Flash lag fixed / FW 1.21

No change for me. On board flash in auto has the delay. On board in manual does not. Had by daughters birthday party last week. It was a roller skating party so was quite dark, so needed flash to capture action. A lot of shots were missed because by the time the shot fired, the child had moved closer or further away and so shot was too bright or dark. Really disappointed. Should have taken my E-M10 instead. Smaller sensor and great glass, but flash is always spot on, and quick.

Just updated to 1.10 - still a minor delay, probably half as before, but still takes a fraction longer to shoot with flash vs without.

Thanks for the response.

I went into every retailer I could find in KLCC, Low Yat, Pavillion and Berjaya Times Square. Didn't get out of KL itself so can't speak for other stores. None of the places I went into had Pentax gear on display (that I could find), except for some that had a couple of cameras on show. I expect that if I had asked to order lenses they would have got them in specifically for me. Didn't have a lot of time to research before going but was just surprised at the lack of obvious promotion in the sites I did visit.

Cheers.

I feel like an outcast.

My family and I had a long-awaited holiday planned involving 7 days in Ho Chi Minh City & 4 in Kuala Lumpur. I was excited about the chance to find some retailers who would carry a variety on lenses to try, and possible buy, especially in KL.

I took my trusty K-5 and DA* 16-50. Also took my Sigma 70-200 2.8 but didn't expect to use it a lot due to its weight.

Can't count the number of retailers I visited in an attempt find some Pentax gear to try. Found nothing, except a used 50-135 in HCMC, which despite being tempted, was not brave enough to consider seriously. This is one of the lenses in my current wish list.

All retailers had the predictable Canikon selections, and most had a selection from either Fujifilm, Panasonic & Sony. Nothing from Pentax. Nothing. Even from some of the larger retailers in KL. This has strengthened my consideration to switch to another brand. It is bad enough that I am unable to try gear out before I buy in Adelaide. I was surprised that I found myself in the same position in KL & HCMC.

I tested a 70D, and was close to pulling the trigger, until I heard the shutter - hardly a discrete sound. Also looked at D7100 but I love the way the Pentax sits in my hands.

The K-5 and 16-50 performed perfectly, as expected. Interestingly when we were in the hotel elevator on our way to check out, a fellow joined us carrying a K-5 with kit 18-55. I don't know which of us was more surprised that we had actually seen someone else with a Pentax. We are not completely alone, but damn close to it....

Cheers,
Darren.

K3 or DA* 50-135

Thanks for the reply. IQ is important to me. I hadn't thought about the TC option and have never used one - not sure if there is a learning curve? Perhaps the 50-135 + 1.5 TC might be an option. Thanks again.

Thanks for the quick response. Your solution is simple, and I think we often over-complicate this photography thing!!!
So the 18-135 is good?

K3 or DA* 50-135

Hi all,

I'm taking the family to Vietnam and Malaysia for 3 weeks over Christmas and into the new year and am considering a long overdue upgrade.:)

My kit is outlined below and my question is really targeted at someone who has moved from K5 to K3.

I expect there will be a lot of walking, buses, trains, etc and am considering either the K3 or DA* 50-135. In the long term would like both but the Treasurer is not playing the game I'd like right now. I can comfortably walk around all day with the 16-50 attached and rarely use a neck strap. With the 70-200 attached, fatigue does become an issue but I really like the image quality from the K5/Sigma combo.

My options are:

1) Replace K5 with K3 for better video control and increased resolution. I don't do as much video as I would like with the K3 partly because it is not flexible enough. Would also mean I could put my non-WR 18-55 or DA35 on the K5 for my wife/daughter to use.
2) Replace non-WR Sigma 70-200 with DA* 50-135. As well as having WR, it would seem from reviews that I will not be going backwards in terms of image quality from the Sigma to the Pentax. I would lose the reach, but I won't really know until I hit the ground if that will be a real issue. I will probably take the 70-200 and leave it in the apartment unless I get stuck and think I will need it.
3) I guess a 3rd option might be to simply get a couple of primes - perhaps a 70 or 77, and take a chance on not needing the extra reach.

I'm not a huge fan of using flash so ISO is important - this may be due to the questionable flash performance of the K5/AF-540 combo. This seems to be much improved in the K3?? I have read mixed reviews regarding which of the K3 or K5 has better ISO performance.

Any and all comments or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Darren.

No lens identifier in EXIF data

Thanks all.
Looks like manual selection of lens in Lens Corrections might be the way to go. Or get myself a 50-135 or 60-250!!!
Cheers,
Darren.

No lens identifier in EXIF data

Hi all,

Apologies if this has already been asked. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer. I shoot with k-5 and use Lightroom 4 to process & archive my shots. My query relates to missing lens names in exif data.

When I use a pentax lens (16-50, 35, 50), the lens name shows in the exif data within LR. When I use the sigma 17-70 or 70-200, the lens is not identified, meaning I'm not entirely sure which lens to select when using lens corrections.

When using LR lens corrections, the Pentax lenses are selected automatically as the lens name is captured within the exif data. I need to manually select either of the sigma lenses using the drop down boxes in lens corrections. This is more than a bit of a pain rather than a real problem.

Is this a common issue? Is there a workaround so that the lens name is included in the shot specs when loaded into LR?

Thanks in advance.
Darren.

Hi all,

I've spent a lot of time reading through the forums & thought it time to sign up, and possibly contribute at some point!!

I started with a Konica Minolta 5D, then a K-7 and now have a K-5. I'm waiting in anticipation for the next high-end DSLR from Pentax and I'm not fussed one way or another if it is FF or not - what ever comes will exceed my ability. FF would be nice though - something to grow into.

I enjoy photographing all sorts, but particularly architecture, animals and portraits. Also enjoy letting my 10y.o. daughter play with the K-5 and from time-to-time put me to shame.

I look forward to improving my Lightroom skills!! Also looking forward to continuing to spread the word about the merits of the Pentax product.

Cheers,
Darren.
