The closest thing to your 50mm on the K1000 would be the 'plastic fantastic' 35mm f2.4. I'm very pleased with my copy.

I totally agree with the idea of an 'experienced' camera for hiking or other adventures. My camera for road trips around Europe is the K5iis with a used 18-135mm, because if it gets damaged or stolen, it's not that much of a loss. My primary, and much more expensive, camera, the K3iii, stays closer to home.
Best of luck with your choice!

@allenmh: the sigma 70 macro is screwdrive, and I am not aware of a 10-20 4-5,6 HSM in Pentax mount?
In Imaging Resource's catalogue of Sigma lenses, the 10-20mm f/4-5.6 is designated as an HSM lens. Maybe they made a mistake; I don't know. I know the 70mm Macro is screw-drive.

I have just tested my 2 Sigma lenses (10-20 f/4-5.6 HSM and my 70 Macro) on both my KP and my K3iii, and they both work fine.

My choice for this use case is the Panasonic TZ/ZS 100, which has a 1" sensor, 25-250mm zoom range, has a small but useful evf, and charges the battery in-camera.
Its IQ is almost on a par with my apsc-kameraer.
I have the Nikon P7100, and is very satisfied with its ccd-sensor and its ovf.
Whatever you choose, have a nice trip.

I believe that the new 16-50mm f/2.8 lens is also equipped with a PLM motor, and that many here are praying that the 50-135 f/2.8 will get a similar upgrade.

Minimising your gear and maximising your IQ is the eternal struggle when traveling. My solution to this dilemma is twofold: For once-in-a-lifetime trips that involve flying, I take one one body and one or two lenses. Post-pandemic that has been the K5IIs and the 18-135mm + the 15mm Ltd. For roadtrips I would add the old screw-drive 18-250mm.
For visits to big cities like Paris, Berlin, Rome or Vienna, I take my Panasonic Lumix TZ/ZS 100, which has almost the IQ of my APSC Pentax gear, and charges the battery in the camera. With a universal adapter with two USB-ports, I can charge my phone and my camera at the same time.
For your group trip to Italy that would be my preferred solution.
Good luck with your choices and have a great trip!

With your camera, and with a prime lens attached, there are basically two 'zoom' modes:
1. You 'zoom with your feet' before taking the picture.
2. You 'zoom' digitally by cropping the image after taking it.
Good luck exploring your new camera and lens. I've heard good things about the 14mm.

As the 18-135mm is a native Pentax lens, any aberration, distortion or fringing can be corrected in-camera at the time of capture.
It shows down the processing, of course, but it might be worth it in a travel lens.
I took the 18-135mm as my only lens on my visit to New Zealand in 2019, knowing I was going to visit the Franz Josef glacier. The WR feature was a must for me.

I have considered the Sigma myself, but for in-door event use.
For a travel lens, I would look for a WR lens, like the 18-135mm, or the 16-85mm. I believe the 18-135mm can be had used for less than $300.
Good luck with your hunt, and the trip.

I have the Canon EF-S 15-85mm for my Canon 60D. It is a lovely lens, and one of the few Canon non-L lenses with what Pentax calls quickshift, manual override of the autofocus. It is also an example of Canon's pettiness, as it comes without a lenshood. When I bought mine, I was very careful to buy a third-party hood; I saw no reason to enrich Canon's coffers any further, as it was at the time I bought it the most expensive lens I'd ever had.
I agree that an 18-135mm would be a cheaper and more versatile choice, and in your place I would go for the STM version, Canon's version of Pentax's PLM.
Of course, no Canon non-L lens will be WR, that is a Pentax exclusive.
Good luck with your choice.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no adapter that allows you to use auto-focus lenses from Pentax on a Canon camera. The reason you can use your M 50mm/1.7 lens on a Canon, is because it is manual focus.
If you want to use your auto-focus lens, you need a Pentax camera body. Sorry!

You are quite right, sorry. My version is the 18-55mm II with the metal mount and quickshift. At least you get a hood and a door for handling a CPL or ND filter. I still find it Ok for shooting at f8.

I have both the 18-55m (the improved DAL II version) and the 55-300mm lenses, and find them perfectly adequate, as long as you stop them down to f8, where most zooms tend to be at their best.
I agree that a K5II or K5IIs would be a good upgrade (the K5IIs is my travel body, usually combined with either the 18-250mm or the 18-135mm for rainy days) for a reasonable amount of money.
Good luck with your choices.

I'm basing my opinion on my personal experience. Back in the early '90s I bought a Nikon p&s for about 500,- DKr. At that time a roll of film with 36 exposures cost about 75,- DKr. for the roll itself, processing and printing of the images; shoot 7 rolls of film, and you had spent the cost of the camera.

Film photography follows the dictum of 'cheap to aquire, expensive to use'. Digital is the other way around. I'd rather buy a used digital camera than a film camera any day. I'm never going back!

Welcome to the Forum from København, Danmark. I am fond of spending a week in Nice every year in the early spring, to get a taste of spring to come at my latitude.

My experience, and I think also that of others on the forum, is that the 55-300mm PLM is at its sharpest a tad short of 300mm, maybe 260 - 270mm. Not that it is at all bad at 300mm, just not at its sharpest.
It is basically welded to my K3iii.
So, about your photo, as others have mentioned, you need to get a fair bit closer to your subject, and maybe not use the full 300mm, in order to get the sharpest shot.

Just a shout out to MPB Europe.
Shortly before Christmas I ordered a Pentax K10D from MPB Europe, but because I made a typo in my email address I never received an email confirmation of my order.
When I contacted them today to find out what had gone wrong, they sorted it out in less than a minute, and informed me that my camera was ready for pick-up.
I just got it and look forward to exploring the camera, which seems to be a much more advanced version of my very first Pentax, the K200D.
Happy Christmas to me!!! :):):)

Are you by any chance referring to digiscoping? I've seen some YouTube clips where you can attach your camera or your phone to a scope, to use its magnification to get shots of wildlife.

Tv mode on the Pentax is the same as Tv mode on your Canon camera. Unique to Pentax is the TAv mode that allows you to set the shutter speed and aperture of your choosing, and then allows the ISO value to vary in order to get a correct exposure. Another unique exposure mode on Pentax is Sv, which lets you set an ISO value, and then the camera picks the shutter speed and aperture.
Another feature exclusive to Pentax is the Hyper Program Mode, where you put the camera in P mode and then turn either the front or rear wheel to temporarily change into Tv or Av mode. Pressing the green button wil return you to P mode.
Your Pentax is a very sophisticated device. I hope you'll get a lot of satisfaction from using it.
