Curious, which software did you use to process your pixel shift shot?

Sticky: Tutorial/Repair Pentax K-70 with aperture-problem: Exchange solenoid

The most difficult part for me was soldering the pink and the lilac wires to the solenoid, there wasn't much slack and I was worried burning the plastic coating. Fortunately my hands were steady, I'm not a drinker (anymore) and I also waited until long after I drank my coffee!

I got the white solenoid out of my K10d last week, it was as easy as pie. In the interim I did some practice soldering (just on wires I had laying around), then I took the battery out of my K70 3 days ago. I finally got to following your instructions this afternoon. Took me a while, the K70 was much harder to open than the K10d was. I was able to remove the green solenoid and replace it with the white. Soldering was tough, but I tested the wires by pulling on them with my tweezers. Took a couple of tries to get the MF/AF thingamabob to line up. The camera's all put back together again and no underexposed frame with optical, and no overexposed frame with live view. Thank you Photogem!

Non-K70 related, but Pentax related. I pulled out my K50 and used it over the last week (I bought it in 2014, shot probably 40-50,000 exposures, no aperture problem...so far!) I realized that 2 lenses I bought and only used on my K70 (a 20-40 limited and a 15 limited) both required beyond -10 AF correction. When using live view I get perfect AF, but those two lenses are off the scale when I try to do corrections on them. I'm going to have to see how some of my other lenses are, maybe I just never noticed the camera is off.
Still, happy to have my K70 working again!

Thank you @YeOldePentaxian! I just got an iMac Retina (late 2015). I actually had the original CD but no CD reader so this helped me enormously! I don't use DCU too often, mainly for Pixel Shift stuff that Lightroom doesn't seem to handle well.

Question: One thing I didn't think of. Will the solenoid from K10d work on the K70?

I'm curious how opening up the camera impacts it's weather sealing? I've always been careful even with the weathersealing. Obviously repaired camera with compromised weather sealing is better than a fully weather sealed camera that's not totally functional. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with that. Common sense tells me once I've opened the camera I'd need to be extra cautious about moisture going forward.

Thanks. I'm going to need to get a soldering iron with a fine tip first. I think our local Home Depot is considered an essential business. And it's right next door to our supermarket, where we're going to have to go some time this week.

Thanks for the clear instructions! I bought a new K70 in November 2017 and have been seeing signs of the aperture problem. So far it only seems to happen when the camera has bee turned off, the first exposure after I turn on the camera is either way underexposed if I'm using the optical viewfinder, or way overexposed if I'm using live view. After the first exposure it seems to be fine. I'm going to wait until the problem gets worse before I attempt this. I own both a K-10 with a damaged sensor, I can get the white solenoid from there.
Of course I bought this camera because I owned a K50 and wanted a backup (actually the K50 became the backup, and so far doesn't seem to have the aperture problem.) Kind of ironic that I was worried about my K50 getting the problem, and the K70 ends up with the problem.

Use of AWB (Automatic White Balance)

To be honest I've never tried CTE, and don't quite understand it (Color Temperature Enhancement). I'm going to have to give it a try some time. Since I shoot RAW, I don't see how it can hurt.

Use of AWB (Automatic White Balance)

I mostly use AWB for most of my shooting. I shoot RAW and rarely have a problem getting the white balance how I want it in post. One exception for me: when I'm shooting live music in a club and there are incandescent lights. I generally switch over to incandescent, or something in that temperature range. Main reason is much of the time AWB makes the preview almost impossible to see and check focus, usually due to the very blue cast.

One K-Mount PRIME to rule them all 2019

The one I tend to take with me more than any other lens would be my 21 f3.2 Limited. I own the older "green" one rather than the newer HD "red" one, On APS-C either one would be my choice for best all round lens.
If I owned a full frame, I'd definitely say the 31 Limited would be it. I don't own full frame, nor the 31.

Image Sync updated

Thanks for pointing it out, I hadn't even noticed it! Yes, it seems to work fine on my K70, no crashing when I click on the images (haven't tried downloading yet).
I never even got to put Image Sync through it's paces on the last version because I noticed the crashing immediately.
One thing I'm a little disappointed about is the fact that when viewing the live image on my Android screen I'm not able to zoom in to fine tune focus. Still, the fact that it actually works means I can use the Image Sync app in my own workflow out in the field. I can develop some images and save as JPG on the camera, download to my phone, and post to social media.

K-70 Drive Mode Button

I had the exact same problem when I first got my K70. I used a K-7 from 2009 to 2015, and then the K50 from 2015 through last November (I still use the K50, not so much the K-7).
With the K70, my palm would hit the 4 way controller and I'd find myself with a different drive mode, it seemed to happen 20 times a day. It was pretty annoying, but to be honest the more I used the camera the less it happened, as I got used to not resting my palm there, to the point that I hardly even notice it now. Only every once in a while now I'll start shooting and find I'm in burst mode. And as a back button focus guy, I also had lots of problems with the location of the AF/AE button, but after time I got used to that too (and now my thumb naturally goes from the thumbrest to the button, just as if I'd been using it all my life.)

EX Condition Pentax 100mm F/3.5 SMC FA Macro for $119 on KEH

Just thought I'd pass this along...

I was on KEH looking for an ultrawide, but I spotted this which looks to be a pretty sweet price:
Pentax 100mm F/3.5 SMC FA Macro K Mount Autofocus Lens {49} at KEH Camera Store

Didn't find what I was looking for, but if I was in the market for a very sharp macro I would snap this up in a heartbeat. Maybe somebody here might be interested!

Help. Ricoh Image Sync App

Thank you, my Image Sync was disconnecting every time I connected my HTC Android 7.0 phone to my K70. My network didn't have a "Smart Network Switching" listed by name, it had under "Advanced Wi-Fi" a listing for "Wi-Fi Internet detection" which automatically turns off Wi-Fi if it's internet connection is not working (as on my Pentax, Bingo!!!!) From the description you posted it sounds like that is pretty much the same as Smart Network Switching. Anyway, it looks as if my Image Sync works fine now.

Alternative eyepiece for K-50 viewfinder?

FWIW, I've owned a number of Pentax cameras. I haven't used my failing K-7 since I bought a K-50. Your post reminded me that I always kept the eyepiece blind from the K-7 in my camera bag. I just pulled it out and it seems to fit my K-50 just fine. Hopefully this means the eyepiece Oricman referred to should fit your K-50.

Before I saw this post, I never thought of trying it, but does Pentax support OTG storage on Android? I don't have an OTG cable to test it out with, but I can see how that might come in handy.

Thanks for your reply, Auzzie-Phoenix. I get exactly what you are saying. And at $294 it wouldn't take much to get my money's worth. The output that I've seen seems to beat my K-7 so I'm wondering if the K-7 might end up being my backup instead of the other way around ;-)

Didn't mean to hijack your thread, it just seemed like there was a lot of good info here and it might be a good place to ask (rather than start a new thread). I am still leaning towards dropping the cash to pick up a K-50 (right now I'm looking at which after market batteries are best...Wasabi or Pearstone. I know the K-30 and K-50 batteries are much smaller than the K-7's).

I was thinking about picking up a K-50 to supplement my aging K-7. I'm wondering what percentage of the K-50 ends up with the aperture block failure?
Decisions, decisions! I wonder if this is a case of not if, but when the aperture block fails or if it's just a certain batch that have the problem? I'd be pretty upset with Pentax if every single K-50 (and K-30 from what I understand) has this faulty aperture block.
I do have a few K mount lenses with aperture rings, but still...that would really stink if the failure happened right after the warranty expired!

How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

Sorry, I was off line for a couple of days. I did the same thing as Nixite and Aegon, I changed C0 to 80 in column headered with a 3. My screw focus seems to work fine at all focal lengths. Thanks to all for the help.

Here is my updated LENSEEP.LNS (just remove the .TXT from the end.) This worked fine with my K-7 with firmware 1.11 and my 50-135 SDM (not not SDM) lens!

Thanks Salagubang.
My changes look exactly the same, except for the last 3 sections (00400 to 07F0), any reason you know of everything is "FF" there? They are very different from my LENSEEP.LNS.

I've uploaded my original LENSEEP.LNS as LENSEEP-BK.TXT and the changed as LENSEEP-NEW.TXT, if anyone wants to take a look and see if something's amiss?

Thanks Salagubang, I understand (and have followed) the instructions to a tee. C0 values in column 03 are to be changed to 80 using Notepad++, and the resulting LENSEEP.LNS written back to the lens. My experience is that this did not work, and since I have a 50-135, NOT a 16-50 I was asking if different values needed to be changed.

I will go back and try the procedure again, but I have a feeling there are different values that need to be changed for the 16-135..
