645d for enthusiast?

Hi Alex!

No experience with Canon digital gear, and still new to the 645D, so I cannot really address your first three questions. As a hobbyist returning to Pentax (again), I have an opinion on the fourth.

Why not? As mentioned above, enthusiasts/ hobbyists and the like spend similar money on full-frame/ flagship bodies/ top-notch glass. No reason why you should be excluded from using a 645D if you can afford to do so.

I don't know about you, but in my case the joy of photography extends to the gear. For me, photography isn't just about the image - it's also about enjoying a hobby that has proven to be a major source of relaxation and stress relief, and part of that enjoyment comes from using gear that I find fun during use. The 645D ticks that box. There are some other reasons I went 645D instead of something like a D810, but the enjoyment factor is my most prominent reason for gear choices these days.

I recently took advantage of the Adorama close-out deal and picked up the 645D + 55/2.8 kit. Still thinking about lenses for later down the road. Like you, my primary use for the kit will be landscape, so I'll be following this thread to read members' responses to your first three questions.

Enjoy!

Visual way to track/manage my personal lens collection?

Because I'm a bit OCD, I was hoping to come up with some way to keep an inventory of my lenses in a way that goes beyond just my simple Excel spreadsheet. Ideally, I'd like something visual like the official Ricoh/Pentax Lens Roadmap, which shows focal lengths and the lenses on a chart.

Does anyone have a template or something that they'd be willing to share? I'm not very good at computer graphics.

Thank you!!

645 lenses on Sony full frame E mount adapter

Since I am using also Canon EOS camera and lenses, as well as Sony A mount camera such as A99, A77II, plus Sony A7r and A6000, so when I bring Pentax 645Z with lenses for travelling, I use A7r and A6000 system as back up, because Pentax 645 does not have very wide lenses, so I normally carry the Canon 14mm f2.8 and the 8-15mm fisheye lenses to use on A7r with adapter ( can do AF-S), so I also carry a P645 to EOS adaptor, so just in case, I can use the P645 lenses on my A7r as well as A6000 ( for fast frame rate per sec). So what I have are a two-step adapters, P645 to EOS, then EOS to E (FE) mount. Also I have P645 to MA ( Sony A mount) adapters, as well as the Sony A mount to E mount adapter by Sony which again is a two-step adapters from P645 to Sony E mount. Both works fine for me, and it seems more flexible in these ways.

Pentax, no more big lenses, please.

Ok, now that I have your attention, let me preface this with the fact that I already own a bunch of "big" lenses for my Nikon D800. I don't need to replicate this. What I need is a smaller camera kit for travel with filter size no bigger than 67mm. That is the primary reason why I purchased my Pentax K-3 + DA*60-250mm. The DA* 60-250mm meets this requirement (especially if you compare how lightweight it is vis a vis Nikon 80-400mm or Canon 100-400mm behemoths). So far so good. What else is out there in Pentax land? Well all the Limited lenses meet this requirement too. Check. I have a nice set of limiteds as well (although they aren't WR which is such a shame). Then there is the older 16-45mm with a 67mm (again not WR). Ok, I have that too and it has proved to be a good little performer. But that's it. Everyone else in lens manufacturing land is making behemoths (prime examples: Leitz Otus and Sigma Art, but even Pentax can be faulted e.g. 16-50mm f/2.8 w/77mm filters). Fuji seems to be on the ball however: I'm liking their 56mm f/1.2 (62mm filter) and I hope Pentax follows suit. Let the Sigmas and Tamrons make the behemoth lenses while you extend your 67mm-and-under weather-resistant lens line. Please.

Michael
