way. I live near Minneapolis St. Paul Minnesota and would gladly drive a couple hundred miles and pay for hands on training. I've been signing up for photo shoots in three states for four years and have never met another Pentax shooter so learning from another Mac Pentax photographer hasn't been possible.

Thanks, Bob

SDM on new lenses

I checked the new D FA 15-30 on B&H and checked the reviews. Some good, some so, so and one in depth negative assessment about getting four lenses in a row and all were out of wack. Sounded just like the issues with the DA* 16-50 which immediately put me off. I realize this is one really bad review but it sounds too much like what I've seen before. In any case, the 15-30's front element project far out in front and will not allow the mounting and use of rectangular filters which simply eliminates it from consideration. The only reason I would get the K1 is for greater width of view that you can't get with the crop sensor. I already have the 31mm, 43mm 77mm and 100 micro along with full frame 300 and 500 Sigmas but they all work just fine on the K3 so I only need the K1 for scenery. If I can find eventually a good quality wide zoom for the K1 then I'll get it. ;-)

I know Norm.... and I appreciate it but I just have to take a little time to sort my mess out. I love my K3's and have been "satisfied" with my DA* 16-50 till it failed recently. If I don't get it back soon from repairs I may just buy the Sigma 17-50 which actually got better reviews than the DA* 16-50 and its on sale for something like $376 at B&H... For the time being I'll hold off on purchasing a K1 mark ll till I find the right wide angle zoom that supports my Singh-Ray filter system. It'll work out in the end... ;-)

SDM on new lenses

I bought my DA* lenses in 2014 and 2015 from B&H.

The 50-135 failed after 5 days and was replaced by B&H and the replacement failed two weeks later. I bought the DA* 300 in 2014 and it had started failing within six months. Also bought the DA* 16-50 in 2014 and it failed early this year. And I shouldn't have to pay to have them converted to 30 year old focusing technology. Ricoh should give me and others our money back or make good on their product! Ricoh should have Uncle Vanya as paid staff as he's saving their asses.

Ricoh did indeed sell defective lenses... the motor IS part of the lens and its crap engineering or crap production!

There was NO two year warranty period. I did send in the 50-135 after the second lens failed in two weeks. Got the lens back and it failed soon after. After that I threw it in the closet and after awhile had Uncle Vanya convert it. We shouldn't have to put up with this crap from the manufacturer as they are very expensive lenses.

I looked at the new DA lens made by Tamron and it has received some scathing reviews for QC issues.(B&H reviews) Also, if I wanted a Tamron lens I'd buy one. I want the quality that I have in my 15, 31 and 77mm lenses or the better Sigma lenses. I want the optical quality that is in the DA* lenses and I want them to actually focus. Basically Ricoh isn't offering anything on the long end except a telescope and on the wide end their 2.8 zoom lenses have issues and there is no 2.8 15mm. Thanks for your time and feedback but I'm very frustrated, a bit pissed and stuck with a system that I've invested heavily in and can't afford to jump ship.

SDM on new lenses

Reading about SDM issues makes me want to vomit... I bought three brand new DA* lenses, the 16-50, the 50-135 and the 300 and they all failed. The 50-135 failed within two weeks of delivery. Sent it back to B&H and they replaced it with a new one which failed in one week. While I love my K-3 and K-3ll cameras and my 15, 31, 77 and 100 Pentax lenses I will never buy another Ricoh/Pentax lens, EVER! The bottom line is that Ricoh knowingly sold defective lenses to thousands of people around the world and in my mind they stole $3,000 from me. I have very much wanted to buy the new K1 mark 2 full frame to do scenery and night sky photography but I need a fast 15-30 lens that accepts various front filters and the Tamron lens doesn't allow for this because of the front element. Sadly, I'll be buying a Nikon full frame and wide angle zoom for my needs. Ricoh is not delivering on the wide angle zoom end or the long end nor are they accepting responsibility for screwing thousands of customers.

Sorry to hear about your focus issues... been there too often myself. "Likely", your issues are based on the DA* lenses junk autofocusing mechanisim. All three of my lenses (16-50, 50-135 and 300mm) have failed, which is criminal on Ricoh's part in my opinion. Your only option is to have the lens's converted to screw drive which is just is a simple reprograming of the lens. Here in the states forum member Uncle Vanya, does this conversion for a very reasonable fee. After the conversion the lens will focus quite quickly, in my experience even faster than the SDM mechanism. The noise is negligible and probably of no importance unless you're doing wedding pics or if you're a "spy".... ;-). I love my DA* lenses becuase they are so sharp but hate them because I had tp pay premium prices for 1990 focus technology... Contact Uncle Vanya and see what shipping costs might be. He is fast!

Not much to see here it seems. Nice adjustments to a nice camera but until Ricoh gets auto focus that competes with Nikon/Canon I'll stick with my K3ll. Would love a Pentax full frame but it has to do a lot better with autofocus.....
