I'm not usually interested in Macro Insect photography, but I couldn't resist trying out the 100mm f/2.8 with off-camera bounce flash to try capturing this little critter in a tight space in the laundry last night.

This one was taken at sunrise of the ruins of the blue metal quarry in Bombo on the NSW South Coast. I have been using a borrowed K3 and am now looking to get my hands on one permanently! ;)

Thanks dcBear. I bought a mecablitz 52 AF-1. I find it works great on board and as a "smart" slave and does just fine with PTTL. The pic above was taken with the Metz on board set to PTTL with the K30 on AV. I was no more than 20cm from the nearest flower and at 18mm fov with the built in diffuser down the flash handled it pretty well I think.

I also have a Yongnuo 560 which I use when I want a two light setup. If I were to have just one though, I'd definitely go for the Metz, but if you need to save some money, get a cheap manual and it will work fine. It won't be wasted if you want a decent PTTL later because you can use the old one as a second slave.

I see this dead tree regularly near my home and have been waiting for the right light to compliment it. The other day I was treated to perfect golden hour as the sun burst through the clouds and presented me this show.

That's what I've found too. I was wondering if I could (or indeed should) enter a non-Pentax lens into the Exif. Perhaps the PPG doesn't really want to advertise another brand (none of which were taken with a Pentax lens :-)).

I also had another 3 approved yesterday:

From my first outing with my newly acquired (from a forum member) K-5 and also my new tripod. Used a CPL on the Sigma, 30 second exposure, f/13 at 12mm.

On a photowalk the other day with a mate through the 5 waterfalls walk in the Blue Mountains NSW. I took over 150 shots and spent around 4 hours on a 2.8km walk. I will be back for sure - next time after some heavy rains as the falls were more of a trickle. This taken with K30, Sigma 10-20mm 3.5 EX DG, 13sec @ f/18.

I own both and also believe the Sigma to be better IQ in general than the Pentax. That said, I love the Pentax and is probably the best all-purpose consumer level zoom I've used. The WR is great for peace of mind, and as for IQ, I do think the colour rendition is a little better than the Sigma - something easily fixed in PP. However it is not as sharp, not as fast and displays less contrast.

The biggest weakness of the Pentax lens is at the longer end, which of course defeats the purpose of replacing the Sigma. Rather than give you advice, I will tell you my lens plan. When I have some more funds, I intend to sell my 18-135 (and some others) to fund a 60-250 f/2.8 and keep the Sigma 17-70.

Edit: That said, some of my best images were taken with the 18-135 because it's a lot more versatile and so happened to be on at the right time. In my mind, that speaks a lot in itself.

what filter do I need

Hi Maxibaut,

I have the f/3.5 version of the same lens. I also have a Circular Polarizer (CPL) for it. Some things you need to be aware of.

1. it is a very large diameter on this lens (82mm) which make these filters expensive.
2. What's more, owing to the very wide angle you really need to get an ultra thin filter to avoid heavy vignetting - even more expensive. Even the thinnest will produce some minor vignetting.
3. npridgeon is partially correct. You can use a CPL (obviously) and it will fit but when you shoot outdoors with a clear sky, you will notice that the CPL effect will not be even across the whole sky. What you will end up with is a darker band of blue throughout the middle.

That said, I still love CPL and have one for every lens I own (4 different diameter sizes). They are indispendible for landscapes, produce beautifully saturated greens in forrest, grass and foliage, and can take the place of a 1-2 stop ND for water effects. Also, as rbefly said, the effect they produce cannot be properly replicated in post-processing. They are also great to increase the contrast in clouds and see through reflections in water but again, if the water is a large portion of your image at a wide angle, the effect will not be consistent. Not so noticeable with clouds.

I don't really use it for indoors, I don't find it very effective at dealing with bright windows as they're too location specific. I use HDR instead.

Hope this helps.
Tony.

I really love the way this lens renders for portraits - absolutely stunning. But I am getting frustrated with the "M" when trying to capture kids that NEVER STOP MOVING. I keep persisting however.

Here's one attempt from the weekend of my 7 month old boy.

I was driving to work yesterday, feeling under the weather (no pun intended). I had my camera next to me, you know, just in case. The clouds were grey and uninteresting and I really didn't feel like doing anything but getting to work. Then...

I came over the hill, the clouds broke and this confronted me. It was as if the heavens were daring me to drive on by.

This is the popular and unimaginatively named "Blue Pool", is a tidal pool on the south coast of NSW. A beautiful spot for both amateur and professionals alike and a not-to-bad place for an early morning dip. Taken at 30s, 11mm.
