It was summer afternoon near Girevi village in Tusheti - one of the most remote and highest regions in Georgia (country, not state). The landscape itself was variable but then sun and clouds started their shadow play on the valley slopes - that was one of the most beautiful landscapes I've photographed.
These valleys are unreachable in winter - snow buries everything - and in September or October people with their stock leave mountains and go to lower area villages in south.

Great capture of the "cracked earth". This shot does illustrate the effects of drought very well, and is a scene that is repeated in many areas. I'd say the comments made about the trees are irrelevant.

I like it, too. The background is clear enough to continue the story in the foreground, which is the subject. Well done!

I think this is an outstanding image that is very well composed. I don't get why some people would have said the trees are irrelevant. They are as relevant as the dried mud in creating the story that this photo tells of drought and its effects. I also like the shallow depth of field with the trees and sky blurred out in the background. Well done!

Because my first interest is bird photography, it has to be The Monster - the Pentax D FA HD 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW. In a pinch, at the right distance, it will also do well-detailed captures of flowers, butterflies and other larger insects. I just wish I had an anti-gravity formula for it!!!!

The formal clubs I have been associated with were very competitive not only with images but more so with having the latest and greatest gear. Most of the members thought a little too much of themselves to my liking.

We have a mentoring scheme although there isn't much uptake at present, we are also going to be previewing competition images for those who haven't benn judged (and found wanting :) ) I think a lot is down to the individual. Some people love to guide and support and some don't. I think there is room in a club for both. Guess which camp I am in :) ---------- Post added 22-06-21 at 10:24 AM ----------
I think the worst judges are the inconsistent ones.
Pic a marked down because of one feature, pic x has the same issues but scores high
Or
An image riddled with sensor spots gets 18/20
Or
The judge doesn't understand it so low score regardless of the quality
Or
A blatant copy of a fairly famous image gets best photo (we think it was because it was near the judges house)
Or
A street photo gets slammed because there are cigarette butts next to the bin
Or
Or
Or
Some judges are great but you have to take it with a pinch of salt. That's why I enter unconventional images, purely for fun :)

It was only when I noticed your profile showed you're in Melbourne that I realised you weren't talking about my club , as the grade progression, shot of the month, committee issues, cliquiness, even membership numbers etc all sound so familiar.
In the last couple of years my club has tried to address some of the issues you've mentioned, and I think there have been improvements but I think there's still room for improvement.
There's been an increased emphasis on helping beginners which is good to bring in fresh blood, however I think maybe it has been at the expense of offering something for more experienced photographers, as I think that risks people learning how to use their cameras and take good photographs, then leave the club if too many activities are geared around learning the basics.
I think I've reached the point where I'm actually fairly comfortable that I can produce a decent image if I put the effort in, so I don't really have anything to prove taking on subjects completely out of my area of interest, and in fact they're distracting from the kind of photography I really want to do.
My club does have an open category every month, but it counts for less than set topics, but perhaps I should focus on that as then I can do whatever photography I like.
I think the real challenge with a camera club is to make it valuable to all types of photographers; beginners, experienced, competitive, non-competitive, professional, amateur (my club had an issue one year when someone came up with the bright idea of selling members' images to raise funds for charity - without getting permission from the photographers first - huge red copyright infringement flag, and fortunately it didn't happen.)

Social clubs based around a common interest should have a foundation of mutual support, the best do. That foundation allows for both trust and a spirit of friendly competition for those that want the challenge.
A good club will encourage members to learn from and to teach each each other.

Various kind of clubs. Pros & cons. Some clubs follow a peculiar school of photography, matching your style/taste or not. Other clubs are multipurpose, more open. It's nice to meet other photographers for spontaneous or thematic photo outings. If they point out at my Pentax gear (like a black sheep), then it's probably not the kind of people I'm looking for. A few years ago, in my area, if you didn't have a Canon or Nikon, you'd be finger pointed at, but now with mirrorless those people are having a bit of an identity crisis.

I've been a member of my camera club for 40 years or so and I really enjoy it. We meet twice a month with one meeting being a program and the other meeting being competition. We alternate competitions each month between prints/slides and digital images. I have no issue with the competitions, but the key is in not taking them too seriously. It's just someone's opinion and all this stuff is subjective. Even though the whole club takes field trips several times during the year, there are also smaller groups of folks who met through the club who like to go out and shoot together. We've got a wide range of experience levels in the club...as well as a variety of photographic interests. Some guys shoot portraits, others shoot sporting events, still others like nature or birds in flight, and others love creating works through combining images. We try to make room for everyone. What's kept me coming back all these years is very much what has kept me coming to this site...a shared interest in photography. Some folks in the club are really into the gear, but overall most of the folks in our club are more concerned with the final image. Nobody thinks I'm strange for sticking with Pentax all these years and in fact, it's gotten me some sweet deals on lenses and cameras. Sometimes one of the members will come across a bargain on a piece of Pentax gear somewhere and they'll call me to see if I'm interested since I'm about the only Pentax user in the club. :)

The best camera/photography club that I have ever been a member of, by far, is right here at PF! No obligations; competitions, with seemingly endless variety, to enter or just observe. Members from all over the world, the vast majority of whom keep it friendly and welcoming. The wealth of knowledge, and willingness to share it, astound me almost every time I check in! The consistency of receiving multiple, helpful replies to questions asked, be they "newbie" or from those who've been working pro's for 50 years or more, is something I am very proud to be a part of. This site is truly "photography's best kept secret" online.
Bravo Pentax Forums and every member who pitches in to keep it the best photography club in the world!!

We have, or had anyway, a couple of camera clubs here. I never really got into either one. One of them was very competitive, and I found there was substantial brand snootiness, which was also part of the competition, it seemed. The other tried very much to be about photography, but I ended up giving more free seminars than being a regular member.
Concurrently to that, there was a group of about half a dozen of us that regularly went shooting, the group size varied greatly, but it was always about the photography, food and beer. That was my kind of group. Unfortunately, death and people moving away took it's toll, and the group sort of petered out through attrition.
Now I am a simple internet troll on Pentax Forums.

since moving here last fall.:) I believe this is a female Ruby Throated Hummingbird which are in this area in the summer. They have been feeding on the salvia in my front yard, and today I was waiting for them. This was taken from about 7-8 feet away and cropped just a little.
