Those of you who has played with the original K-x color simulator may have noticed that this was built with the sad flash technology. Resource hogging, crashy and proprietary Adobe.
Needless to say, it did not work on iOS and the iPad. Pentax did notice, and for the K-r it has chosen a better way that actually works! NB, the iPad (and the iPhone) are quite popular in Japan too. DCWatch is an invaluable resource for news and details of all things Pentax. Although in Japanese, you can usually gleen a lot from the excellent photos and by using a translation service also learn some interesting things.
The page that presents the K-r and the new Optios is no exception. The gold colored K-r is beautiful! The miniature K-x that is installed in the flash shoe is cute but propbably useless. The Optio RS1000 can be decorated with your own work or professional stuff, for example from the guys behind the robotic K-x (korejanairobo). I guess we will see many cool skins from the fantastic Japanese world of manga and anime for this compact. The Optio NB1000 is even weirder with its [LEGO rip-off] nanoblock surface. Cool but useful? Playing with the blocks may be fun but why on a camera?
Of more interest are some facts about the K-x. It sounds as if the design and the color options was significant for the growing group of young people getting a DSLR for the first time. I think they say that the K-x became the best selling DSLR for Pentax, maybe as a result of the popular color choices.
The "pyramid" image is significant. Where do you see the place for a FF DSLR here? I certainly don't.
The colored versions of the DA35mmF2.4AL should become available in November.
And the color simulator? Yes, it works well on my iPhone and iPad, and loads much faster than the flash version.

Pentax held a brief in Tokyo on the 9th, before the sales started today.
This article on DCWatch goes into the history behind the 645D launch - http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20100610_373415.html
One of the reasons for the delay was that they wanted to get the K-7 out of the door before finalizing the 645D.
Among other things they mention that Pentax tried a CMOS sensor with live view but decided that the better image quality offered by the CCD was more important than offering a live view.
It seems as if the sensor assembly can accept a low-pass filter that might be included if there is a demand. It would be rather expensive though, that's why it is not there now, if I understand them correctly. Hopefully, this makes more sense to you…
They offer several reasons for adopting the SDHC card and not the SDXC. The two slots can be used in several different ways, one RAW and the other JPEG, or one used as a backup for the other, just to mention a few.
The shutter should last 50,000 exposures, these are actually counted in the camera.
Costs were controlled by sharing about 10% of the components with the K-7, for example PRIME-II and the battery. This should give between 650 and 800 exposures, depending on the temperature.
The lens road map was not revealed in detail but the super-wide-angle lens shown earlier should come.
They don't target the professional or the overseas customer now. The order situation is said to be extremely good. Overseas deployment is depending on the establishment of after-sales service.

It certainly looks as if the K-x will be very popular and a great seller for Pentax. :D
Although the many cool colors are only available in Japan, they are bound to be noticed in the press everywhere. We can get the K-x in blue, white and red here, and even that is much more than the DSLR competition can offer. Way to go, Pentax!

You can contact Masamichisan at the CrescentShop - Shopping from Japan - Crescent Trading
I have used his services on several occasions, highly recommended.
Whether that hot pink K-x is worth the extra outlay is up to you - or your spouse ;-)

You can actually order it yourself through a shopping agent. Pick your favorite color in the Pentax site and give your order to the Crescent Shop Shopping from Japan - Crescent Trading
I have used this on several occasions and Masamichisan is always very helpful. You will pay a fee and the shipping from Japan, of course, but then you have a unique camera!

According to German foto magazine, the K-m sensor dust removal is next to useless.
Hopefully, its replacement will have the same mechanism as the K-7 which is great.

Now in Sweden too! Scandinavian Photo managed to ship my camera yesterday. Got it, now charging ;-)
First issue: The Swedish manual says that the charger indicator light is red during charging, and the goes off when the battery is fully charged. My charger features a green light, however.
The English manual says: The indicator lamp is lit during charging. The indicator lamp turns off when the battery is fully charged.

Media Markt in Sweden mentions July 1st as the launch date here in a full page advert in Kamera & Bild magazine. On the back cover Pentax has another full page advert.
Even UK MacUser magazine has a full page K-7 news flash, obviously much of the press has got the message!

It looks like the official launch date here in Sweden is July 1st so I guess it will be similar elsewhere.

Don't know if anyone has commented on this yet but the large and detailed (and official) image makes it possible to calculate an approximate size of the newK.
Both the K-mount and the flash shoe can be used as a reference, giving a width of 125 mm or less exactly the same as my nimble istDS!
The newK is likely to be higher and deeper though, but will hopefully still dwarf the bulky and heavy K10D.

From Feb 2 2009 Pentax increased the prices of FA and A lenses by 20 percent. That included priceless objects such as the 31mm and 77mm Limiteds.
Perhaps this answers some of your concerns?

Great news, thanks for letting us know!
So the camo version is not a bad idea at all IMHO.
I think they even might get away with a Hello Kitty model, at least in Japan

Money, money, money. Oh well, isn't this the time to get that fabulous limited lens before it is gone. The 31mm LE is a behemoth but it takes so nice pictures. You really should have one, you know. In black, of course. |
