Hi UncleVanya, no, did not think of putting a variable aperture option. I use the lens for its bokeh, if I would stop it down this effect is reduced, and I would rather use a more modern lens

Hi, I got this lens on Ebay. It was somewhat foggy so I disassembled it and cleaned it.
I post the images I took here, without any instructions. There are no moving parts apart the screw mechanism for focusing, so if you open it to do some maintenance it should be straightforward to put it together again: you just have to keep note of the from/back orientation of each element.

A short review is available here:

I am not able to edit the original post, I cannot find any "edit" button, so I'll leave it as it is for the moment.

C5 does not exist.

If you mean Camera5->ButtonCustomization->E-Dial Programming I have

P: Tv (front) Av (Back) ->P (green button)
as per default. Icould change it to:
P: AE (front) P-Shift (Back) P LINE (green button)
but then I would lose combined Tv & Av addressability, and in any case the AE button would still be useless.

I'm not looking for a way to configure AE, as I already have enough options for it.
I'm looking a way to correctly use the AE button to change AE settings, instead of having it focus!

No custom buttons customizable to AE, but yes:
-> third dial cam be set to AE. I like to have it at ISO, and AE is next to it, easy reachable
-> second option is change focus to MF, AE+back-wheel works correctly, change back to AF

Thanks to all

It happens with every lens, when I'm in AF mode. I just bought it... second hand, from a private seller.
It's no big deal, I was thinking that maybe I cannot correctly use it, but most probably it's a defect, given the inputs from you all.

Re-flashed latest firmware, still issue remains.

i_trax: I did user reset AND then wrench/4/reset+battery out.

biz-engineer: yes, indeed, or go MF/correct compensation/AF. It's as if AE button has limited functionality. MAy be that the FW flash had a minor twitch? Sending for repair is above my possibilities now that I just bought the K1. If I got som spare money maybe...
...maybe I'll go for a MF lens, like my last Cyklop 85mm/1.5, or something else funny rather than pay for a button behavior change :-)

It's not some grit:
When I set the focus to MF then the +/- button works as expected: I keep it pressed, turn the back wheel and AE changes as it should be.

I switched objectives and the behavior is not changing.
Any other ideas before going to factory setting?

Ok, with your setting I can do it.
...but then I do not have acess to both time & aperture in P mode which is not how P-mode is supposed to work.

...and more importantly: why do I need a +/- AE compenastion button then if I cannot use it to change AE compensation?
Please anybody tell me how to use it.

P.S.: in case nobody can help I'll go back to factory setting and see how it behaves then, but before doing this I want to understand what'S happening

Hi, I have tried various modi and in each one the +/- button is focusing. Then in the viewer I get the hexagon indicator of "focused".
I get focusing by pressing +/-, not by turning the wheel
While I keep the +/- button pressed the back display shuts off.

---------- Post added 06-28-21 at 12:21 PM ----------

...I have tried with AE lock on and off, always same result.

Hi all,
How am I supposed to use the +/- expo compensation button? According to the manual (page 50) when I press it I can use the back wheel to change the expo compensation.
What I get instead is a lens focusing, same as when I press the AF button, or half-press the release shutter.

...but if I select manual focus on the AF/MF lever then I'm able to set the expo compensation by acting on +/- and turning the back wheel.

Where is my error? Did I manage to change some other configuration entry in the menues?

Thanks,Leonardo

I have a Pentax K1, FW 1.54.

Image stabilization on zooms: F, A, FA, ...

I shoot with old zoom lenses in the past, and that's what I did too: enter a middle value between min and max zoom focal lengths.

But I am going to buy a generic zoom which I will use in darker situations, and would like it to have the IS working correctly at any zoom.
I already own a Sigma 17-70 2.8/4.0, which communicates its focal length stepwise to the camera, and the camera IS works accordingly.
Is anything similar possible on older zooms? Does a FA type zoom, for example, tell the camera its actual focal length (not the range)? And a F, an A, an M zoom?
This is what I would like to know before deciding which zoom to buy.

Image stabilization on zooms: F, A, FA, ...

Hi, two quick questions, which I could not find completely answered.

On which zooms the IBIS is working correctly?

I expect that a correct communication of the focal length should happen between camera and lens, so probably only at least FA type lenses? Or maybe not all of them? What about third-party lenses?

Second point: optical image stabilization is said to give me 4 to 5.5 steps of gain in exposition time, depending on the camera model.
But on zooms the focal length is communicated to the camera in steps, and even primes may have a mismatch of also 5% in the reported Vs actual focal lenght. This in turn affects the IBIS accuracy. IS anybody aware of any measurement of this effect?

Thanks, Leo

Unit-impulse response.

A sudden change in the coordinate of the point to be focused tells me how long the face/eye recognition SW takes to recognize the new subject position and lock the focus.

The inverse of the time to refocus is the maximum burst rate in case of an erratically moving subject.

If we want to have the worst-case burst rate we should also move the subject distance to the camera: we'll get an additional focus time (and lower burst rate), which is however strongly dependent on the objective implementation (size, motor, f number, focal) and is outside the scope of the test in the video

They still update the FW of my yellow K-01! Nice!
There was a time when I appreciated it, for the focus-peaking in dark conditions and f1.4 lenses.
But then I got my hands on the K-70. Now nobody wants the 01. Even my children prefer the OVF. 100% infected.

Subtitles lag for too many seconds, and then I cannot make sense of what follows, but they mention also a following firmware update.
Anybody who understands Japanese can get anything out of that?

It seems they are advertising this as a FF equivalent, in terms of usage, feel (OVF) and image quality.

Yes, a full cm. No more room for improvement in the future, maybe 0.5cm max.

Also, what I find as something that stands out: the pentaprism & OVF make up a higher and higher percentage of the camera cross-section.

Probably the increased OVF magnification contributed to this, beside the thinning of the camera body.

This tells me that reducing the flange-to-sensor distance will have a reduced return in terms of camera size.

--> We are at a forking point between mirrorless APS or FF cameras and DSLR.
--> We can reasonably expect the flange-to-sensor distance to be kept constant (no new mount), with maintained backward lens compatibility for the future models.

A down mirror during shooting is indeed more prone to generate dust spots in the images taken, given the fact that it is not protected from dust as the sensor (which is covered by the shutter and by the mirror itself, and nevertheless gets dust particles), and is not equipped with dust removal.

It's a nice idea, but I do not see it working on a camera with exchangeable objectives.

The smartphone is probably already in your pocket, time to grab a camera and the suject is not there anymore, 99% of the times

There are shortcuts. I power up the smartphone camera by double pressing the power button, when the smartphone is sleeping, without even looking fdor where the camera app is in the display. Some custom ROMS and some apps allow you to define such behaviors.

But a DSLR takes much better photos, I can choose the lens I wish and I get more satisfaction by taking shots. Those are the reasons I use a camera instead of a smartphone, not the speed of execution or the availability.
