Pentax Television Ads?

I've been seeing the Canon SL1 commercial running pretty heavily on TV lately, it's the one with the amazing soccer kids and the soccer mom

You Tube

And the Nikon commercials with Aston Kutcher ran a lot a couple years ago, can't remember a recent one.

That is really unfortunate. I think many basic consumers buy Nikon / Canon simply because it is in their face. The pro-sumer gearheads may go out and do some research, read some reviews etc, but I think a lot of first time SLR owners just buy what they see advertised, especially if it makes the product look cool.

So I was just watching a really old vlog by Ed ( photouniverse ) on why Pentax marketing sucks

You Tube

I then had to scratch my head and try to remember a Pentax TV ad, but honestly I don't remember ever seeing a Pentax commercial in my part of the country. I have seen Nikon and Canon commercials a-plenty, but none from Pentax.

Do they run TV ads in the USA? Anywhere in world?

Here in the south, 50m pools are for Long Course ( summer ), Short course is the rest of the year, and is normally a 25 YARD pool. My girls swim year round, so they do both. Many of the long course venues here are outdoors so deck access is not an issue and 70-200mm works fine, you don't even need an expensive f/2.8 lens.

For indoors, often the deck is closed to all but swimmers and coaches, so unless we are lucky enough to get deck access, we generally don't bother to shoot the action, Many of these indoor venues seem to have lighting comparable to caves and you really need f/2.8, and longer lenses at 2.8 are cost prohibitive when you are shooting just for fun.

My Point is the T5i has the same sensor as the T2i from 2010, the same sensor as the 60D and 7D. Sure, the T5i has a flip out screen and others goodies for video shooters, but the same sensor so essentially the same camera as the T2i. Image quality will be exactly the same. So the 70D finally ships a new sensor with only slightly better lowlight performance, and 'Dual Pixel CMOS AF' geared toward better LIVE view focusing...again it's more about the videographer than the still shooter. Maybe the 7DmrkII will trump that, but I suspect it will get the 70d sensor, who knows.

LOL, I wouldn't get away with buying her a K50. She has shot over 65,000 frames on her t2i since Dec 2010, so I don't want to cheap out on her.

I have no doubt that she would be happy with the 70D. She does not have a gear fetish like I do. The problem is that "I" can't get excited about the 70d, and I do all of the camera/gear purchases. And even thought the 70d is supposed to be a very good camera, especially for video ( we NEVER shoot video ), I feel like Canon is not really committed to the APS-C format and I'll face this issue again in 2-3 years as I watch the advances that Pentax is making. It's time to upgrade her t2i, it is well used. So invest more in Canon even though I am not excited about it, or jump ship and start the migration to the Pentax line....hmmm.

I left here a few days ago convinced that the 70d was the common sense upgrade with the investment that we already have in lenses, and I guess it still is....but I am really thinking that in the long run, she'll be better off with Pentax ( even if she doesn't know it yet). But it could go either way, I still have a few weeks before Christmas to waffle.

I might have to let her handle the other bodies, it will remove the "surprise" element, but better before than "Surprise!, I don't like this one !" later.
She already has LR5 and CS6, and shoots only RAW. In the end, the differences between the K-3 and 70d might not justify switching brands at this point....but I may let her make the call to keep me out of hot water.

Thanks Miguel, your opinion is especially valuable since you have a foot in both camps. While the 7D is really a fine sports camera, it does have the same sensor as the t2i. And outdoors it is a really decent sensor, but has the same struggles under low light. My three daughters are all swimmers and shooting indoors in most aquatic centers is akin to shooting in a cave, so shooting action in the low light with high iso has been a little disappointing. Actually most of her other shooting is indoors also.

I should have mentioned that her 70-200 2.8 is not the expensive Canon L glass, it's the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM, which is also available for Pentax so it would not be a huge sacrifice to replace it with the Pentax version.

Your other insights all make sense too and realistically I should just upgrade her to the 70D. With that said I'd really like to hear how your soccer shoot goes tomorrow and how you feel about focus tracking compared to the 7D.

Thanks,

haha, NO Christo, I would not say that to her. I will give her this, she does shoot manually only, it took a few months but I was able to get her comfortable with exposure. And the teachers, parents, and students that she shoots just love her pics..so I really should not have made a negative comment....and I'll deny it completely if it gets back to her :-)

As far as changing UI, I don't think it would mess her up too much, she is pretty tech savvy, taught computer classes...so she could learn a new UI without much fuss. I guess my struggle is, is the K-3 enough better than the 70D to justify selling gear off? And will Pentax stay ahead of Canon in the APS-C line in the future so I am not facing this problem again a few years from now if Canon gets their act together after I have invested in Pentax glass? I guess that can not really be answered today.

I know you can't chase technology as companies leap frog each other with new releases, but seriously the t2i, t3i, t4i,t5i, 7D, 60D all having the same sensor...it's like canon is just not trying. Seems they are more interested in video, which I couldn't care less about.

Thanks Terry, you are correct. Her T2i is not worth much, in addition to the lenses I mentioned, she also has the kit lenses 18-55 and 55-250, so as a bundle she might get $300, but it's not really a factor. I was really hoping for a Canon announcement this holiday season, but as you point out, it looks like they have little interest in the APS-C line

This may be the wrong place to start this conversation to get a non-biased opinion, but Christmas is coming and I am in a dilemma.

The wife shoots with a Canon T2i, she has been pretty happy with it as it was her first DSLR and she has never shot with anything better. She now shoots way more than I ever suspected she would, she is not great, but shoots a lot for the school, the swim team, choraliers....etc, etc. So, basically I want to upgrade her for Xmas.

If any of you follow the Canon line, you will know that the Rebel line is now up to the T5i with the exact same sensor as the old t2i, so basically no change in IQ. The 70D gets a new sensor, but from what I can tell it is not significantly better but does get a slight bump in low light performance.

Since she does have lenses that would need to be replaced ( 50mm f/1.8, 17-50 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 ) financially it would make more sense to upgrade to the 70D than change manufacturers, but the Pentax K-3 is really calling to me with it's low light performance, in-body stabilization, weather sealing, etc.

Is it really a fools folly to jump ship and move her to Pentax? Canon has been so slow to update the most important part of the APS-C line, the SENSOR that I am really disappointed. Anyone else dump Canon to go to Pentax?

It will not be MY camera, I still have a 5DmrkII ( but jonesing bad for the Nikon df ), Fuji X-Pro1, Fuji X100, Pentax Q, so really it will no impact me either way...other than money, but you can see from my line upthat I am a bit of a gear addict.

Anyone care to talk me off the ledge?

No such luck...she shot straight JPG. I wanted her to shoot RAW but I knew she would not have a place to download the files, so instead of sending her with a stack of SD cards to keep up with, she just had a 32gb card. In hind sight, the 1000 jpgs she shoot barely put a dent in the 32gb card so she could have easily gotten away with RAW and no need to offload files.

For social media, she also had her Nokia 820 until it was lifted somewhere in the crowd, but at least those images were backed up to Skydrive.

Thanks, it took a trip through lightroom, it was cropped top and bottom to give it that panarama perspective, and then a LR preset took care of the color shift.

My 15yo daughter just got back from a 15 day visit to Brazil with her youth group for World Youth Day. I knew she would not use one of our DSLRs, and I would not risk sending her with my X-Pro1..but I thought the Q was just small enough that she might just carry it around and get a few photos.

I coached her a bit before she left about the virtues of manual mode, and AV..and as soon as she got on the plane..she went full AUTO...oh well, what are you going to do.

The little Q with the 01 prime turned out to be a great choice, if it had been bulky or hard to use, she would not have bothered, but instead she did manage a 1000+ clicks on her trip.

Here are a few..

Lens flare accidental, but turned out cool I think.

Yeah, I am interested in getting an adapter for my EF lenses, but I'll have to spend a little more for one with built in aperture diaphragm since my newer EF lenses don't have an aperture ring on the lens.

@Interested_Oberver, correct it is the 01 prime wide open. Being used to the full frame goodness of the 5DmkII, I was also curious if I would enjoy the images this tiny sensor would produce. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised.

HI,

I am a little late to the party, I just got my Q a couple hours ago, although I have been following this forum for a couple weeks.

Normally carrying a 5Dmk II, this really a different little animal. At first I was sure I was going to need special tweezers to be able to handle it. But adding the wrist strap from an old point-n-shoot gave me a little more confidence that it wasn't going to slip through my fingers.

I only discovered the Q a few weeks ago, and after seeing a few youtube reviews and finally this forum, I just had to have one, especially at the <$300 price that you can now find them at.

I have only shoot a dozen or so frames so far since I need to charge the battery first, thought I'd introduce myself while it's charging.

Here is one of the first shoots.

This is going to be fun, I also have a couple old m42 mount lenses and an adapter that I cant wait to stick on the Q.

Regards!
